Sorry Sandra, this was awful especially compared to your later books

Sandra Brown is one of the best authors around. She has been writing for 40 years and her books are wonderful. This one is an early effort. She has come a long way but clearly wasn't as good when she began as she is now. She grew into her craft from these week early books. I can't help but wonder what she could do with this idea now.

The main character, Jared, was completely ridiculous but I can see how his character could have been handled well. Very little in this book rang true. It was too long with too much forced angst going on too long. Just didn't work and I started skimming to get to the point. Some of the secondary characters were very interesting-Rudy, Crazy Jack in particular. A reworking of this concept could be so so good. But this version is not. Sandra has come a long way which is very clear from this book.

Riverting Read

The setting for this story is the territory of Texas in the late 1800's. It is a historical romance. While it is an older work by Ms. Brown, it was well written. Initially the story is slow to develop but begins picking up, after the author sets the scene and the back story for two of the significant characters. The manner in which the author writes, is like a well make film, unfolding before you, a visual master piece. The story is so well put togher and believable, the characters are all very three dimensional. Well worth reading. I rate this book at 4.5 and assign a sexy rating of 5. Well worth reading and different from her later novels.

Disappointed

Since I have read and liked some of Sandra Brown's more recent novels, I thought I would read one of her earlier books. I was sorely disappointed. The characters were flat, and character development was minimal at best. The plot was weak, and page-upon page of graphic sex hardly made up for the lack of a decent story line. All I can say is that I am glad I began with reading some of her later works. If this had been the first work by Sandra Brown that I had read, I never would have read a second.

Moving past my plateu!!

At age 20, I had already been through 3 surgeries due to bowel obstructions and Crohn's Disease (chronic inflammation of the intestinal lining). Suffering with the disease kept me fairly slim through out my 20's, but completely inactive. My well known "coke bottle shape" has always looked fine in clothes but, over the years I have lost A LOT of muscle tone and definition.
At 30 I had my son, and thankfully, my Crohn's Disease took a dive...but as a result my weight shot up. I only gained 12 lbs. during my pregnancy with my son, but after having him, I found it difficult to control the amount of food I was eating. 4 years later, I found myself at an all time high of 206 lbs. I went on a reduced carb-calorie counting diet and lost 27 lbs, but was still unhappy with the way my body looked ...and I was at a plateau. Even with my 1300-1400 calorie a day diet (I'm 5'7"), and briskly walking 3-4 times a day for 15 min, I couldn't get anymore weight off. I searched the web for a solution. I came to the realization that I needed to rebuild my muscles to boost my metabolism and reclaim my body shape... without the fat and cellulite.
I stumbled across Dr. Vedral's book while looking for a weight-training program that wouldn't impact the already limited time in my day and would cut out going to the gym (I hate the gym!). After two weeks of continuing my own diet, following her exercises and cutting my wallks down to 2 a day, I have lost 4.5 lbs! Her program is direct and well spelled out. I wake up a few minutes earlier in the morning to complete the exercises. It does take me a little more than 12 min a day, simply because I find that I need to do some stretching before and after, which she doesn't really require in this program. My only gripe would be that some of the pictured illustrations are more "cutesy" posed, than the true form that you need to start at, but the written word for the start position clarifies it for you. All and all, I couldn't be a happier. I can FEEL it working and feel confident that within a few weeks I will SEE results of more muscle tone and definition. All of my muscles have a "good" soreness they haven't felt in years and it feels great!!
Because of the light weights and basic movements I think 12 Minute Total Body Workout is a great book for those who are desiring to boost your personal fitness program, no matter were you're starting point is. Thanks, Dr. Vedral!! I love this book!!

Do you travel or are you overworked and have no time?

If so, this is for you. Joyce Vedral is a very accomplished writer and also experienced in weight training (she is an English professor at Pace University) So she can write, and she knows about her subject.
Faced with a physique that tended to put on weight, Vedral took up weight training, fell in love with it, and has written quite a few books on the subject. Here she has done an excellent job of figuring out a weight program that can be done anywhere, by nearly anyone, with simple equipment, no gym and just a bit of time.
While this won't whittle your abs down to a washboard or create monster pecs, this workout will keep you fit when you are on the go. If you are stuck in hotel rooms with no fitness centers (most of the world) or at home with kids (rest of the world) you can do this with a simple set of dumbells and a chair and telephone book. (You can even get water-fillable, collapsible dumbells to take up no weight in your suitcase.)
The routine does work the entire body and while not as good as a full workout in the gym with free weights, treadmill and Nautilus, and won't bulk you up, it is a good fitness routine to keep you ever in shape, in a minimum of time. It is NOT easy (you will be pleasantly tired afterwards) but it is effective.

Great book....

This book has a very do-able routine for anyone with limited space and limited budget. All you need are two 3-lb. dumbbells and a chair.
She does have a written cheat sheet at the back of the book, but the only quibble I have is that there should be a photo cheat sheet as well--the names of the exercises don't immediately bring them to mind.
There is good variety in the exercises, and you can use them to supplement any of the exercises in Slow Burn and Power of 10. Her explanations of Isometric Exercise and Dynamic Tension fit perfectly in with the super slow weightlifting concept.

Diana Rowland has written the classic guide to Japanese business etiquette and to the impact of Japanese culture on business and social interaction. Extremely thorough and fascinating, this guide covers all the traditions you need to understand to do business with the Japanese, in Japan or around the world. A good read even if you are just culturally curious, the book includes Japanese office layouts, diagrams showing where business guests should sit around the dinner table, and information on interpreting gestures at business meetings. Rowland covers the business and social roles of women and the difference between the real truth and the public truth. The book's final 50 pages provide a wide range of helpful, general resources, including important phone numbers and a glossary. I was looking for a straight forward primer on Japanese customs and business etiquette and found this gem.

Whether you are in business or a student of the Japanese language, this book provides a great foundation of the basics of what you can do to demonstrate respect and establish a more personal relationship with your Japanese counterpart -whether in business or social/friendship situations.

While Japanese students are required to learn English as a second language as a requirement for both high school graduation and college entry, native Japanese traditions are still held in high regard within their culture. Based upon personal experience, Japanese I have met have been very appreciative of my attempts to behave properly toward them and (as I have been told) such attempts (though awkward) demonstrate respect and sensitivity for your Japanese acquaintance, friend or business counterpart.

If you are looking for an easily understood and practical text for an overview of such practices, "Japanese Business Etiquette: A Practical Guide to Success With the Japanese" is a good choice. As your needs evolve, you'll be better equipped to evaluate supplemental books as they become available.

Excellent, "must have" writing resource

"Journal to the Self" is a wonderful smorgasbord of ideas for personal journal writing and for writing in general. Taking proven journaling techniques from a myriad of resources and condensing them into a single tome, Kathleen Adams effectively gives her readers the opportunity to explore different facets of journal writing.
Whether you have fifteen minutes or five hours, Kathleen Adams has an approach for you. From "Topics du Jour" to Dr. Ira Progroff's Steppingstones, both veteran journal keepers looking for clever methods of journaling and novices trying to find interesting ways to get going will find this book invaluable. Even if you aren't a journal keeper now, this book has a wealth of information to jumpstart your writing and will convince you to start journaling!
As a veteran journal keeper, I have enjoyed a better understanding of myself and found a greater depth of writing outside of my journal using the different prompts and exercises in this book. Although the perspective is written primarily from a self-help journal "therapy" point of view, I highly recommend it as an excellent, "must have" resource for any writer's personal library.

The 79-cent therapist

That is what the author calls her journal, the 79-cent therapist. Nowdays, when even those tiny 3x2 memo notebooks cost nearly a full dollar, and when a regular notepad will go for almost three, calculate the cost of therapy: the price of this book + shipping + some paper & pencil = ...? Compare to $150 per hour at the local shrink.
This book helped me overcome the misery of a sad breakup. I was in college. After the heart-break, I spent my free hours between classes hiding in a library cubicle, crying. Then I found the book by mistake at the local bookstore, and added a journaling time to the crying and hiding. Using just a few of the techniques in the book, it only took me a couple of months to get over the guy who broke my heart. My self esteem improved. I recommend this book as a Self-Help tool. I am into writing anyway, but I'm sure that the tricks will work even if you're only a beginner or can't even spell well.
Sometimes you feel like you can't tell anyone what's going on. When no one else will listen, paper will. Paper can handle even the craziest thoughts. I recommend this book to you.

Great for inspiring writers

This is a great book for begining writers, writers with writer's block or people trying to move along in therapy. I find that most of the best self help therapy books are actually books written for writers. I have tried oh so many books on building my self esteem but find that the books on writing do a far better job. I don't mean to imply that this is a book on self esteem but when you learn to go beyond the blocks that stop writers, you also get beyond the personal blocks that stop you in your day to day life. This is a book of lists that you create and they are about you and your life or the lives of those around you. This book helps you move beyond someone else telling you how to live your life and gets you going on drawing your own path; it's about finding out which ways work for you; what you enjoy doing and what you would like to be doing. It appears to be just about making lists but while your left brain is making lists, your right brain is having time to create and see what it can do with all these different ideas. I would recommend this book to writers, counselors and therapists and people just wanting to get out of the parking lot of their life

This brief book collects excerpts from the question-and-answer column that Dunn ( Geek Love ) formerly wrote for an alternative weekly newspaper in Portland, Ore. As "The Slicer," Dunn is more irreverent than many advice columnists, taking on such issues as why orgasms clear the sinuses, the etiquette of body piercing and the psychology of women who leave droplets of urine on public toilet seats. Dunn's investigations of language terms like "86" and "cracker" are entertaining. But some queries, about laundered money and decaffeinated coffee, are run-of-the-mill while others, such as her instructions on how to perform bar tricks with flies, are of dubious taste. Moreover, the book has a strong local bias, as "The Slicer" answers questions on racism in Portland, on military recruiting in Portland's high schools and on the size of one of Portland's parks. This book was originally published in Portland as a limited edition entitled The Slice .

Why does this book have the image of the cover of the book written by Mark Leyner and Billy Goldberg, M.D.? Their book, which I'd give ten stars if I could, is similarly titled, "Why Do Men Have Nipples? Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini".
Something's fishy here. And to be clear I have not read Ms. Dunn's book. I stumbled across it looking for their book to send as a gift.
