Sad, but very interesting

I read this book in one night. I really liked it. I still cannot imagine doing to myself what Kessa did to herself. It's not an act to get attention, it's a real disease. Anyone who has it really needs help. I think that Kessa had a lot of courage. There was no way I could have stayed awake during the chest tube procedure. It was so graphic that I almost fainted. This author is very talented. He really gives an insight into the minds of these young girls.

MORE THAN A WESTERN ROMANCE

Of more interest than the romance between burr and johanna, is the why of this book. Johanna takes this job in the west because her family was brutally murdered and her sister Jacy was raped and is pregnant. She leaves for the west hoping to find peace and health for the now mute Jacy. But Jacy is a stepsister and is half mexican.Johanna's new employer hates mexicans although through his unwanted and forced attentions on the peasant women he himself has half mexican offspring. His 2 (...) sons have worked hard and gone through much hardship for the Macklin spread despite their nasty biological father. Jacy finds healing in the compassion of the western folk and especially the understanding and love of the macklin son, luis, who will protect her at all costs even if it's with his silver pistols. Eventually Burr and johanna come to care for each other. And what of the nasty old man, mack macklin? And what about the little blue eyed boy that burr saved from the indians? Lots of hurt and lots of healing is brought to macklin land with johanna and jacy's arrival.

I read so many books that I have difficulty remembering many of them. A lot of Garlock's books are similar to the others that she writes, but I like books about country life and not too much about city.

Another masterpiece from Ms. Garlock

Johanna and Burr's characters set off sparks from beginning to end. Burr resents Johanna arriving at the ranch, and takes his frustrations out about his father, by being cruel to her... to the point that he hopes to drive her away. Only he must fight his attraction to the golden-haired woman, that her father brought to the ranch to marry his son... even though Johanna was under the impression it was to only act as housekeeper on the ranch. This tale is full of unpredictable twists and turns, that will keep you reading until you get to the last word. I loved this story, and am anxious to read more of Ms. Garlock's books.

The Movie ending is better....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other day I stumbled into "A Patch of Blue " on TV. I couldn't stop watching it, and I rarely head for a tear-jerker. I was so impressed with the film, I had to read the book. The movie adaptation was right on the money, with a different ending. Usually changes in a book's origional ending spell doom, but this movie is a switch! The last chapter of the book is a wreck, almost like it was written by someone else. The author's attempt at a delusional Selena departs from the narration into a suddenly florid language, full of insight, with a vocab that she does not use with this character throughout the whole book. I reread the ending 3 times, and still had trouble establishing the imagery in my mind. And what a time to break down...right at the time when the only person who has helped you in your whole life needs your help. For God's sake..."Open your mouth Selina or Sleena...whatever"! Without, giving the ending away, to say the least....what a let down!!! Watch the movie. While not as sappy as a Disney ending, it still ties things up and lets Rose-ane get hers !!!

A window into another way of life

I read this book for my high school English class. After i had procrastinated the reading until the very last weekend of the assignment, i finally settled into the book. Fortunately, it was easy, fast reading. I felt the book was intrigueing and captivating from the very first page until the end. The story is a first person narrative of a strong, young blind girl's life. She has been terribly neglected, having been blinded as a child by her own prostitute mother. She knows only of her one room apartment, and what she's listened to on the radio. In the book, she finally has the oppurtunity to go outside of her dingy apartment. She meets a friend in the park, and discovers what friendship and love is. She realises what a sorry life she's been forced to live through her blindness. The story was beautiful, touching, and honest. The theme of the book was of tolerence. It must have been set in the 1950s or 1960s, and so the plot emphasises the prejudice between blacks and whites, rich and poor. I do feel that i missed much of the suspense of the plot because the cover of the book i used gave away a key to the story. I did not like the bluntness of the books ending. I felt that many conflicts had not been resolved, however, it was realistic. I think this is a story you should expose yourself to.

Feels like a brick!!!

That's an interesting book because it offers you a real close idea about who Andy Warhol was and how he went about his daily routine. You gotta have patience because it can get boring at times. Too much unnecessary information ( like how much he paid for the taxi on his way home ) some would say, but then again, if you are a fan of Warhol and his way of thinking, many parts of the book will just make you laugh!It's 800 pages long!

I've Been "Glued" for Weeks!

"Went home lonely and despondent because nobody loves me and it's Easter, and I cried." [4-17-81] When I reached that line in the diaries, I think I truly fell in love with Andy. He was a total observer of life and pierced a depth of feeling in his aloneness. He seemed to be a walking nerve and picked up every nuance of life and all the personalities surrounding him.

His observations about people were uncanny - and he was like a prophet in many ways, even at one point predicting his own death! He knew things about people that they probably didn't know about themselves.

For instance his glib comment after the death of Elvis Presley in 1977, "They're saying that the article Caroline Kennedy did on the Elvis funeral for Rolling Stone made fun of the local people, but I can understand that--Caroline's really intelligent and the people down there really were dumb. Elvis never knew there were more interesting people" [8-30-77] - honing in on exactly what killed Elvis!

Or when he mentioned Michael Jackson's penchant for young boys - and that was 1984!

His diaries are so revealing and so easy to read and he really makes us understand all the modes of the counterculture that revolved around his life - the music, the artists, the movie stars... and how self-absorbed they all were. And how caught up in drugs and drink some of them became.

Although Andy was obviously anorexic and somewhat alcoholic (he hated to drink yet it seemed he drank almost every day) he was constantly trying to improve himself and he wrestled with his physical self and all his insecurities every day of his life. Yet he was of strong mind and his beliefs were never swayed. And he wasn't afraid to make his feelings and opinions known. Yet his life was always overshadowed by his fear of death and disease. And he was insecure about his looks, yet managed to start a modeling career in his early '50s!

He was such a 'cat'! "There was a party at the Statue of Liberty, but I'd already read publicity of me going to it so I felt it was done already." [7-5-83] He invented his own language and way of communicating, which was very colourful and made every moment interesting. His diaries are a sensual feast; he lived life to its fullest and was able to describe all the flavors of the food and drink, the odors and scents of people and places, in such a way that the reader feels as though he/she is reliving it all.

What impressed me most about Andy was his great discipline and ability to admit to his own shortcomings. He got up every day and went to work like it was a nine-to-five job, went to church every Sunday, and stayed in tune with all that was going on in the world around him. If Andy were alive today, he'd love the Internet, e-mail and cell phones. For he was a man about the world, truly in love with life and all that it has to offer.

I just wished the diaries included an index.

Warhol's catty, gossipy diary of the late seventies and eighties

I bet that Warhol's celebrity friends regretted ever having invited him to one of their parties after this was published. Warhol gossips about every celebrity who ever was a part of the New York scene in the '70's - 80's. That was the period when he hung out with Liza Minelli, Halston, and Steve Rubell of Studio 54 fame. It was a whirlwind of endless parties. Warhol comes across as a shallow, superficial, moneygrubbing creep who had run out of good art ideas years before in the early sixties and who was living (and dining out and drinking) off his fame. Anyone who thinks that Warhol's art had any profound significance is in for a big disappointment because this diary reveals that Warhol couldn't be profound about anything: all he cares about is money and celebrities. What he was, though, was clever - at times. What he had was a great eye for color and graphics - which is why his early work holds up so well.
Occasionally, Warhol comes across as a sad little figure: he is sincerely bewildered and perplexed and terrified by life. He was incapable of deep thinking. At other times, Warhol comes across as unsavory, cold, grasping, a user of people. Once in a while, I have to give him a hand for achieving so much success despite so many obstacles. If it wasn't for his artistic talent, Warhol would have been selling women's shoes in some Manhattan store. I know a lot more about Warhol than before reading his diaries but I do not like him more because of it.
Warhol's diaries were interesting enough for me to finish. There's enough gossip and catty put-downs here to make it a page turner.

If I could only have one volume of Moorcock in my library, I do believe that this would be it. I have heard this exquisite fantasy compared with Peake's Ghormanghast- except that an American will find Gloriana actually readable and enjoyable.
I can't think of a richer fantasy world encompased in a single self-sufficient novel. And while it is fantasy, it is not sugar-sweet and naive, it is fantasy most worldly and sophisticated. This global Elizabethan empire is quite convincingly atmospheric, as is London and the great palace itself. You want it to exist, hell, you want to go there.
You would not hesitate to pledge fealty to Gloriana the First, Queen of Albion, Empress of Asia and Virginia. You want to believe in the ideal she represents, in a world that would otherwise redescend into darkness and madness....

This is the best thesaurus I have ever seen. It provides lots of synonyms for more common words, and provides cross-references for less common words. I use it in all my writings.

I purchased this book and it was the biggest mistake I ever made, so many everyday words are missing. We have a rule in our house you have to know how to spell a word and the meaning of it and this thesaurus was of no help to anyone. I was sorry I purchased it.

Webster's New World Thesaurus / 0-452-00742-9

I bought this thesaurus from a second-hand bookstore several years back and I have nothing but praise for it. This thesaurus is very good at providing a moderate (not too many, not too few) selection of strongly-associated synonyms for each word, and I find that the offered selections are usually precisely what I want and need.

If you still need a paper thesaurus in this day and age, I strongly recommend this one if you can find it cheaply.
