Another dated retread shows its age - but better than most

Virginal camp counselor Kathleen has a torrid affair with Erik, a videographer (two days after meeting him, she has sex with the virtual stranger in the forest). After an life-threatening accident, she mistakenly thinks that he is married and rather than confront him about the woman visiting his hospital room (his sister), she slinks away and has their love child.

Fast forward several years, where she has moved on with her life, and as she is about to marry Seth her boss who is disabled and has taken care of her and her son all these years (though he is unable to perform in the bedroom). Suddenly Erik has returned to the fold and she learns the truth about his so-called "wife." She now finds herself in a bind - should she marry the man who loves her more than life itself, and has dedicated himself to her and her child, or should she choose the passion that she experienced with her one and only lover?

Unfortunately, author Brown has taken the cowardly way out by enabling the wimpy heroine to not to make that all important decision after all. It defininitely shows its age, but it will tug at your heartstrings nonetheless.

Dated romance

I usually try to stay away from romances written in the 70s and 80s. However, the first Sandra Brown book that I read was in the 80s and I enjoyed it. With this one I had to stop reading it after the male lead turns ugly and insulting when the heroine turns him down after only knowing him for 2 days. If I had liked him before that I would not have then thought I was in love with him after that. The female lead felt too embarrassed to tell him that she was a virgin. Who cares what her reason was! Even in the 80s a women could say NO!!

I like a lead that I think I could fall in love with but who would fall for a bore like that. Even the first time he kissed seemed like he was forcing himself on her. Are his blond good looks supposed to compensate for his overbearing personality? Then her motherly friend tells her that he is being such a jerk because he cares for her. Is he entitled to sex for some reason?
Maybe the rest of the book can make me care if she is with him or not. I don't see how. Even if he finds out that she is a virgin and is sorry for his horrible behavior, it will not make me see him in a favorable light. Even if she was a street walker she has the right to tell him to keep it in his pants.

Sorry Sandra for my rant. You have a lot of books that I like. This just is not one of them.

The Silken Web is one of my favorites by Sandra Brown and I own almost every book she's ever written. Brown's work combines just the right amounts of decency and steam to form an overall piece that's not trashy, but that is ensured to make your temperature rise. Like to read on your lunchbreak? Rest assured, the covers of Brown's books do not consist of two lovers tearing each others clothes off! This book is about a love so spellbinding, your heart breaks a little along with those of the protagonists, and soars like a bird when love gets back on course. If you want a read to revive your faith in romance, this is your book. Enjoy!

Decker is hired to prove that TV host Dickie Lockhart cheats to win fortunes in Florida bass-fishing tournaments. The investigation makes Decker a prey to hired killers who have murdered other "snoops," but the detective also finds a strong if weird ally in a hermit who calls himself Skink. Along with two honest cops, Skink goes with Decker to the lake where a big tournament is under way and the four make a tremendous splash, to the dismay of the assembly. Hardest hit is Reverend Weeb, Lockhart's sponsor on the Outdoor Christian Network, whose generous supporters don't know that he's addicted to prostitutes, profanity and land-grabbing. The cast of bizarre characters and the suspenseful events confirm Hiaasen's reputation for creating singular villains and heroes. While he's probably unpopular among some fellow citizens in his home state, he will certainly please readers who appreciate the Swiftian wit in his cautionary tales.

The "double whammy" is a special lure used in the competitive bass fishing underlying the plot of this thriller by Miami journalist Hiaasen ( The Tourist Season ). Someone is cheating at bass fishing competitions, and people are getting killed. Enter R.J. Decker, former photojournalist and ex-con. Decker teams up with Skink, an unbelievable character who lives in a forest shack, eats road-killed animals, and reads Dostoyevsky (and turns out to be the ex-governor of Florida). Decker's an unlikely hero, always a step behind. Other characters include the usual corrupt TV evangelists, rednecks, smart black policemen, and betrayingly beautiful women. Hiaasen's funniest book--and THAT is saying something!

I stumbled across one of those bass fishing shows a few days before I read this book. I couldn't believe people would sit around and watch people fish! But they do. And Hiaasen had a ball writing about it, too.
This book has so many great moments. Skink and the poodle is one of the funniest things I've ever read. I laughed so hard, tears streamed down my face. I called a friend and tried to read the scene over the phone, but I couldn't stop laughing. It's all right, my friend knew I was crazy. He rushed out and bought the book, though! The pit bull in the trailer park scene and the aftermath is also priceless. I guess this is Hiaasen's dog book as well as his fish book.
Needless to say, if you haven't read Hiaasen, start with this one. You'll be hooked.

This book is not "chic lit", but one of the few guy tales available today.

Carl Hiaasen writes Florida books as if this state is the only piece of the land that has wild places that must be saved from the unwashed literary world. The story here focuses on Bass fishing and the sport's crazed followers.

You will be engaged in an unbelievably complex story involving the corruption that exists in the fishing world of the South. This book includes the exploits of Skink, a recluse that travels the Florida landscape searching for recent road kill to prepare for dinner.

Hiaasen is an acquired taste, and I have acquired it.

I'm a huge Carl fan and I loved this book but I was a bit stunned to find so many spelling and grammatical errors. I previously read the paperback version of this book and discovered no errors so I can only conclude that when the book was digitized, it was completed without any proofreading. This is unacceptable and a huge insult to the author. Come on Kindle people, let's get it together. This is an embarrassment!

THE STORY OF THE DISCOVERY OF "AUSTRALOPITHECUS AFARENSIS"

Donald Carl Johanson (born 1943) is an American paleoanthropologist; he has also written Lucy's Child: The Discovery of a Human Ancestor, From Lucy to Language, Ancestors: In Search of Human Origins, and Lucy's Legacy: The Quest for Human Origins. [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 409-page hardcover edition.]

He wrote in the Prologue to this 1981 of his team's discovery of the "Lucy" fossil: "There was no bone duplication. But a single individual of what? On preliminary examination it was very hard to say, for nothing quite like it had ever been discovered. The camp was rocking with excitement. That first night we never went to bed at all. We talked and talked. We drank beer after beer. There was a tape recorder in the camp, and a tape of the Beatles song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' went belting out into the night sky, and was played at full volume over and over again out of sheer exuberance. At some point during that unforgettable evening... the new fossil picked up the name of Lucy, and has been so known ever since..." (Pg. 18)

Of the arguments of Sir Solly Zuckerman [Beyond the Ivory Tower, he notes, "With Zuckerman kicking up more and more biometric dust, Le Gros Clark thought it appropriate to challenge him to produce a full set of chimpanzee teeth that bore any resemblance to australopithecine teeth. Zuckerman could not. He ignored the challenge and continued to fire off statistical salvos until professional statisticians began pointing out that his figures had not been calculated properly." (Pg. 76)

He notes, "[C. Owen] Lovejoy does not have a good explanation for the condition of Lucy's hand ro arm. Compared with a human arm, hers is rather long, so he again asks the question: what did she use the long arm for?... Lucy's sexual strategy had turned her into a biped. Did she climb at all? If so, how much?... how does one explain her hand? It should have long, apelike fingers, but it does not. They are rather short. Furthermore, although it has the fully opposable thumb of humans, the muscles of the base of the thumb appear to have been small. This means that ... power gripping which involved the thumb and the entire hand was poor. This is exactly opposite to what scientists hitherto have thought... Lovejoy admits that it may take years to unravel that problem." (Pg. 348-349)

I love Lucy

Oh no Richard E. Leakey move over for Donald Johanson, who discovered Lucy (AUSTRALOPITHECUS AFARENSIS) opening up a whole new chapter, or book on the History of the human species.

The book its self has a small section of color pictures. There are black and white illustrations of key points and charts. Peppered throughout the book there are monochrome pictures.

I found chapter 3 the most intriguing on what is Lucy. The pull the John the teeth apart put them back together pull them apart again until you know what Lucy really is.

There's an extensive index and a useful bibliography.

You will want to own this book just for technical literacy and to be able to compare and contrast to other writers on the subject.
