Role models for a generation of homeschoolers, David and Micki Colfax are teachers turned ranchers who taught their four sons at home in the 1970s and '80s and schooled three of them into Harvard. Isolation on their northern California homestead forced them into the experience, but this resourceful family eventually discovered all kinds of advantages to home education. Like a modern-day Little House on the Prairie, the Colfax children learned about geometry while constructing outbuildings on their ranch, explored aspects of chemistry and biology as they improved their livestock and garden, and generally discovered the value of self-reliance as they went about life without TV or neighbors. Their world is described in clear, warm words that illustrate the fondness these parents and children possess for each other. Family photos grouped throughout the book show the boys working and learning together.

The Colfaxes don't purport to be experts; they don't prescribe a formula for their success. Rather, their experience is described as a trial-and-error effort, with some of their mistakes offered up as lessons for others. The value of critically examining textbooks in advance, for instance, is learned after one son falls behind in algebra using a schoolbook that touts "new math" principles. The Colfaxes' philosophy is that every child is gifted. Parents don't need to be certified teachers to teach them (although it does ward off doubters). But, despite the contention of some homeschoolers, the Colfaxes do caution that teaching at home requires much time and money--and they don't advise it for single parents or most working women. Any parent interested in connecting with his or her child, however, will find the Colfax take on life an enjoyable and enlightening read. About the Author
Colfax is a fourth-term at-large trustee of his county's board of education, and until recently hosted a weekly public radio public affairs program. A former professor of sociology, he has served as a social research and forensic consultant.

Colfax is a graduate of Penn State who attended the London School of Economics. She has taught in the United States, Canada, and England, and has served as director of field operations for many educational survey research projects.

A wonderful choice for anyone considering homeschooling

Micki and David Colfax are wonderful writers as well as educators. The book is written in easy to understand language. While they do not go into a day-to-day senario about homeschooling, they do talk about their decision to homeschool, how it worked for them, and what a typical day might be like. It really underscores the fact that children WILL learn without being forced into a one-size-fits-all box. Children are creative and will use their own skills to get to where they need to be. The sources at the end of the book are not really that helpful considering the book was written a while back, but it is still a good read.

Loved it!

I loved this book. I've read it once and will be re-reading it again in a few weeks as a refresher. It opened my eyes to a world of possibilities and things I had not thought of. I am so thankful to them for sharing their insight and experiences with homeschooling. It's given me a new determination and confidence that I can homeschool my children successfully.

Loved It!! (And I'm a Christian)

Unlike the reviewer who said "Yuck!" about this because she was a Christian homeschooler, I LOVED IT! (And I'm a Christian). In this book, I wasn't looking for "christian" advice on homeschooling. I just wanted to see how these people did it and got their kids into really great schools. I can incorporate my own spiritual twist on things if I want to.

Actually, I did NOT want to homeschool. As the mother of a only child (a whip-smart boy who needed a lot of attention) I was looking forward to FREEEEEDOM and lattes with friends. Well. It was obvious that he would be bored in school. Plus, I didn't like the system telling me when I could vacation. I also didn't want to hold him back (he's doing high school math at age 9). And if my main goal was 'freedom' (a babysitting service) well then, why did I have a child in the first place??? So we started homeschooling. STILL going strong 9 years later! It's been such a rewarding, fun, amazing blessing/experience.

Read it. Try homeschooling. You can always give them back to the government if it doesn't work out ;o)

Could be HEAT of the Night

It was hard to say just who's story this was - so many characters all with depth, strengths and charm of their own - society twin sisters, Savannah the over achiever top attorney and Susan the divorcee socialite; their childhood and best friend Megan raised from blue collar to socialite thru marriage. Then, as always, there are the men in their lives - Sam, the hard nosed, down to earth cop; Will, Megan's loving society husband; and last but not least, Jared Snow - the voice, the heart and the soul in the heart of the night!
This story was impressive showing very successful and dynamic people on the outside and examining the all too human complexities of sibling rivalries, issues of self esteem in the privileged world of the Newport elite! Toss in some really hot and sinfully sensual love scenes as well as a mysterious socialite kidnapping and you have in this, an almost perfect read! This was an extremely fast page-turner that I consider high praise from a die-hard historical romance genre book reader such as myself. This story invoked a lot of feeling here and I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to any of those who like to read into the `heart of the night'.

One of the best books I have read

I read this book about 3 years ago. I loved it. When I am buying a birthday gift for friends, I often get a copy of this book for them. This book kept me so interested. I love Barbara Delinsky, buy this is my favorite!

IF ONLY REAL MEN WERE MORE LIKE HIM! YOU FORGET THAT SAVANNAH AND JARED HAVE ONLY KNOWN EACH OTHER SUCH A SHORT TIME BEFORE BECOMING DEEPLY INVOLVED WITH ONE ANOTHER. IT ISN'T HARD TO BUY. Fantastic coverage of the time of war

Fantastic coverage of the time of war, its affects on France and her people, and a look at part of the history that now defines us. World War II had profound effects on the generations that followed, wherever they were born, raised, or travelled. The insights, for me, into the thoughts and minds of the then-enemy Germans, was very enlightening. One could empathize, somewhat, with those drawn in but not totally committed. Difficult choices between culture, education, moral values, and duty. Excellent read!

Too big to get close to

Well, the big set piece scenes of the liberation of Paris are marvelous to watch, but because the sound seems dubbed in afterwards, the more intimate dialogue scenes rarely come off. It's a big moment in 20th century history, and I wouldn't want to have lived my life without seeing this movie, but if you want to get close to the French resistance, see Jean-Pierre Melville's "L'Armée des Ombres."

Great movie, lousy DVD

The movie is a classic, no doubt about that.

While the film's visual transfer to DVD is fine, even excellent, the audio and subtitles are horrible.

This is one of those unusual films which includes dialogue in both English and French. One wants, for example, to hear Glenn Ford speaking English. But the DVD offers *only* all English or all French, in other words, no original soundtrack.

Compounding the problem, the English subtitles were evidently written by someone who isn't a native speaker of either English or French, and who may not have even been watching the movie. Every other sentence is mistranslated. Times are altered. Names are altered. Odd sentences are added that aren't in the dialogue. It's just bizarre -- I've never seen anything like it.

So four and a half stars for the movie, but only two stars for the DVD transfer.

Another dated retread shows its age - but better than most

Virginal camp counselor Kathleen has a torrid affair with Erik, a videographer (two days after meeting him, she has sex with the virtual stranger in the forest). After an life-threatening accident, she mistakenly thinks that he is married and rather than confront him about the woman visiting his hospital room (his sister), she slinks away and has their love child.

Fast forward several years, where she has moved on with her life, and as she is about to marry Seth her boss who is disabled and has taken care of her and her son all these years (though he is unable to perform in the bedroom). Suddenly Erik has returned to the fold and she learns the truth about his so-called "wife." She now finds herself in a bind - should she marry the man who loves her more than life itself, and has dedicated himself to her and her child, or should she choose the passion that she experienced with her one and only lover?

Unfortunately, author Brown has taken the cowardly way out by enabling the wimpy heroine to not to make that all important decision after all. It defininitely shows its age, but it will tug at your heartstrings nonetheless.

Dated romance

I usually try to stay away from romances written in the 70s and 80s. However, the first Sandra Brown book that I read was in the 80s and I enjoyed it. With this one I had to stop reading it after the male lead turns ugly and insulting when the heroine turns him down after only knowing him for 2 days. If I had liked him before that I would not have then thought I was in love with him after that. The female lead felt too embarrassed to tell him that she was a virgin. Who cares what her reason was! Even in the 80s a women could say NO!!

I like a lead that I think I could fall in love with but who would fall for a bore like that. Even the first time he kissed seemed like he was forcing himself on her. Are his blond good looks supposed to compensate for his overbearing personality? Then her motherly friend tells her that he is being such a jerk because he cares for her. Is he entitled to sex for some reason?
Maybe the rest of the book can make me care if she is with him or not. I don't see how. Even if he finds out that she is a virgin and is sorry for his horrible behavior, it will not make me see him in a favorable light. Even if she was a street walker she has the right to tell him to keep it in his pants.

Sorry Sandra for my rant. You have a lot of books that I like. This just is not one of them.

The Silken Web is one of my favorites by Sandra Brown and I own almost every book she's ever written. Brown's work combines just the right amounts of decency and steam to form an overall piece that's not trashy, but that is ensured to make your temperature rise. Like to read on your lunchbreak? Rest assured, the covers of Brown's books do not consist of two lovers tearing each others clothes off! This book is about a love so spellbinding, your heart breaks a little along with those of the protagonists, and soars like a bird when love gets back on course. If you want a read to revive your faith in romance, this is your book. Enjoy!
