My sister, Kathleen, first gave this book to me over 30 years ago as a young woman. Now, with time, I have read it again. Except for the many French terms and quotes, it is a thrilling and incredible account of the true story of this woman's marooning and how she survived. This is the crux of the book, the survival parts and how she made it. An excellent and thrilling read.

Her finest work

Colleen McCulloch has written many books but I consider this, a very early work, to be her finest. It is a simple story of unconventional love, beautifully told. The characters are very strongly drawn, and it is easy to identify with the feelings of Mary Horton as she comes to grips with her love for a young man so totally unlike her. It is a topic which could so easily have led to a different and tasteless result - instead it is a truly lovely book.

If you liked Forrest Gump. READ THIS! (A Grade)

There are no words to describe this wonderful and moving novel. Yes, it maybe a bit outdated, but the charatcer of Tim has so much heart and goodness in him, that most readers will wish he was real so they could take him home.
Tim is a somewhat mentally handicapped 25 year old (think Forrest Gump). He lives with his mother, father and sister and basically just works and lives a simple life. He lives this simple life because that is what everybody thinks he is limited to. Until Mary comes along....
Mary is a 40 something spinster, who likes order and no confusion. She lives in her own simple life also till Tim enters it. At first it looks like an employee to employer and then mother to son, then friend to friend. It becomes so much more complicated as their feelings grow into something more. But many things are against them, the age difference, their lifestyles and most importantly, Tim's mental capacity.
Through Tim's outlook on life, Mary comes out of her shell and finally enjoys what is around her. She helps Tim feel important and learn so much more then he was ever able to understand.
This story becomes so much more than an enduring love between a man and a woman. We see two lost soul who equal each other in so many ways.
The only thing missing is a much longer book, or even a sequel to see how Mary and Tim have succeeded.
So beautiful and poignant!!

A repeat read

As a person who adores both Harry Potter and Salman Rushdie, this is one of my all-time favorite books. I have read this book at least 8 times in the past few years, and I have lent it to many a friend and loved one. The story is engrossing, the characters are complex and endearing, and McCullough's writing is magical. As a writer and an editor, this is a story I appreciate every time I read it.

Hard to Put Down

Definitely not as clean or elegant as Ms. Brown's later writing. But 'meh' aside, I kept telling myself to put it down but then I'd read a little more. What the story lacked in finesse, it gifted in suspense and secondary characters, which are treat. Brown is still a favorite even if the 'style' of Mirror Image seemed a bit dated.

Heart wrenchingly HOT!!!!!

Avery, a reporter ends up on the same flight as a senator's wife, and it crashes and burns. Avery is taken to the hospital and labelled his wife. She takes the responsibility of becoming the mother of his daughter while starting the greatest love affair meant between husband and wife. Meanwhile Tate, the senator, is a little suspicious of his "wife's" change in attitude. Their relationship develops on the steamy side, if not trustingly, but they just get stronger and start believing in one another again. It is such a heart wrenching tale, I could read it over and over again.

I first read this book before the new cover came out. It is still one of my favorites. If you liked this one, you will like Mary Alice Monroe's "Girl in the Mirror", and "Shades of Twilight" by Linda Howard.

Very good writing. It kept my interest til the end. There were interesting twists to the plot, so I was surprised at the ending. I've always been a Sandra Brown fan and her books are guaranteed to be interesting.

Invaluable

This fascinating collection of Batman stories published between 1939 and 1983 is an invaluable goldmine for anyone who is interested in Batman or in the history of comics. There are many books detailing and explaining the history of comics, but it's much more rewarding to actually see it happening, and this book gives you a rare chance to read some classic comics which are by now practically unobtainable and frighteningly valuable. The collection is fascinating both in terms of Batman's history and comics history. On the one hand, it presents some of the most important stories in the development of the character throughout the years - stories like `The Origin of Batman' from 1948, which finally revealed Batman's story in its final version as well as the identity of his parents' killer; `Dr. Hugo Strange and the Mutant Monsters', from the very first issue of Batman, the story that introduced the villain Dr. Strange; and `The First Batman', a classic and often referenced story in which a lot is revealed about Batman's father. But at the same time, you get a rare and precious opportunity to view stories and artwork by some of the finest comic book artists to walk the face of the earth, and explore the development of the medium from the 40s to the 80s. Classic artwork by the great man himself, Bob Kane, is a real treat; stories by some of the great writers like Gardner Fox and Bill Finger; through greats like Dick Sprang, Carmine Infantino, Charles Paris, and up to the great Denny O'Neil, and Neal Adams, Dick Giordano and Archie Goodwin, among others. The later stories show brilliantly how both the art and writing developed to create more original and inventive stories - like `The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne', which suggests a possible future for Batman; `To Kill A Legend', one of the classic Elseworlds tales; and `Death Strikes at Midnight and Three', in which Denny O'Neal and W. M. Rogers take the format to its ends.
Since I'm a huge Batman and DC fan, and also a creator of comics and very much interested in the artwork and format of comics, this book was amazingly valuable to me. I recommended it for anyone who is interested in this great and unappreciated medium, and for anyone who wants to learn something about the Caped Crusader.

Good for comics history buffs

This book is really good if you are interested in watching the development of the Batman since his origin in 1939. The almost "film noir" style of the 1930's/ early 40's Batman is actually really cool.

It is actually the fifties and sixties of Batman that are a little campy and cliched, and while I still like the character and the stories of that era, the Batman of the late 70's and 80's is the Batman I grew up with and loved.

This book is a good anthology of a character whose origin and inner psychology have fluctuated a great deal since his first appearance.

Worth the price if you buy a used copy.

Good overview of Batman across the years

Batman is a character with a long history and career. The flavor of the character has changed over the years from grim to goofy and back to grim. He is at times a detective, at times a superhero and at times a science fiction hero. This book, "The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told" does an admirable job of pulling the best of each incarnation of Batman and presenting them in a single volume. Each story is a well-chosen and enjoyable read.
Bob Kane, Bill Finger, Dick Sprang, Neal Adams, Steve Englehart, Marshall Rogers are Dick Giordano are all represented. Each of these creators touched Batman in a permanent way. Noticeably absent are Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One) and Alan Moore/Brian Bolland (The Killing Joke). In the introduction, it is stated that these famous Batman creators are well-represented in other reprint collections and thus were not included in this volume. It is nice to know that they were acknowledged.
Those who were introduced to Batman by the movies and the accompanying 90's rebirth may be disappointed by this volume. It does cover the Batman character as a whole, and not only one phase (Grim and Gritty). Also, the Joker has a companion volume, "The Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told," so there are few Joker stories included.

Sad, but very interesting

I read this book in one night. I really liked it. I still cannot imagine doing to myself what Kessa did to herself. It's not an act to get attention, it's a real disease. Anyone who has it really needs help. I think that Kessa had a lot of courage. There was no way I could have stayed awake during the chest tube procedure. It was so graphic that I almost fainted. This author is very talented. He really gives an insight into the minds of these young girls.
