Execellent!

I purchased the earlier version of this book 10 years ago and did the diet. I found it was very easy to follow. I lost 50 pounds in 3 months and I still have not gained it back and that was 10 years ago! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to loose weight and keep it off! Several of my friends and family have tried it and also lost weight and kept it off. Its easy and inexpensive.

A sensible effective diet.

This diet is no less than amazing. It not only helps you to lose weight, but teaches you how to keep the weight off. I have been overweight my entire life and this book has, in laymens terms, helped me to understand why. I have, after week 3 lost a total of 20 pounds and feel healthier, but much more importantly happier with myself. I have yet to feel as if I was cheated or starving. The foods are both tasty and healthy.
More importantly, this diet teachs you portion control and how to maintain your weight after you've reached your weight loss goal, a key factor to long term success.
This diet just makes sense.

Little Effort, Lots of Results

If you're reading this, our stories are the same and I know where you're coming from. Your search is over. This really, really works. From the beginning, the concept is SIMPLE. Buy the book, buy your groceries and just start! When I started six years ago, I lost 63 pounds in 3 months by eating 3 meals plus 2 snacks a day and walking twice a day (20 minutes each time). The menu is planned to charge up your metabolism and I felt the difference on week 1 (lost 12 pounds). By week 3, my clothes were really bagging and what a boost that was! Also, the menus are flexible enough to be appetizing for your family whether you're eating in or out.
This has been not only the weight loss plan that worked for me, but it has also been the basis for the low-fat eating lifestyle that is now embedded in me. I KNOW it will do the same for you! Good Luck!!!

A true classic

There used to be a time that the word "classic" meant something. Nowadays, it seems to only mean "more than ten years old"; quality doesn't come into the equation at all. Take, for example, the cable channel American Movie Classics, which typically features movies that are forgettable regardless of age. I prefer the classic definition of "classic", one that means something that is not only really good but withstands the test of time.

Put another way, look at the Da Vinci Code. A decent book and a phenomenal best-seller, but will people still be reading it decades from now? Only time will tell. Time, however, has already told on Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, and it is clearly, by any use of the word, a classic. Although forty-seven years old, it is still as good as ever.

Set in the town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Depression, To Kill a Mockingbird tells the tale of the Finch family: widower father Atticus, young son Jem and younger daughter (and narrator) Scout. Atticus, an attorney, has been appointed to represent Tom Robinson, accused of raping a 19-year-old girl named Mayall Ewell. Since Tom is black and Mayall is white, guilt is assumed by most of the town and the trial a mere formality. The truth plays little part.

Maycomb is a stratified society. There are the "respectable" people, who - with or without money - are considered the aristocrats of the community. The Finches fit into this category. There are the poorer white people, from the poor-yet-proud Cunninghams to the "trashy" Ewells. At the bottom are the blacks. Though Atticus refuses to participate in this classism (and tries to lead his children to do the same), he is pragmatic enough to acknowledge its existence.

This novel may have the trial of Tom Robinson as its centerpiece, but there is plenty more going on as we take a tour of an impoverished town in the Deep South. With this book, Lee has written one of the Great American Novels. And while some great authors are not easily readable (for example, Faulkner), Harper Lee holds the reader from the beginning to end.

Has there been any author who has written something so great in his or her only effort? Yes, there are authors like Margaret Mitchell who wrote Gone With the Wind (which has a far more romantic version of the Old South), but her career was cut short by an early death; Lee is still around and still has no other books published. The one book she wrote, however, is considered one of the greatest novels ever written. It is a true classic.

It's a Sin to Kill a Mockingbird...

My mother bequeathed her 1962 college edition hardcover to me in 1988, four years after I finished high school. It would be four more years before I myself went away to school, though I knew the story nearly by heart by then.

I reread Mockingbird every year at Eastertime, though I am not particularly religious, nor do I mark this time in any other particularly hopeful way. Many true bibliophiles I know still talk about this book and the way it changed them forever.

It deserves better than to be assigned reading to captive 6th and 10th graders. They read it then because they have to, not because some kind librarian or insightful teacher, or intuitive parent, sends it their way, like a lucky charm.

I am not a Southerner and unless you can call a Western New York born mother and an Owensboro, Kentucky bred father any sort of meaningful Southern influence in my life, I do not know why this story fits my life so well. It filled a need I never even knew was there until I closed its covers on first reading it.

I am a fan of both the writing and its message, its dual edged sword of hope and sorrow, the tragicomic aspect of its mood and setting.

I wanted to be Scout as a tomboy girl and when grown, to be Atticus; my cats have borne those monikers well.

I only wish my husband had not told me I could not name my own son after my hero.

A rare case where the movie and its inspiration are as beloved as its author, To Kill a Mockingbird, N words and all, needs to be read more---and not just as some lame excuse for a paper writing exercise. Scout, Jem and Dill come alive in these pages. They have meaning in their world and in this one.

The dialogue, minus a few colloquiallisms, is readable and real. You will laugh out loud at times when Scout makes her mind known to you.

You'll wish Atticus was a real man. Maybe you'll even feel a little guilty about wanting him to replace your father in real life.

And Tom Robinson? He'll break your heart. He should.

I was once told my Coleman family had some relation to Harper Lee's father's family and, if that bit of fiction has even the remotest grain of truth to it, I am even happier now than I was just having imagined it.

New & Revised version even better! Large Print.

I have to admit that I was not initially a fan of Tom Hopkins. To me he comes across like a used car salesman with a high pressure type of sales tactic.

My business is network marketing, and we use a soft sell approach. I was conferring with the top rep in my group who is making some insane income in our company. I asked him what he attributed to his success and he mentioned several books and tapes, but when it comes to selling, he said Tom Hopkins is tops.

I was at my favorite bookstore on Friday and was happy to see that the new and and revised version of this book was just released. It has a purple cover and large print. Over 420 pages loaded with information. I spent four hours non stop reading this great text, the most informative sales book that I have ever read. This is indeed the bible of salemanship.

Nice intro by Mr. Hopkins mentor, the late J. Douglas Edwards. Then on to what makes a great saleman. Chapter after chapter by Hopkins covering every aspect of selling. I used some of Hopkins techniques earlier today, qualifying prospects and working on presentation skills ala Tom Hopkins. I began to use "tiedowns" and the the "ben franklin close" and have to admit I felt a little silly at first, but it worked!

I can't wait untill I truly master all of the skills Mr. Hopkins presents in this masterpiece. Then I will really be dangerous.

Right now I am only halfway though the book. Wait untill I finish it and master these skills!

Great for your first Hopkins book, too much review for seasoned Hopkins fans

I've been anticipating the release of this book when I saw it was being published, and as good as Tom Hopkins is (peerless, frankly, in my eyes) in the world of sales skills training, I was a little disappointed in this book.

I have read his classic, epic, bestselling and game-shifting "How to Master the Art of Selling", and I have a hard time turning anywhere else when I have questions or want to refresh on the basics. I am aware there are other sales trainers, but for my money (and the money I'll make!) Tom Hopkins is the gold-standard.

Some of his other books bear mention here: "Low Profile Selling" is fantastic, replete with scripts and language and good tips for how to approach the sales process without coming off as a pushy, greedy salesperson. His "Guide to Greatness in Sales" is another very good, very on-the-ground counsel for people who find themselves 6 months to five years in the business and are dealing with some of the requisite growing pains.

I also can't mention highly enough his 3-CD audio collection; I have relied on disc 2 (Advanced Survival Training) more than I ever thought I would and it kept me going when I was contemplating throwing in the towel.

One of the things, I think, that separates Tom Hopkins from the others is that he is selling the profession of selling to all of us, his students, in the best possible way. Demonstrating the principles he teaches, he paints vivid emotional pictures for us to imagine ourselves as successful salespeople, pictures that give us the desire to undergo the training to go out and win. It's brilliant.

So I came to the latest book with this deep respect for his teachings, and is perhaps why I was underwhelmed by the book. He surely does update some of his best material for the book, and tailor it in ways to the financial services industry, but much of what he says about sales in the financial services industry - such as that your prospects are nervous about making a big decision with their money, can they trust you with it, your company, etc.? - doesn't differ substantially from sales in other areas too: real estate, corporate purchasing, high-net worth products - anywhere, in fact, where a large purchase is made, so doesn't seem that this advice is tailored or only relevant to the financial services industry.

I suppose I was hoping for more script language, more specifically adapted material to financial services, but much of the book dwelt on fundamentals of any sales process - finessing the first impression, becoming referrable, etc - such that after all the exposure I've had to his teachings, I didn't find anything here that made me go "Wow, that's exactly right for my field!"

That said, if you are considering this as your first Tom Hopkins book, and you work in the financial services industry, I would say without a doubt that it is an excellent introduction to his teaching, and that once you read this you'd be well-served to visit the previously mentioned works too and mine them for all of their brilliance.

This is a must-read book for all sales professionals.

How to Master the Art of Selling is a book that must be read by anyone planning on entering the sales profession, and everyone currently in sales. No matter how good a salesperson you believe yourself to be, your sales skills can be sharpened by the information contained within the pages of this book. Tom Hopkins has been a master salesperson for many years. He has taken the time to compile all of his proven sales techniques and list them in an easy to follow format. Since I read this book, my sales have increased dramatically. Even though I have read this book from cover to cover many times, something new is gained every time I read it. You don't have to be in sales to benefit from the knowledge that is in this book. What you are selling does not necessarily have to be a product. It could be a point of view or an idea. How would you like to be able to talk someone into or out of something? You will be able to, if you follow the guidelines that are in this book. You will have a better understanding as to what people think about when they make decisions. Mr. Hopkins calls the people who have mastered the techniques in this book "champions". He says, "you know the champions when they walk through the door." If you want to be a champion,

This is one of those intriguing, suspenseful novels that stay with you for a while. It's the story of a little girl who is experiencing terrifying and painful episodes. As the story progresses it seems that they may be the result of a past-life trauma which for some reason she if reliving in her new body. The dramatic episodes and mysterious past-life are fascinating, frightening, and gripping. It's a great escapist read that draws you in and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

"Audrey Rose" is not only a great book, of a family torn apart, by what they don't even beleive in, but it also presents a good representation of reincarnation.
When Hoover's own daughter died, he was heart broken, but then he heard from a respected psychic that his daughter was still alive. He made the decision to find her, but how would you feel and how much you would you believe, from a man who is certain you have his daughter, reincarnated in your own child?
And what happens when you start to believe it?

I'M BAAAACCK...

I read this book when it was first released some thirty odd years ago, and I really enjoyed it at the time. In rereading it, I find that I enjoyed it less the second time around.

The story line is fairly simple. Elliot Hoover is a distraught man who lost his wife and five year old daughter, Audrey Rose, years ago in a car accident in Pennsylvania, where they lived at the time. The car went up in a ball of flames with his little girl trying unsuccessfully to get out. He now firmly believes that his daughter has been reborn in the body of another little girl, Ivy Templeton, who lives with her parents in New York. He also believes that his daughter was reincarnated too soon and now lives in torment in Ivy's body.

The book details Elliot Hoover's efforts to help his daughter, and the Templeton's efforts to help theirs. Some parts of the book are interesting, while other parts drag on at times. I was not sorry when the book ended. Still, those who enjoy books with supernatural portents or who are interested in the topic of reincarnation will derive some enjoyment from this book.

"The Master" does it again...

Part two of Roger Angell's 15 year written love affair with baseball...this book picks up where "The Summer Game" left off and doesn't miss a beat, covering the 1972 through 1976 seasons. Each chapter has all the classic written/observed anecdotes that Angell is famous for, as well as expert detailed coverage of the game(s) and the ever-discouraging front-office activities that the 70's were famous for (the Reserve Clause, the advent of Free Agency...etc). Still, Angell's ability to write insightful and elegant observations are what make this and The Summer Game standout and really makes all other baseball writing pale by comparison. For this book, he also adds something different when he takes on small projects such as following a Major League scout around the country, visiting with three Detroit Tiger fanatics and detailing the almost tragic rise and fall of Steve Blass, the Pittsburgh Pirate hero from the 1971 World Series. Each of these off-normal stories essentially "tells" itself, but Angell frames each in his own inimitable style that really defines "story-telling". I have such high regard for his writing that I wish he'd take on other projects (like history writing in general), as I'm sure that he'd excel there too (of course, being in his 80's probably has a lot to do with which projects he chooses to undertake). I read recently that Angell hates being called the "Poet Laureat" of baseball writing, but I can't think of a finer term for so marvelous a writer. This book should be combined with "Summer Game" and re-issued as a single volume for future writers to use as a model for taking a subject and turn it into expert storytelling. Highest recommendation!

Best Baseball Book Ever

In the early 1970's, I took a group of German exchange students to a Dodgers game. It was challenging - how to explain baseball, in German, to these bewildered young women, using the action on the field as a tool? Bought them all a copy of the team manager's book about the game as a souveneir. But if I'd had Roger Angell's marvelous book available, only the translation would have been a challenge.

The first chapter of this book is the finest explanation of the game ever written.

The first paragraph of Chapter 10 (as I remember it) is the best single-sentence opening of a story I've ever read. It's about opening day of spring training, I have it memorized, and it's far, far too long to quote here. Angell is a master wordsmith with a glorious sense of insight.

And by the way, his life story as recounted in another book, "Let Me Finish," is wonderful. But what would you expect from the grandson of the victim in a famous shipwreck, son of a pioneering civil rights lawyer and a famous "New Yorker" editor, stepson of E.B. White, and survivor of the Great Depression, WWII, and the madly-intriguing era of the '50's and '60's? What a grand writer!

How much we've lost

This is a depressing book. Not because its subject is depressing; we're not talking about the Ukranian famine of 1932 here. No, this is a "You are there" book written at the end of baseball as we knew it. We weren't aware of that at the time, though we could see that things were changing. But we thought, and were repeatedly assured, that the changes would work themselves out. However, if you're over 40, you know they didn't, and baseball is a far less fun activity as a fan than it was then. There are innumerable little tidbits that make you see how much things have deteriorated. Tom Seaver pitches 12 innings. 12! A manager today would have the talk radio hordes ready to unman him for that, but it is only one of many. Steve Carlton threw 30 complete games in 1972. Contemplate that. 30. More than most teams, heck, probably more than most divisions today. He won 27 games on a team that won 59 total. Unfathomable. But unlike the managers who fear their million dollar boys will throw out their arms, Carlton came back and achieved that for more than another decade. Sure he was a great. But there are innumerable tales through here of guys who weren't greats, just solid players, performing in ways that would be unheard of, or at the minimum, worth millions of dollars, today, and doing it happily, without whining, griping, complaining, simpering or gloating.

Angell chronicles 5 wonderful seasons in the history of baseball, the years of Finley's Athletics and the Big Red Machine, and a new owner for the Yankees named George Steinbrenner, the arrival of Robin Yount and Mark Fidrych and George Brett and oh so many others. But because it is reporting, he also documents the arrival of guys who flashed briefly and then vanished. Baseball is like that.

But it is the creeping arrival of ugliness that hurts to read. Reggie's showboating. Young kids who don't respect their manager. And big money. The sports page went from stories about hits and errors to tales of contract negotiations, threats, and free agency. I know money has always been a part of the game, and there were drunks, wife-beaters, and thugs in baseball since the beginning. But the big contracts and big payrolls have made all the teams change their perspective, and though throughout this book the players assure us we won't think differently about them as a result of these changes, we do. Teams are no longer teams as they once were, a reliable group of guys who continued for years together and added the missing piece or replaced the aging veteran incrementally. They are an assemblage of whomever can be gathered up to make a winner. Because we still want a winner, but we no longer care about the guys who do the winning. How sad. And for me and many of my generation, how boring. Baseball just isn't what it was, and it isn't the DH or the long season or frigid World Series games. No, it's money, and the game has been permanently corrupted by it. So read this to see how it once was, how glory and honor could be achieved on the field rather than in the contract.

And feel disheartened for what we've lost, with nothing good to replace it.

A must have for thorough preperation

This book contains the official 1989-1990 GRE Chemistry test, one of only a handful of official tests released to the public. That alone makes in an invaluable study tool. To my knowledge, the test is not available anywhere else because of copyright constraints. The book also contains an unofficial practice test of 145 questions with answers, which I also found extremely helpful.

I've found there is no better way to practice than by getting used to the test - by taking as many practice tests as you can. This book is an important resource since it provides two chances to practice.

Two Practice Exams worth of Questions

Many of the exact questions from this practice booklet showed up on my exam. This has one full practice exam, plus another exam's worth of questions separated by subject. I felt very prepared for my exam, and this was my main study tool. I also reviewed my textbooks and class notes. I did use some additional study guides, but I didn't find them to be very helpful, and their practice questions were nothing like the exam. This book had the exact types of questions that show up on the actual GRE subject test in Chemistry.

Serves as one whole session of sensory overload from start to finish.

Reading Wild Orchids by Karen Robards for the 3rd time doesn’t seem to have diminished my enjoyment factor of the novel by even one iota. Call me crazy but even with the massive amount of books I have on my review pile, I just had to pick this one up and read it in one sitting yet again because the magic that is Max and Lora is an unbeatable one for me.

37 year old John Roberts Maxwell (Max) is a man hardened by the reality of war that had been his way of life when he had been enlisted in the Vietnam war. Leaving a piece of his soul behind due to the decisions he had been forced to make, Max comes home a changed man, a man incapable of giving what his innocent wife had demanded of him. A cynic to the core, Max doesn’t realize that life as he knows it would cease to exist the moment he kidnaps the prim and proper Lora in his attempt to evade the authorities of Mexico.

27 year old Lora Susan Harding is finally a free woman with the right to while away her time as she pleases. Having spent most of her life trying to put others needs first, Lora is ecstatic with the thought of exploring the exotic Mexico, the first vacation she has ever taken in her life. However, from the very start, her vacation refuses to proceed along as she envisoned it and being kidnapped at gun point by a disreputable looking man with an American accent just seems to be the icing on the cake.

At first, Lora is scared out of her wits at the thought of the less than savory acts her captor might try and force on her. A lady through and through, Lora hardly accepts herself to find her captor ridiculously sexy to the extent of ogling him and eating him up with her eyes every chance she gets. No stranger to the world of intimacy, Lora however has no clue that the uninhibited creature that emerges from deep within her that just wants to lick her delectable and broody captor from head to toe is a side of her that exists.

After Lora’s multiple attempts to escape which falls flat on her face every single time, Lora comes to the disturbing conclusion that she has a bad case of the Stockholme’s syndrome if judging the way all her emotions go haywire around Max is anything to judge herself by. Through a chain of events, Lora finds herself stranded in the midst of a Mexican jungle, depending on Max for her very survival. As the proximity heightens the already taut live wire of sexual tension between them, both Max and Lora find themselves to be no match for its heady power.

Wild Orchids would always remain by far my most favorite novel by Karen Robards. For some, Max might not be the stuff dreams are made out of. But when push comes to shove, Max is a man who delivers and Lord does he deliver! A man who is leery of commitment and relationships, Max cannot believe himself when he starts lusting after the prim schoolteacher who lands in his life. The harder he tries to shove her thoughts and presence out of his mind, the more tenacious her hold on him becomes and its a match that Max loses, rather ungraciously at first. Vital, sexy and the ultimate dangerous hero is how I would describe Max.

Lora’s character is an endearing mix of innocence and practicality all laced into one with a body that practically drives Max to the brink of insanity. It is the way she reaches far deeper than just his baser emotions that has Max struggling to shove her away with all his might, a man reluctant to share his demons with a woman Max thinks would be just as incapable of handling reality as his ex-wife had seemed to be.

Though towards the end, I definitely want a bit more grovelling from Max every time I read this one, I think the ending itself might be growing on me as I didn’t find it that sorely lacking the third time around. It seemed a fitting ending based on both Max and Lora’s characters and my bet is Lora loves Max too much to even give him enough leeway to do much grovelling even if it were to come to that.

The best thing about this book, hands down is the raw, explosive and primitive passion between two people that just serves as one whole session of sensory overload from start to finish.

Highly recommended!

Not my favorite story by this author

This was a slow starter for me. Difficult to get into the story. Then when I did start to get interested in it, the hero (or anti-hero) was a disappointment. It simply was not an appealing story nor had an appealing lead character with redeeming qualities for this genre. I realize this is a re-published early work of Ms. Robards and I have enjoyed many of her books throughout the years, but this is not one of them unfortunately.

I have been looking for a novel about a woman who seemed organized and simple, goes on a vacation alone then ends up kidnapped and at first fears for her life but her kidnapper turns out to have a purpose in kidnapping her and later on she falls in love with him. Karen Robards knows how to make a sexy, romantic and funny adventure for a couple.
