Pity it can't be true...

This book purports to be a true account of a British WWI ace's postwar adventures -- but despite a few years of effort I have been unable to turn up the name of William Bede O'Malley on any list of British WWI aces - which often include pilots with lower scores than the 32 victories O'Malley is said to have had. The same is true regarding Conrad von Kern and the German lists.

I am forced to conclude that, alas, it is all fiction. Of course, I realize this sort of thing is an age-old literary device, but I was hoping that there was at least a grain of truth behind it all.

It's still a great story though.

A fun read.

I will look up more of Jon Cleary's work. A suprisingly well written book from a technical viewpoint, spoiled in comparison to the movie only by the lack of some of the best aerial photography I have ever seen.

A much deeper story line than the movie (suprise), with an interesting parallel view of events seen from several viewpoints. Even the quasi-bad guy comes off as a tragically flawed but understandable character.

A fine little read I recommend highly.

Great book

This is unreservedly one of my favorite books. I first read it when it came out many moons ago and liked it a lot. I saw the Tom Selleck movie and like it, too, though it is very different from the book.

But rereading it was a joy. I so wish that more books of this kind were written today. I defy you to read the story and not get choked up at the end. This is a book you're sorry when it ends.

I'm glad i t was released as an e-book so I read it every year, or so now.

A visual extravaganza down the yellow brick road!

I was excited when I heard this book was in the works, and am now thoroughly pleased and thrilled to see its results! This book is magnificient; such a fresh, original way to pay tribute to MGM's classic 1939 film. The 3-D elements of this book really allows the reader to interact with it. A terrific job by both the authors and folks at Intervisual Books.
One might think that the book is lacking something with only ten pages, but that is NOT the case. Each turn of the page is jam packed with beautiful imagery from "The Wizard of Oz". This includes exquisitely designed mechanical pop-ups, gatefolds, and mini-windows to open up with plenty of pictures of our favorite Oz characters and scenes. Also, the authors did a fine job in retelling the classic movie with a simple, elegant writing style.
From the moment you open the book you get to experience the imagery of Oz leap off the pages right before your very eyes. Get whisked away from Kansas with a 3-D tornado and watch the Wicked Witch melt. You can almost feel the wind against your face and hear the cackle of the old crone as she meets her demise.
Another fun and fine point about this book is the 'extra' CD which accompanies it. The author's claim it will let you 'click your heels to the beat'. Well, don't be surprised if your feet are marching to the beat. And, if it weren't for having to hold the book in your hands, you'd probably be slapping your knees, too!!
This is another exceptional Oz contribution from Jay Scarfone and William Stillman. They've pretty much covered it all ... historical research, collectibles treasury, and now a trip down the lighter side of the yellow brick road with a visually extravagant three-dimensional edition of MGM's classic movie. This book will be a classic in its own right. I highly recommend everyone buy two copies; one to 'play' with and one to keep!

Pop goes the Tin Man!

A sepia tornado hurls Dorothy's house out at you. Turn the page and the glorious color of Oz comes to life as Glinda hovers over Dorothy. Out of the many illustrated pop-up Oz books, this one is done with actual photos from our beloved movie! The book even creeks as Dorothy renders aid to the Tin Man. 11 pop-outs (6 of them are hidden in the side flaps) makes the reader part of the movie while turning the moving pages and lifting the flaps to discover all the familiar things we've grown to love. Just imagine melting the Wicked Witch at your will with only your fingertips. And if that's not enough, pop the CD out of it's pocket and into your player and listen to Judy Garland sing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Besides being a warm memento of the movie, this book is FUN!! Check out another Oz-some book by William Stillman and Jay Scarfone "The Wizardry Of OZ", they make great companion pieces.

A glorious look at the wonderful movie of "The Wizard of Oz"

Since this is "The Wizard of Oz: The Official 50th Anniversary Pictorial History" of the beloved 1939 film, it is not surprising that John Fricke, Jay Scarfone, and William Stillman have put together the book that tops the "must have" list for fans of the film (after, of course, L. Frank Baum's original novel, which just had its centennial edition come out in 1903. After an introduction by Jack Haley, Jr., the volume's prologue, "The Marvelous Land of Oz," begins with the story of how Baum came up with the name for Oz and looks at the history of his stories prior to the movie. Also included in this prologue are stills from some of the vaudeville and silent movie versions (the 1925 film had Oliver Hardy as the Tin Woodman), the original book covers for the 42 Oz stories, and Technicolor test shots of the movie cast, which includes Judy Garland wearing a blond wig as Dorothy. By the time you finish this prologue you will know that this book is going to be everything that you would want as the table of contents indicates:

Part One - The Oz Diary: Creating a Classic: (1) Acquisition and Casting contrasts the signing of the cast with W.W. Denslow's first pictures of the characters; (2) Scripts, Songs, and Staff focuses on early drafts of the scripts and ideas for song more so than what actually ended up in the movie; (3) Wardrobe and Markup details the evolution of the look of each character with corresponding photographs; (4) The Thorpe "Era" is about Richard Thorpe's short tenure as the film's director, when Gale Sondergaard is the Wicked Witch and Dorothy is a blond; (5) There'll Be Some Changes Made is short but sweet and is about the changes George Cukor made as a stop gap under Victor Fleming was signed to direct the film; (6) "The Wizard" Comes to Life is a lengthy chapter covering the making of the film with its various legendary stories; and (7) Post-Production and Previews, which details what was cut (including "Over the Rainbow" at one point), when and why.

Part Two - The Oz Diary Continued: Promotion and Reception: (8) The Oz Campaign contains everything from Judy Garland telling Frank Morgan "Anybody can be a wizard at Jelly-Making" for a newspaper ad for Certo (never heard of it either)to a two-page full-color spread in "Life" and a special "Wizard of Oz" ad for the Sunday comics; (9) Hollywood Party is about the movie's gala premier; (10) "Capitol" Times in Manhattan is about the show at Loew's Capitol Theater In New York City that showed the movie along with a life performances by Garland and Mickey Rooney. This chapter also shows some of the first product tie-ins for the movie; and (11) From Coast to Coast is a brief look at promotion of the film across the nation and includes what might be the first editorial cartoon that used the Oz characters to comment on a real situation (Hitler is the Wicked Witch of the West and Mussolini is a winged monkey, while Dorothy is European civilization, the Scarecrow is Poland, the Lion is Britain, and the Tin Woodman is France).

Part Three - Raves and Accolades looks at (12) The Reviews, which includes a look at foreign books and domestic record versions; and (13) The Twelfth Annual Academy Awards, where the film won Best Song for "Over the Rainbow," Best Original Score for Herbert Stothart's underscoring and adaptation of the Arlen/Harburg songs, and Garland for best performance of a juvenile during the past year.

Part Four - Oz and Ends, includes brief looks at (14) Original Ozzy Merchandising; (15) Oz Abroad; and (16) Theatrical Reissue.

Part Five - Television Perennial covers how most of us first saw the movie, including (17) Guest Hosts on CBS (I always liked Dick Van Dyke); and (18) NBC Interlude/CBS Comeback.

Part Six - The Legend is another set of brief chapters on (19) Reunions and Reminiscences; (20) Merchandising; and (21) Icon, which ends the book on a perfect grade note with editorial cartoons on the death of Garland in 1959, Jack Haley in 1979, Margaret Hamilton in 1985, and Ray Bolger in 1987.

This volume includes more than 400 illustrations, half in color and many never before published, including over seventy makeup and costume portraits, behind-the-scenes and production photos, and not only stills but script pages from the musical numbers and segments that were filmed but cut from the release print (including "The Jitterbug," Bolger's extended solo dance to "If I Only Had a Brain," and the "triumphal return" sequence). The photographs of all the movie posters, toys, and other items associated with "The Wizard of Oz" can be found throughout the book instead of being collected all at the end of the book corresponding with when the movie came out. The last three parts could essentially be individual chapters to avoid the sense that you are racing through the end of the volume, but that is a minor complaint all things considered.

As relevant as ever before.

Great political commentary from Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. His introspection of the 68' election carries a stong resonance to the political climate we find ourselves in today. Thompson's journalistic voice is a breath of fresh in a field which far to often today finds itself printing what sells copies rather than truth. One can wish Thompson were still around today to provide his unique insight on the 2016 election and the monster than is Donald Trump.

Gonzo at its best

I read this book as an appetizer for the current US presidential election campaign. And what an appetizer it is - akin to a halopenio shrimp cocktail with mescalin! It would have been an even better starter for the 2004 election, with which the 1972 election (featured here) shared many features: An incumbent hated by all the progressives at home and everybody in the rest of the world, an opponent who stands for nothing but not being that incumbent (defeated in the primaries in 72) and a murderous, immoral and expensive war on the other side of the world, which nevertheless didn't cost the US president his job.

When the great HST covers the 1972 campaign, the verb "cover" takes on a whole new meaning. He immerses himself in the broadcast of a pro football game in order to adopt the same mindset as pro football fanatic Richard Nixon. He almost drowns in the Atlantic ocean in Miami in sight of his friends at a democratic primary-night party. At the republican convention, he joins the young republicans and talks to them about acid (they think he is referring to proton donors, like hydrochloric acid). Not despite, but rather because of this famous "gonzo" style of journalism, HST's book is rich in insight about US politics and politics in general. He goes so much further than the horse-race type coverage commonly fed to the public. Thompson provides an intelligent assessment of the moods and trends in the US population and a really smart analysis of why people vote for whom. He has excellent insight into the dynamics of the individual campaigns and how they are molded by the characters and agendas of the candidates, the interactions with their campaign workers and their relations to the party apparatus. HST doesn't think of elections as some kind of stunt happening every couple of years, but he explains them as deeply interwoven with the social and demographic workings of the USA.

Some of my most favorite political quotes are from this book. Thompson really loves his country, he says "it could have been a testament to some of man's best instincts", but he is in despair over the crocks (Nixon and cronies) who have taken it hostage. This emotional state of his and the worry about the direction the US will take in '72 got him to write an intense and fiery book.

Do yourself a favor - stop following the electoral coverage on the corporate media for a week, use your time to read this book, and then go back to the current campaign and you will view it in a new light.

Gonzo journalism at its twisted zenith.

Anyone wishing to truly understand the Age of Nixon should have three books in their collection: The Final Days by Woodward 7 Bernstein; The Arrogance of Power: The Secret World of Richard Nixon by Anthony Summers; and Fear & Loathing: On The Campaign Trail '72.
True, in this book Thompson focuses most of his attention and energy on the Democratic primary -- but that primary season was irrevocably shaped by Nixonian politics, and, in any event, Thompson did, surprisingly, manage to spend some time with the Nixon campaign.
F&L:OTCPT'72 provides a jaggedly sharp view of the inner workings of four Democratic campaigns: the primary efforts of Ed Muskie and George Wallas as well as McGovern's equally ill-starred primary and general campaigns. Thompson's writing is remarkably unclouded; he writes as he saw things, holding back no details and pulling no punches. Would that political reporting were always so uncritical and focused!
Of course, as with any Thompson book, this one is not without its moments of gut-busting laughter. The Doktor's savage daydream about convention delegate vote-brokering as well as a episode involving the "Boo-Hoo" -- a drunken maniac who harrassed Senator Ed Muskie during a whistlestop campaign tour of Florida -- are priceless moments of humor.
Thompson was never quite as crazed as he was in this book. Even in "Hell's Angels", Thompson was more of a reporter than a participant in the action. For this reason, F&L:OTCPT'72 is truly Gonzo Journalism at its peak.

A Classic Cookbook on Poultry

This cookbook is rich with classic poultry recipes. They are the recipes that I grew up with put forward in a simple, no-nonsense approach. This is not a coffee table type book as there are no pictures other than some simple hand-drawings. This is for the serious cook – those who are just beginning as well as those who have years of experience behind them. The original version of this book was released in 1944 and it has undergone many changes in the various updates since then. Reading the forewards to the book give the reader its history and funny anecdotes.

In looking through the recipes, I was struck by the thought that something “old” is “new” again. We have gotten so fancy in our ingredients and our cooking methods that some of the recipes of the past have gotten lost because of their simplicity. These are special meals that are easy to master once you master a few techniques. The chapter on sauces is especially useful – simple bechamel, hollandaise, sauce bernaise, and fresh mayonnaise – they are all described and are used elsewhere in the book.

I loved the herb mixtures that are used. While I like a chili pepper in the proper recipe, so many recipes now contain some form of a chili pepper (dried, smoked, fresh, ground, etc.) that it makes it difficult for the herbs to have their voice. It is wonderful to see tarragon used – it is an herb that seems to be getting lost and yet it has such a wonderful flavor.

The vast majority of the book is devoted to chicken – which makes sense. It is the poultry that is most readily recognized and purchased in the local grocery. There are chapters on turkey, duck, and then a variety of interesting other poultry for the more adventuresome cook. I was extremely interested in the duck recipes as I have recently acquired a taste for it and wanted to try some new (to me) recipes. I have also wanted to learn how to cook goose and was pleased to find a chapter on that bird.

The chicken recipes are where we see the vast technique of cooking used. From simple chicken salad to deviled squab chicken with bernaise to chicken livers – there are recipes for so many fairly easy to make dishes with easily found ingredients. I immediately made the poached chicken with dumplings using Nellie Cox's recipe for dumplings as well as chicken legs with yogurt. Both were delightful to make and even more wonderful to eat.

In looking through the book, I only came across one item that was not included – and it is really a side dish more than a poultry dish. In the chapter on stuffings, I could not find one that used corn bread. As I have my own, it was not a huge loss, but too bad we did not get Mr. Beard's take on it. That is a small omission when compared to the vast array of what is included.

I loved this version of the cookbook and look forward to using it for years to come. I will certainly be purchasing my own copy of the cookbook as it is one that I think should be a staple in a serious cook's kitchen.

What? No grouse?

I opened this book, scanned the TOC and said, "Where are the grouse?"

Well it turns out that the original book, published in 1944 as Fowl and Game Cookery, included grouse, along with "squirrel, possum, raccoon, skunk and other four-footed game". Grouse and game were dropped for the 1979 edition because they were no longer readily available.

So here we come to the problem of reissuing older cookbooks. Do you copy the original book or update it? I bought a book not too long ago that was about a famous food writer in the post-WW2 period. The recipes had been updated by a young chef whose mother was only a twinkle when the recipes were written. The update was ridiculous and totally unneeded. Anyone who does not know that people cooked differently back then is woefully uninformed.

Here the revisions are not so heavy handed. Beard himself made the first changes in 1979, dropping the mammals and increasing the number of chicken and turkey recipes. The grouse flew away then.

This Open Road edition seems to be from 1999 and I am not sure that it, of all the editions, is the one I would have chosen. In 1999 few people had access to the wealth of hand-reared birds we have today. I am also put off by the 1999 editor's note that butter and cream had been reduced. Phooey on that. I think the 1999 edition was chosen because it has an intro by Julia Child. Younger readers who might not know James Beard will be attracted by the mention of Julia Child. I would rather read about the skunk.

This is not a modern cookbook. It is not chatty. It is not full of recipes from exotic places. It is not bloated with big pictures. Recipes, ma'am, just recipes. Recipes for excellent food in the style of a bygone era of American fine cooking.

Timeless and Comprehenisve Look at Poultry and Game Fowl Cooking

I first read 'Beard on Birds' in its 1944 version: 'Fowl and Game Cookery.' Be assured that this is not an outdated book. The recipes are timeless classics for one thing. They include offerings from both the regional and the ethnic areas of American cuisine. In 1999, all of the recipes in this expanded version were professionally reviewed and the amount of butter, cream and salt in them were revised as appropriate. (Beard, a man both tall and wide, was notoriously a butter lover and ate and wrote a rich diet.)

Without a doubt, this book is most essential to lovers of chicken who are always looking for a new way with their favorite fowl. This section probably takes up one-third of the pages. Equally, those needing a complete refresher each holiday for how to do a turkey dinner will welcome the turkey chapter in the book. These chapters include many recipes for soups, meaty salads, sandwiches and casseroles to use up leftovers in interesting ways. Fewer cooks will delve into the chapters on duck, pheasant, squab, pigeon, quail and partridge, or snipe and woodcock...but then, there are fewer recipes for preparing them and they will be of interest to wildfowl hunters. Final sections of the book present classic sauces and stuffing/dressing recipes and a few accompaniments.

Beard did not head a restaurant kitchen: he was one of the foremost food writers and demonstrators of his time. He was a well-to-do man who was very much at home in the kitchen and who ate well whether he dined in or out. In food circles, he was known as 'a living encyclopedia of culinary lore and history. He was an inveterate seeker for recipes in the American culinary tradition and he employed a professional staff to test the recipes and to organize his researches and writing into cookbooks. This compendium represents his most comprehensive treatment on poultry.
