Decent Tool for Students

I picked up SUPER READING SECRETS because I was and am still interested in learning as much as I possibly can. Being able to increase my reading speed would allow me to read more books than I can now and in turn I would learn more information. After reading the book, I do know how to increase my reading speed. The techniques that Berg suggests in SUPER READING SECRETS really do work, however, they are not something I intend to do frequently. I like reading. Even when studying, I take pleasure from most things I read. For me, there really isn't much distinction between reading for pleasure and reading for information and reading for studying. Just about everything I read is for pleasure. Most of the techniques that are suggested in the book are directed towards reading for information and reading for study.

Besides the speeding reading tips, the book is also full of useful study techniques and tips. If I was still a student in high school or college and had never discovered these tips and techniques on my own, then I would have found these parts of the book to be quite useful. However, since I already knew about these techniques I didn't get much out of these parts of the book either.

True to the title, SUPER READING SECRETS really does explain how a person can learn how to read one-page in three seconds. It takes time, but it does work. Students who have trouble studying from high school and college will get the most from this book. However, if you're someone like me who likes to read (even most textbooks) for pleasure, then you probably won't gain much from reading this book.

Good studying guide almost fullfills promise

Mr Berg book is an interesting approach to not so much speed reading than strategic reading, or rather culling, of information. Although there are speed-reading technniques per se that are well-explained in his tome, a lot of the material covered deals with planning so that you can "speed-scan" the book. He, as well, spends some pages on allied disciplines that are useful studying adjuncts. Mnemonics, memory rhythm manipulation, the use of music as recall device are summurily explored. The extensive bibliography that he provides will allow to explore these avenues further if you are so inclined. The book is a softer sell than the infomercials. Interestingly, Mr Stern does admit to some slight chicanery in his public demos...
Although it will increase your reading speed, do not expect results in the range that Mr Berg claims... as he is not really reading each and every word on the page. The book is just an okay buy in terms of content but it is so cheap that if one is interested one should buy it.

Compact & useful training guidelines

i read this book and immediately applied the techniques into practice - the result is that you don't really can remember everything you read, but you learn an efficient method how to see the essential information in the text. the book does not waste time on providing reading examples (when it does, the appendix does not contain it), but gives you on-hand instructions to learn the technique. In my experience, you don't have to follow them exactly, e.g. i didn't tape the time intervals for the exercises. the most important is that you practice - whatever exercise it is - on a regular basis. However, the book often repeats itself, one exercise was almost the same as the previous. also, you don't learn too much more specific scientific background information.

A gothic, macabre tale involving revenge, redemption, folk medicine, and magic, The Little Giantgarnered ample praise from critics, who were perhaps surprised that the story of a gargantuan woman captivated them so thoroughly. Although the first part, which focuses on the relationship between Truly and Serena Jane, contains elements of melodrama, it allows Baker to explore the contrast between all kinds of beauty and ugliness. Baker moves on to explore issues such as family, betrayal, love, and friendship (her attempts to tackle topics such as euthanasia, rape, and sexual orientation fall a little flat). A few critics also faulted Trudy's unrealistic first-person but omniscient narration, but this was a minor complaint in a compelling, emotional, and intelligent novel from an author to watch.

By the time Truly was born, she had already been big news. Truly's mother died giving born to Truly that it was speculated that Truly killed her mother. Dr. Morgan said Truly's size was a new record. Truly and her older sister, Serena Jane are complete opposites. Truly is a big gal, that when she was growing up she had to wear boy's clothing; where as her sister, Serena Jane looked like a china doll with her blond hair and petite frame. Truly turned out to be the star of Aberdeen but not the kind of star anyone wants to be. While Truly tries to get by day by day; her sister Serena Jane has caught the attention of Dr. Morgan's son, Robert. Robert thinks Serena Jane s the most beautiful woman he has ever seen and he wants her for his own. He will do anything to keep her.

The Little Giant of Aberdeen County is a charming, endearing read. In my opinion Truly was the prettier of the two sisters. Truly is beautiful both on the inside as well as the outside. She had a big heart that reached everyone; no matter whether they liked her or not. Serena Jane could have sided with the rest of the town and rejected her sister but she loved her sister and it showed in the end. Tiffany Baker shows just how talented she is with her debut novel The Little Giant of Aberdeen County. Tiffany has just gained a fan in me.

Needs more work and could have been better

Tiffany Baker's The Little Giant of Aberdeen County is well written and Ms. Baker has a creative way of expressing herself as well as considerable command of the English language. However there are some weaknesses to the work that bear mentioning. There were so many references to Truly's giant size that eventually the reader gets tired of hearing how large Truly is. There are holes in the plot that make much of the book unrealistic. I think Ms. Baker should have spent just a bit more time editing and re-writing so that the plot holes were taken care of and resolved. Likewise, there are parts of the book that are too obvious, such as where Tabatha had hidden her book of spells and cures. Many characters were given too short a treatment in terms of character development. Many of the men were stereotypical and seemed to lack realism. Often we are told too much by Ms. Baker and she could have actually produced a stronger book had she said less rather than said more. A good example of this is the conversations Dr. Robert Morgan has with law enforcement and the coroner about notifying him whenever an unknown woman's body was located. We could have used a bit more mystery here. There were very few if any surprises in the novel, it was a just a bit too predictable. I did think there was some dark somber humor hidden in the book, especially in the odd characters of the school teacher and the preacher's wife, both of whom were hateful creatures. I wish I could say more positive aspects of the novel but Ms. Baker should have spent just a bit more time re-writing this novel. As it now stands, it is a bit too amateurish.

What were Gruen and Kallos thinking?

I read The Little Giant of Aberdeen County because it came with blurbs from Sara Gruen and Stephanie Kallos, both of whom have written books I admired. Well, Gruen and Kallos may be excellent writers of fiction, but they're apparently not so hot as judges of other writers' fiction, because Little Giant doesn't belong on the same shelf with Water for Elephants, Broken for You, and Sing Them Home.

For one thing, many of the characters in Little Giant are almost cartoonishly unbelievable. I'm prepared to believe that a child who has the misfortune to be born with gigantism in a small town in upstate New York would be teased mercilessly by all the other children in the town, and that many of the adults in the community would behave in an uncaring way toward her. But I find it hard to believe that virtually all of the adults in the town -- including the doctor, the schoolteacher, and the minister's wife -- would be so repulsed by the child's appearance that they would be not just uncaring, but almost pathologically hostile to her.

For another thing, the book is badly written, with breathtakingly banal observations about life (which the author seems to think are original and profound) appearing on almost every page. The author's most annoying stylistic tic is her tendency to make up extremely strained metaphors (or, as she would probably describe them, metaphors as strained as a weak teabag). By the time I got to "Truth is like a blunt hoe", near the end of the book, I wished I had a blunt hoe to attack the book with. Where was the editor who could have nipped this metaphor-mania in the bud, like a gardener with a pair of secateurs? (Oh, no -- now she's got me doing it, too!)

What our Industry Needs

I work for a remodeling contractor and POS is definitely what my industry needs more of. Mr. Gross does an excellent job of showing the need for POS and then giving examples of how it has been used in other companies to boost sales and compete with larger and more sophisticated competitors. A must read for any small business owner.

A must-have in every business owner's toolkit

If more people read and implemented outstanding service, then we wouldn't be having all those 'siteAsucks.com' and 'siteBsucks.com' web sites.
This book targets the lifeline of any business - your customers -and talks about common sense - how to make them happy - so that they not only come back, but they also tell others!
The concept is very simple. But this is probably the only book I have ever found about delivering "outrageous" service.
I have myself implemented (long before reading this book, of course :-) what I call as "Not Technical Support - But FANATIC'nical Support" on my own site at WebmasterInABox.net
So, it was exciting to see an entire book dedicated to this topic. And in spite of knowing what brilliant customer service is, I had managed to brainstorm about 200 different ideas to provide "outrageous" service, before I had delved even 20 pages into the book.
A great buy. On my top 10 list.

Positively Full of Fluff

This book has about 2 good ideas in it. The rest is just boring fluff. He repeats things over and over to fill pages apparently.
Also I took offense at the author casting all non-extroverts as lazy, no good, welfare recipient, so and so's. As if only extroverted personalities can provide good service to customers. His predjudiced view of introverts leads me to believe that this guy is [not smart]. I mean does he really think that only extroverts can give good customer service? Duh...
He owns a restaurant, so what. He didn't write much about any actual EXAMPLES of Positively Outrageous Services, he mainly just talks about them generally. Which is dumb when he could have been filling those pages with ideas for us business owners who don't happen to own restaurants.
Insulting all reserved people was not "P.O.S." if you as me.

Mixed Feelings...

First of all let me say that as someone who reads a lot, I can honestly say I've never come across a book that was less what I expected then this.

Plot Summery:

In the world there are demon like creatures called fiends, and there are magekind who try to capture and harness their power. Nikodemus is an ancient fiend who is trying to kill the mage Magellan (could we find more ridiculous names if we tried?). Carson is a witch who has spent the better part of her life under Magellan's psychological control. While she and Nikodemus ought to be sworn enemies, they instead become allies and lovers.

Things I Liked:

Some parts of this were actually sort of funny, sort of sexy, sort of entertaining. There are some decent ideas here, though they are never fully developed or explained. Nikodemus is actually a pretty interesting, rough around the edges character.

The Problems:

Writing style--or rather the lack of style. There are typos, big obvious ones. There are problems where dialogue is thrown in between unrelated descriptive sentences. The diction and syntax is just really rough, so the whole thing doesn't flow at all. You really have to concentrate to keep up with what's going on.

Plot holes--serious, gaping, plot holes. I still have absolutely no clue what the purpose or origin of the mages is. What they do with their magic or how it works or why they need it. To be fair there is some explanation but it's very vague, almost like the author couldn't be bothered to throw in some background. And those aren't the only questions left unanswered.

General content***Minor Spoilers Ahead***Shock value does not always equal entertainment. You have some really crude, not in the least bit romantic sex, followed by a three-way that comes out of left field. I don't have a problem with crude language or multiple partners, when it fits the context. In this case it doesn't. It's just kind of there, like all the other poorly strung together plot points. Plus, the characters are underdeveloped, and the relationship is half-baked.

I honestly can't say I'd recommend this to anyone as a romance. Possibly as erotica, but then you have to ignore the other long winded content.

Imaginative Series

Carolyn Jewel creates a new series with My Wicked Enemy. I have to admit the back of the book and the title made me feel like this book was just going to be alright and lost in the paranormal romance series. I was wrong. Jewel creates two characters that are unlike the typical hero and heroine.

Nikodemus is an old as dirt Fiend who swears, curses, and wants to kill Carson and Magellan. You have to understand in this series Mages/Witches/Magekind are bad news. They enslave Fiends and take away their good will. It's a war of good and evil, except everyone's in the grey a little. Carson is a witch who's been locked away from her power and now can't `pull' magic. So she's useless as anything but a battery to other Magekind and harmless to Fiends.

Carson witnesses a murder at Magellan's house and her innocent naivety comes crashing down. She runs away and straight into Nikodemus who swears she's on his to-do list today, fourth one down, "Kill Magellan's Witch.

Carson's character is filled with flaws physically and psychically. Through the entire book the reader is rooting for her survival and hoping she can come out on top. Nikodemus' character is definitely old-fashion good, but it takes the entire book before they actually get together. All around the plot is new and different then you're average vampire/werewolf romance and I'm looking forward to the next book. I hope she blows this series up big and expands on the Fiends who have already been introduced.

Put Carson and Nikodemus on your to-do list!

Too Many Holes...

I picked this book up on a whim... The cover got to me, and I wanted to read lighter than "Breaking Dawn" and "Acheron". This proved to be worthy.

Now, I read the book, and I have to say, the characters were there. The plot was there. The fight scenes, the danger, everything that we come to look for in a PR was there... except for Clarity and Closure.

Let me explain...

We meet Nikodemus and he wants to kill Magellan and Carson. All we're told is that it's because Mages are evil and they enslaves Fiends. There's no real motive. I would have enjoyed that.

I've also read another review that touched on the love scenes in the book. On that point, I'll say that crude talk in the middle of sex is something that I would fully expect from Nikodemus. What I DIDN'T like was how Carson was put into an Anita Blake position and had sex with Iskander. I wouldn't think that she would have put up with something like that, nor would I have expected Nikodemus to just stand by and watch.

As a reader, I expect reasons for the changes of character. And I'm talking aside from "We're Fiends, that's what we do." (Yes, that is actually said in the book). And with no CLEAR explainations of what was going on with Carson and the others... with SO many questions left about Characters that are important (you'll see them in one scene, and then never hear about them in the end)... I can't give this book the glowing praise a plot like this deserves. There are just too many holes for my liking.

The best of the worst!

I am a sci-fi "B" movie fanatic. This is a great listing of some of the best of the worst films. There is a Plot Summary, Immortal Dialogue and Critic Reviews for each movie. There is quite a bit of information for each film. I have a couple of books like this and was pleased to find out that there wasn't a lot of duplication from one book to another.

Written in the same dreamy, repetitive style, and set in Nepal where Andrews's Amerindian entourage encounters ancient Indian wisdom, this latest entry reads more like a fairy tale than the ethnological fact it purports to be. She meets her tall, well-built, spirit husband Windhorse, who points her toward her androgynous balance of female and male energies within herself. Her hostess-guide Ani turns out to be a guran , one who can manifest herself as a snow leopard at will. A 10-year-old girl's death forces Andrews to face her own mortality. Her Himalayan jaunt is dotted with episodes of crystal power, tears of joy, wise women, rapt visions and talk of healing Mother Earth.

Lynn V. Andrews has chronicled her path of self-discovery and her explorations into feminine spirituality in nine books in the "Medicine Woman" series, which include Jaguar Woman, The Woman of Wyrrd, and Shakkai. Changed my perspective on relationships

This book recounts Lynn's real adventure into her spirit marriage and meetings with other medicine women in Nepal. Her writing style evokes a novel -- but in your heart you KNOW it's real. You KNOW that you chose this book to teach you about yourself and your relationships. It was the first of her books I read, and now I must read THEM ALL.
It is the first book I've read about any relationship that gave me a tool to gain peace about my own relationships.

Lynn Andrews book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was different in a lot of ways from the other books of her's that I have read. This one was a little more mystical and not in the traditional sense. If you have enjoyed her other books, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy this one.
