A Strong Title From a Well-Informed Author

Bob Kennedy has some real background experience on this topic as he has been a part of the bodybuilding scene for decades. This book is the first title I have bought that has been authored by Bob Kennedy, who clearly demonstrated to me that he is competent in the area of bodybuilding nutrition.
Perhaps most appealing, for me, was the simple recipes available to the layperson who doesn't want to spend a lot of time hunting around health food stores for the best foods. Also, straight forward nutrition concepts are tossed around that gave me more confidence in picking good food choices. An encore for Bob Kennedy's Rock Hard!

This book is a must for anyone from beginer to expert. All you ever wanted to know about bodybuildning nutrition from bulking up to cutting down. The recipies are simple and use everyday ingredients you don't need a charge card at Mrs. Gooches to afford. The one-dish main meals are a heaven send as are the protein shake recipies. If you find this book, buy it!!!

Out of date. Out of date. Out of date. This book was published in 1987 with no updates. Whey, as the primary protein supplement didnt even exist at the time. Half the book is recipes. If thats what your looking for then by all means purchase it. If your looking for a diet strategy based current knowledge then look elsewhere.

A glimpse inside the sausage factory....

THE BLUE DAHLIA offers a rare early glimpse into the sausage-making machinery of 1940s Hollywood.

First and foremost, it's a cracking good read. A Chandler original, it's the only one of the scripts that wasn't adapted from another source or that he never adapted into prose (unlike PLAYBACK, which also exists as a novel) -- so this is the only place you can read this story, rather than watch it. If for no other reason, it's fascinating to read to see how the legendary writer's brusque, bruised prose style translates into screenplay form.

A compelling whodunnit, virtually free of the usual private eye tropes, its central character is a returning World War II vet who's accused of a murder he didn't commit. A complex slippery slide of betrayal draws him into the seedy underbelly of 1940s Los Angeles as he tries to exact justice and clear his name. We might turn to Chandler for a sense of nostalgia of times gone by -- but his stuff always cuts back with moments that feel bracingly modern. The script has beats that are surprisingly dark, gruesomely violent. He keeps trying to sneak in moments of a rawer reality than 1940s Hollywood would normally allow.

The script itself is a strange read. The editor has chosen to present a late draft, warts and all. It's laced with apparently incomplete script revisions -- the infamous green, pink, goldenrod, etc. pages that turn production scripts into rainbow colored messes. Thus, characters' names change, chunks of dialogue -- and sometimes whole scenes -- repeat; and the clumsy jointures of late scenes are a bit too obvious. (Chandler notoriously was forced by government edict to change the identity of the killer late in the game; before your eyes, a slowly building subplot takes an almost comically surreal left turn to clear the suspect and point the finger at another player.)

The script is given context by an introductory memoir by producer John Houseman (Orson Welles' former partner in crime at the Mercury Theater and on the set of CITIZEN KANE). It's a remarkable piece, telling a troubling anecdote about how Chandler finished the draft against a looming deadline. (Chandler was churning out pages even as they were finishing shooting; the studio was racing against time to finish the picture before star Alan Ladd got sent back to the Army.) However, I'd urge you to NOT read Houseman's intro if you haven't seen the movie already as he blows some crucial plot turns.

The afterword features a historical look at Chandler's Hollywood work, including some more insights about the making of the film. Interestingly some of the details are at odds with Houseman's version. It's interesting to consider how the fragmented pieces fit together and puzzle -- like Marlowe, perhaps -- what the real version of the story is, after it's been separated from the self-serving filters of the various witnesses.

A terrific little book, but recommended only if you've burned through the rest of the Chandler oeuvre and are dying for more; or if you have a particular interest in the ugly business of how movies got, and get, made.

Here described is Toronto psychiatrist Whitton's research regarding the Bardo, the state between incarnations. Whitton found that if he used hypnosis to regress patients to past lives and especially to the Bardo, in which the soul is said to choose the circumstances of its next life to work out certain personal problems, outstanding results occurred. When patients realize that they have chosen their present circumstances, their symptoms abate or disappear, replaced by a healthier attitude. This may be a new game people are playing, but as a therapeutic technique, it works for Whitton. Apparently no one else has yet tried to repeat his results. OK, but...

This book is fine for people new to the topic. It details how events in past lives affect what's happening in the current one. Has only a smattering of info about life BETWEEN lives. Also tells of famous cases historically. But if you've already read very much on the subject, read Journey of Souls by Michael Newton (and see the reviews), which addresses much more about about life BETWEEN lives.

"Life Between Life" goes where few other books on
reincarnation have gone. There are many good works regarding past-life regression, and most of them hint at or touch upon the time between lives. But Whitton and Fisher have brought that "between-time", known as "bardo", into greater focus.

With thorough research and careful follow-up on their case histories, the authors demonstrate effectively and powerfully how our soul evolution is "decided" prior to entering into another physical lifetime. Just as "Life After Life" brought us multiple descriptions of near-death-experiences and demonstrated their common elements, so "Life Between Life" does for
the bardo experiences of their clients, providing us a glimpse into our own potential for greater personal and spiritual understanding.

For those who seek practical, concrete information regarding the phenomena of reincarnation, as well as tips on how to access this knowledge in their personal lives, this is a MUST READ.

As someone who deals in life, death, and quality of life issues on a daily basis... I have always been fascinated by what lies beyond. This book took me deeper than I have been before and led me to think about issues in a different light.
I have always wondered why some people are born into luxury, and others famine- some into health, others in bodies that can't even last through childhood.
In seeing that these circumstances could be the result of our own choice, for a spiritual goal, It helped me to deal with my everyday frustrations about the inequalities we see around us.
This book was fasinating, and thought provoking.

The Best Preparation for the Math GRE

This book contains a practice exam that's about half the length of the real exam, and also an entire actual exam from a few years ago. Taking these exams demonstrates in detail what subjects you must understand, and more importantly, helps you achieve the appropriate state of mind. It's hard to explain, but many of the questions are "tricky", or seem difficult at first but are in reality extremely simple when you "grok" what they are asking. Even though there is no math review, and no explanations of the answers, they wouldn't help much anyway. I wouldn't take the Math GRE without at least looking at this book!
