Perfect for the beginner and expert alike!

I learned how to sharpen knives from my father and he his father, this book covers what your father never knew. After practicing on old knives for a month or two I was sharpening like an expert. People are amazed at how sharp I can make an edge, it's a thrill to watch a persons eyes pop out of their head when, in a very short period of time, you have taken their dull, bent and rusted knife edge sharpened it to a glistening working tool and are using it to shave your beard! I've had friends drop off buckets of knives they thought they'd never use again. This is THE BOOK, the bible of tool sharpening. It's simple and easy to understand. If there is someone who would like to give this book to me as a gift, I won't turn it down. My local library is getting tired of me checking out the same book over and over again!

Real Expertise on Getting Your Knives Really Sharp

This books slashes through the old wive's tails and misinformation in which the subject of knife sharpening has been known to be shrouded. Juranitch teaches with authority, and gives specific instructions which with a little practice make it fairly straight forward to get knives amazingly sharp. He also recommends the guides and hones manufactured by his own company. Though a little skeptical, I bought some equipment and found its performance to bear out his claims. Amazon has been indicating for quite a while that the publisher is out of stock, however the book is available from the Razor Edge Systems website. (Amazon frowns on URLs in reviews so I won't include it, but you can probably get it on your first guess. Otherwise use a search enginge.)

Best book on sharpening

Sharpening is a topic that has mainly consisted of folklore, and journalistic re-intrepretation of folklore. Juranitch is the first to really examine what it takes to produce a truly sharp edge, including looking at edges under microscopes and giving experienced tool users implements he has sharpened for blind tests to see how well what "everybody knows" about obtaining an edge actually holds up. He comes to some surprising conclusions, and can back up what he says with repeatable results. If you've ever wondered why you work and work at sharpening, and still don't get the edge you want - this is the book for you!

Condescending...

I've read all of James Patterson's other Maximum Rides books and I loved them, they are clearly meant for teenagers without the effort you see other acclaimed writers make to make something appeal to children. Throughout those other novels, I had never really noticed that it had subtle things he thought would appeal to children, the children against the adults concept and so on...

So I really loved his past books and faithfully 'clicked' for the new Maximum Ride book over and over. Now that it's out I find it condescending and he seems to think that teenagers have no intelligence. James Patterson tries to blatantly sell the concept of global warming to his readers, which I understand at 14 I'm rather more well-versed in politics and important issues than other readers, but his writing about it made it seem like he was writing to a little five year old. Much of the book was him blatantly expressing the effects of global warming, and very little of the nail-biting action I've come to expect of this series.

I have absolutely no issue with authors trying to express their opinions through their books, however, when it's done as blatantly and boringly as this is it seems as if it's like an insult to my intelligence. Am I not supposed to notice that this book is basically him trying to sell the concept of global warming to the more impressionable readers? It wouldn't have been bad if he had bothered to be subtle, sort of like the Golden Compass by Philip Pullman (still getting off his controversial ideas to the younger set, yet leaving the chance for ignorance of the underlying themes there), but instead he chose to spend half the (small) book lecturing the reader on Global Warming by Max's sarcastic (for the most part) narration of it.

The beginning of the book was promising, with less adventure than usual but still interesting. Some slightly random events happened that were never fully explained (for those of you who read the book the green wire incident), but on the whole interesting and I was ready for the huge climax and the fun battles or whatever... Yeah not so much . .. By the end I felt like I had read a book meant for a five year old, like all of those little picture books with a moral or point (like telling the story of Hurricane Katrina). Even the 'Bad Guys' were more like something you would come to expect from a show like 'The Replacements' on Disney Channel than something supposedly meant for teenagers.

And the most annoying thing is, he would never have done this in one of his adult series. Anyways, I'm really let-down by how condescending the book seemed after all the excitement and I really hope he'll release a new one next year that mirrors the excitement and suspense of his earlier three books.

Major Letdown

The release of a sequel is an anticipated event, especially if the sequel is written by a wildly-popular, best-selling author like James Patterson. Approximately 4.8 million copies have been sold of the previous three books in the Maximum Ride series, so hopes were high that Final Warning, the new installment, would be just as entertaining. When a sequel fails to live up to the standards of the previous books in the series, readers feel let down.

There are three issues that affect the quality of Final Warning. First, there is a lack of adventure in this installment of the action-packed Maximum Ride adventure series. It seemed to be more of an extended brainstorming session instead of actual problem-solving. Second, the length of this book is an issue. For a novel that has a retail price of $20, 272 pages is pretty skimpy -- especially when you consider that The Angel Experiment, the first book in the series, had 432 pages. Finally, and most importantly, is the story itself. If the story had been interesting and new, the reader would be able to overlook the page length. Instead of adding anything new to the story, Patterson chose to focus on the issue of global warming and have The Flock, the six bird kids we've come to love, assist with scientific research in Antarctica. Final Warning appears to be more of a filler book than a necessary part of the series. In fact, if a reader were to skip Final Warning, there probably wouldn't be a problem catching up when a fifth book is published.

Instead of a character-driven storyline, Patterson has given us an extended public service announcement on global warming, and while global warming is a serious issue we need to think about, a young adult adventure novel might not be the best place to hammer the issue home.

How about a re-write?

I bought the first three Maximum Ride books for my twelve-year-old son last Friday. In four days, he had read them all, and so this afternoon, we bought the newest "Final Warning." Thank goodness I only had to pay $12 because the first words out of my son's mouth as he exited his bedroom after an hour and a half reading the brief 270 or so pages were: "Mom, where's the shredder?" He was completely frustrated and disappointed and began to question the entire Maximum Ride series, looking back to see if Mr. Patterson had slipped in propaganda into those books (but which may have been more easily overlooked given the first three books were, in my son's opinion, far superior in plot and action.) Trying his best to come to some positive conclusion about "Final Warning", my son decided that perhaps Mr. Patterson, after having been bugged to write "just one more" Maximum Ride tale, chose to put out this utterly disappointing sequel in order to stave off future requests for more books (and, yes, he used the word "stave".) On top of that, my son felt bad that I had wasted $12 on the book. I reassured him and told him he ought to re-write the book himself this summer, as he thinks the story should have been told. Either that, or we could mail our copy of "Final Warning" back to Mr. Patterson. Both ideas put a smile back on his face. My son's final recommendation: don't bother with "Final Warning."

New Light on the Dark Ages

The Thirteenth Tribe, Arthur Koestler

Arthur Koestler was born in Budapest, studied science and psychology in Vienna, and became a foreign correspondent for various European newspapers. He covered the Spanish Civil War, and later joined the French Foreign Legion, then the British Army. His most famous novel is "The Darkness at Noon". This 1976 book discusses the ancient Khazar Empire that flourished in the Dark Ages, the seventh to the tenth centuries between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, an area called Caucasia where the Aryans originated. They were wiped out by the forces of Genghis Khan. Some took refuge in Eastern Europe and had an impact on the racial composition and social heritage of modern Jewry.

Part One tells of the "Rise and Fall of the Khazars". Their cavalry was the origin of the word "Hussar". They adopted Judaism to avoid becoming a vassal of either the Christian ruler in Constantinople or the Moslem ruler in Babylon. Previously they worshiped pagan gods. Chapter III tells about their state at its peak. Emperor Leo the Khazar ruled Byzantium in 775-780. The invasions by Vikings or Norsemen affected many nations around Khazaria. The Khazar state disappeared by the end of the 13th century (p.132).

Part Two discusses "The Heritage" after the Mongol invasion. Khazar people migrated to the west (eastern Europe), such as in Hungary (p.142). The Black Death also depopulated the former Khazar heartland (p.144). Place names in the Ukraine and Poland are derived from `Khazar' or `Zhid' (p.145). The Polish kingdom attracted immigrants (p.149). Chapter VI discusses the migration of Jews into Europe since Roman times. The Black Death killed many, and led to the persecution of the Jews. Yiddish is an amalgam of Hebrew, medieval German, Slavonic, and other elements written in Hebrew characters (p.172). The `East-Middle German' dialects came from medieval Austria and Bavaria (p.173).

Chapter VIII discusses "Race and Myth" about the Sephardim and Ashkenazim. Physical anthropology shows too many differences among Jewish groups to form a race. In any nation there is a greater similarity between Jews and Gentiles than those in different countries. Interbreeding and proselytizing are noted in the Old Testament (p.187). The aquiline nose is found among North American Indians and various Caucasian tribes, but not among true Semites (p.191). A way of life affects not only facial expressions but also physical features (p.195).

Arthur Koestler tells about old friends who emigrated to the United States before World War II. They acquired "an American physiognomy" (p.195). [Ever notice how you can sometimes identify some Europeans as non-Americans by their face?] Koestler goes on to describe the effects of inbreeding, genetic drift, and selection. Koestler ends with his claim that world Jewry is of Khazar-Turkish rather than Semitic origin (p.199). The misconceptions about a "Jewish type" ignores geographic reality, social environment, and social inheritance. The four Appendices provide a background to this book.

Unbiased and Well Researched

Arthur Koestler deserved a lot of respect and admiration, for having the courage and willingness to explore a touchy and controversial subject for most anthropologists. The book was well-written and researched (Mr. Koestler was an established author and thinker), and he provided insightful anecdotes when documentary evidence was lacking. Anyone interested in reading this book, should have a better than average understanding of the history of the Jewish people (especially of the Diaspora and post-Diaspora), the Central Asian tribal groups, Western Europe (during the Dark Ages), and of the Byzantine Empire. But the reader should be open to divergent views of the history of the peoples in question. The author made a good case for his hypothesis, and presented this in a concise and sometimes humorous way, that demonstrated his own personal experience with bias and prejudice. Far more groups of races and nations on this earth: India, Persia, Egypt, Hellas, Judea, etc., etc. in the course of human history (especially in the Old World of Asia Minor), were/are interrelated than scholars and academics are willing to admit or explore for obvious reasons (they will not go against the status quo). There was nothing presented here that showed or suggested, that the Jewish people do not deserve our respect and admiration for retaining their unique identity and heritage. Especially, in a world that has treated them with the utmost hostility throughout most of their history, save for a few exceptions. I will be looking forward to reading more of Arthur Koestler's books. (BTW: "Darkness at Noon" is an excellent novel by Arthur Koestler, the book predates Orwell's "1984" by nine years, and their both very similar.)

I got mine but im not happy to it .because it looks and smells old.the first page doesnt look good.and it didn't meet my expectation.o thought it was a big size of book but I was wrong its only the same size of a Nobel booklet.you really need TLC to just read it or else you will regret it.its too fragile.

A "5 Course Meal" - Not a "Drive-Through"

I stumbled upon this gem after being disappointed with several previous DeMille Novels. The Talbot Odyssey is a "thinking person's" novel. It, much like real life, is NOT all excitement and adrenaline. DeMille does an outstanding job of character development and plot organization and development. While the crux of the plot is not an imminent threat which we face; it is entertaining and afterall this is a novel not a strategic arms treatise. This book requires tenacity from the reader and NO Page Skimming, or you'll miss the clues and hints that DeMille sews throughout the pages. If you've been disappointed with the Gold Coast and Plum Island and the Lion's Game - BUT if you liked the Charm School, Spencerville, and Word of Honor, then you will like the Talbot Odyssey.

Good Book

DeMille is my favourite author and I really enjoy all of his books. Word of Honour is still my favourite followed by Plum Island and Gold Coast. One thing about Demille that I like is that each of his books are different. Talbot Odyssey is a 'spy' novel similar to Ludlum. Although it was a little more off-beat than his other novels it was filled with action and heroic efforts. The characters were interesting and the story kept you guessing (and paranoid. I wish there were more DeMille novels to read because he's spoiled me.

Breathtakingly awesome!

I read the first 1/3 and was bored, so I put it down at the end of my vacation. 9 months later (ok I forgot about it) I picked it back up and couldn't put it down again. The first 1/3 sets up the story and the characters, and then the rest is non-stop action. It had an incredible ending. In fact I read the last 80 pages nonstop until 2am because I couldn't stop myself! If you imagine the setting (back during the cold war) you'll really enjoy it.

Good But Not Vintage Parker

"Dirty Money" is a continuation of "Nobody Runs Forever" with "Ask The Parrot" occurring between them. While it can be read as a stand-alone, there is at least one crucial scene that makes sense only if you know what happened in "Ask The Parrot."

"Dirty Money" refers to the marked or "poisoned money" that Parker and his associates stole in an armored car robbery in "Nobody Runs Forever." As that book concluded, the heat was getting so intense after the robbery that Parker and company were forced to hide the 2.2 million dollars in the loft of a rural abandoned church and escape as best they could. Now, barely a week later, Parker feels compelled to grab his partner, McWhitney, and try to recover the money before the cops find it or his other associate, Nick (who is now a cop killer) gets to it first or uses its location as trade bait with the feds.

Add to this combustible mix Sandra Loscalzo, a bounty hunter, who has partially figured out Parker's dilemma and wants a cut of the dough, and several cops from the previously mentioned novels who are still nosing around. Even Parker's long time squeeze, Claire, is prominently featured in this installment.

The plot simply focuses on Parker's plan to surreptiously get the money out of the church in a community still teeming with cops, get it back home, and arrange for money laundering to trade dirty money for clean money--at a large discount. Along the way, he and his partners have to contend with confrontations with police, negotiations with a past adversary for money laundering, and bad guys out to steal their haul before they can launder it. Of course tension is ratcheted up by accidental run ins with police patrols, a desperate Nick, and a double cross or two.

I rated this book lower than I usually do for a Parker novel for several reasons. I thought the pacing and action was noticeably slower than usual in "Dirty Money." Although there was tension at times, I sensed that Parker was less malevolent, dare I say, more mellow in this installment than I have come to expect. It is a very quick read with Stark's (Donald E. Westlake) usual spare and efficient styling and I recommend it as very good entertainment.

The third part of a trilogy does not disappoint, but when did a Parker novel ever really disappoint?? A combination of clever and forceful, Dirty Money resolves the leftover issues of the prior two novels, ties it up neatly, and frees us for the next round of Parker efforts. Terrific.

Damage mechanics is concerned with mechanics-based analyses of microstructural events in solids responsible for changes in their response to external loading. The microstructural events can occur as cracks, voids, slipped regions, etc., with a spatial distribution within the volume of a solid. If a solid contains oriented elements in its microsctructure, e.g. fibers, the heterogeneity and asisotropy aspects create situations which form a class of problems worthy of special treatment. This book deals with such treatments with particular emphasis on application to technological composite materials.

Chapter one describes the basic principles underlying both the micromechanics approach and the continuum damage mechanics approach. It also reviews the relevant statistical concepts. The next three chapters are devoted to developments of the continuum damage mechanics approach related to characterization of damage with internal variables, evolution of damage and its coupling with other inelastic effects such as plasticity. Chapter 5 describes observations of damage from notches in composite laminates and puts forward some pragmatic modelling ideas for a complex damage configuration. The next two chapters form the bulk of the micromechanics approach in this volume. The first one deals with microcracking and the other with interfacial damage in composite materials.
