EDGAR CAYCE MAY JUST BE THE ONLY TEACHER YOU'LL EVER NEED~

I greatly admire the life and work of Edgar Cayce, and this book is an excellent example of WHY: Cayce was a humble, highly evolved soul totally committed to a life of service to suffering children. He'd given free health readings, in a self-induced trance state, for about twelve years before reincarnation was ever mentioned (as the reason for a child's illness). Cayce believed his psychic abilities were the gift from God he'd been promised by an angel as a child, and he read the entire Bible cover to cover yearly, so he was not in any way prepared to accept the idea of reincarnation! Fortunately for us, after much prayer & soul-searching he reconciled the concept with his Judeo-Christian beliefs, and in the process taught us how to do the same. Cayce is the the perfect person to guide Christians just starting to question karma & reincarnation, as well as for more advanced students.(His work includes a list of diseases related to past-life actions which is amazing). Heresy or Simple Logic? This book begs the question!

Are you interested in exploring the concept of reincarnation,without feeling like some spooky little ghoul with an agenda as longas your arm is infusing your brain with the Words of Satan? Well, this book is for you. Written simply, clearly and compellingly, "Edgar Cayce on Reincarnation" motivates the reader to contemplate the question, "Irreversible death or ongoing life?" This review will not provide the answer, nor is it meant to. I'm not sure this book provides the answer, either; just food for thought. And isn't that just grand? Me, I like reading a book that doesn't shove doctrine down my throat. I like looking at things in a pragmatic, sensible fashion, and then arriving at my own conclusions. I was able to do that with this book, and will not hesitate to use it as a reference in the future. "Edgar Cayce on Reincarnation" was so interesting and so thought-provoking that I have devoted myself and (some of) my time to learning more about this truly fascinating man, his offspring and the "A.R.E." I recommend it highly!

An interesting book for those who are seeking information on Edgar Cayce and reincarnation.

In my youth I rejected any and all forms of pseudoscience. I am still a scientific minded person who rejects the mythical concept of God, but in my senior years I decided to explore some esoteric material. It may be because the older we get the more we realize our own mortality or may still be searching for a way to live forever? I had heard of Edgar Cayce in the past but read very little about him until I picked up this 288 page well-worn paperback (Edgar Cayce on Reincarnation by Noel Langley, under the editorship of Hugh Lynn Cayce, director, Association for research and enlightenment) book at our library in the free book section.

This interesting volume explores the numerous strange psychic readings of Edgar Cayce of people who may have lived other lives in the past. Some of the material this book covers includes the following: forward by Hugh Lynn Cayce, have I lived before? If we have lived before, why don’t we remember? Man’s subconscious is immortal, physical and emotional Karma, the element of fear in emotional Karma, vocational Karma, life readings for children, man-the stranger in the Earth, Edgar Cayce’s own credo, does the bible condemn reincarnation? Why isn’t reincarnation in the bible? The work of Dr. Ian Stevenson, the law of grace and many other interesting topics.

Reading this book did not change my mind and philosophy when it comes to mysticism; however, it is certainly an entertaining and thought provoking treatment on the subject of reincarnation.

I would caution readers that this is not a book that you will feel good about reading

While this book deals with many disturbing subject matters (including child abuse, child sexual abuse, and voyeurism, just to name a few), I felt that it was worth the read. I would caution readers that this is not a book that you will feel good about reading. It doesn't have a happy ending, or even a particularly just ending. However, I felt that Jack Ketchum did an excellent job writing this book. You almost feel like you're part of the problem, taking a backseat in observing the abuse taking place. I realize this sounds awful, and I don't think this book is for everyone. However, as someone who works with the victims of child abuse on a daily basis, I feel that this book is a necessary and useful depiction of how easily people can become abusers.

Interesting and disturbing read.

I'm not really sure what I can say that others haven't already said. This book is a great [yet horrifying] take on a famous murder. The mob mentality aspect of this crime has haunted and fascinated me for years and since I already loved Jack Ketchum's work, I had to pick up this book as well.

I personally love Ketchum's writing. I'm not an authority on writing, I'm a terrible writer myself, but I think he's very talented and he obviously cares about writing coherently and descriptively.

I rated it 4 stars because it's not completely accurate to the true story it tells. It embellishes and changes some events, and if I recall correctly, even adds a couple that didn't occur in life. That said, I realize it's not meant to be an autobiography or anything, but I feel that the crime was terrible enough without exaggerating it to be even more unthinkable. It somehow cheapens or trivializes the events by showing how much worse they could have been.

This book is not for the faint of heart. Really, none of Ketchum's work is, but it's worth repeating. You will not be able to finish this book if graphic violence disturbs you.

Excellently Written but too disturbing for me.

I couldn't finish it. I was looking for more of a classic horror scary book. This book wasn't scary in the traditional sense, it was just very disturbing in the whole "humans are the real monsters" sense. I got about half way through it before I had to stop. It reminded me of "A child called it" honestly and that book was disturbing too. Ruth's descent into madness was interesting but I couldn't stomach the vile and evil thing she did and allowed the kids to do to Meg. For what appears to be no reason (granted the reasoning may become apparent in later chapters). It saddens me that this was based on a true story and I'm sure things like this or worse have happened to people but I can't stomach it. 3.5 stars as it was excellently written just too intense/disturbing for me.

The test of time

I read this gripping saga when it was first published some 20 years ago. Since then, I've recommended it to friends and to newcomers to Boston. Recently, I bought a copy at a local library sale and began to re-read it. I am as caught up in it now as I was all those years ago when I first read it. Martin's "Back Bay" does withstand the test of time. The story is cleverly told by the use of flashback. The reader learns the secret and the mystery of the Pratt family early in the book but must wait for the revelation and solution along with the characters who live in the 20th century. The story is a marvelous blend of fact and fiction and is a must read for anyone who loves Boston, history, and mystery. I would also recommend, as a companion book, Walter Muir Whitehill's topographical history of Boston.

William Martin takes his place as the premier historical novelist of our generation. He capably wears the mantle passed down from Michener as story telling historian. He makes us want to learn history. His stories are living entities not a collection of memorized dates. Back Bay carries on the tradition of Cape Cod in both educating and entertaining the reader. This is an art he has refined in Annnapolis and Citizen Washington. While I loved Michener, I often found his introduction a bit laborious. Martin immediately immerses the reader in the story and pulls you along with such compelling force that one rarely knows when to one can take a break. Having live in Boston, I learned more intwo days of reading than in the 3 years of living. From South Boston to the Commons and Beacon Hill, this story brings one of America's first cities alive. The city is the main character.

gripping...couldn't put it down!

I am not always much of a reader, but this book caught me from the first pages. It is a MUST for anyone who knows and/or loves the city of Boston and the history that goes along with it. I found myself visualizing the streets and areas of Boston as I read each chapter. My only disappointment was the ending...I could not believe that I was on the last page! I wanted it to end differently for the characters (thus, only 4 stars), but overall I was quite satisfied with the book. I am now going to dig into Cape Cod, but the same author.

The "best book" from the "best man" of nutrition!

WOW! What a book. One and a half years ago I didn't know much about Dr. Mindell. I found that this book the "Vitamin Bible" is translated into 30 languages and sells in 54 different countries. It was written in 1979 and still sells 10,000 copies every single week. Once again, WOW! What is even more amazing is that Dr. Mindell has now introduced his own line of Vitamins and Minerals using his 30+ years of research. I was lost in the health food stores as to what vitamins to take and to the quality of those vitamins. Now, the man of nutrition, the one and only Dr. Earl Mindell, has taken the guess work out of it. This book alone is all the credibility that I needed, not to mention all of his other best sellers. His products are definitely worth taking a look at, as they come with a 60-day unconditional empty bottle guarantee. Sweet Sleep now

I am grateful for Dr. Mindell and his great Vitamin Bible. I would find myself sleeping less and less and becoming more and more fatigued. I t was Dr Mindell" suggestion in this book that showed me the light in the darkness (pun not intended). By following his sugggestions I am now a sweet sleeper. I am delightfully suprised to learn that Dr. Mindell is now personally formulating a vitamins supplements line exclusively for one company. I am excited to know that I can have access to them. Along with the vitamin bible My life will be superb. long live the Vitamin Bible

At five hundred and eighty-four pages, this thick paperback book has everything a person needs or wants to know about vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Within twenty-two chapters, the textbook begins with the basics explaining vitamins and supplements, what they are, how they are made and how they affect our bodies. A must-read for anyone remotely interested in the film biz

Writing screenplays can be a thankless task; producers, directors, and actors all have their own agendas and many are quite willing to sack the writer at the earliest opportunity in order to further those agendas. The salary can be nice, for sure, but you have to wonder sometimes why writers put up with it. Adventures in the Screen Trade will certainly have you asking that question more than once, but it also helps you get inside a writer's head and understand the rewards.
William Goldman wrote Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Princess Bride (both the book and the screenplay), and a ton of other books and screenplays. There's plenty of humor in Adventures, although not of the absurd type found in Princess Bride; it's more of a light-hearted, can-you-believe-this tone that you'd expect to hear from someone who is supposed to give a lecture but decides he wants to drop the pretense and have an informal conversation with the audience.
The book opens with Goldman's analysis of the various elements of the film industry. The heart of the book, though, is probably the middle two sections. Goldman discusses his own adventures in the trade, and devotes at least a chapter to most of the films on which he worked from 1965 to 1979. He talks about the problems he encountered trying to find the "spine" of the stories, the structure that would let him transform an idea into a blueprint for a movie. He discusses the negotiations that tried to navigate through all those agendas - and sometimes succeeded; what connected with an audience and what didn't; and the small thrills that can be a part of the moviemaking process, like Sir Lawrence Olivier asking him if it was OK to rearrange a few words of dialogue in Marathon Man. There is some fairly juicy behind-the-scenes gossip here, but Goldman doesn't come off as vindictive; he's often just as critical of himself as he is of anyone else, and he seems to understand how people with the best of intentions can still wind up making each other's lives difficult.
He also dissects the screenplay to Butch Cassidy - reprinted here in its entirety - in great detail. Both the dissection and the screenplay itself are tremendously useful to anyone who really wants to understand the screenwriting process, even though I'm fairly certain these days that very few people use quite the format that Goldman does. The final section of the book is another boon to those interested in the guts of screenwriting. Goldman takes one of his old short stories, transforms it into a short screenplay, and then gets feedback on the script from top Hollywood professionals in a number of disciplines. It gives an added perspective to the look behind the curtain of filmmaking and balances the memoir elements of the book quite well.
I've reread this book at least five times, and I still enjoy it thoroughly. That I've learned anything is a considerable bonus. For education or enjoyment, you can't beat this book.

A great book by America's best screenwriter

Goldman (whose credits include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, Misery, and the Princess Bride, and who is also a terrific novelist) was the first screenwriter whose name I recognized as having appeared on the credits of several films. He has since become my favorite, so when I found that he had written a book on the workings of the screenwriter in Hollywood--a town for which I have always had great fascination--I knew I had to read it. Unfortunately, it was years before I finally got around to it.
To give you an idea how good I think this book is, I had read Stephen King's Needful Things (app. 800 pages) in five days and that was at that point my quickest pace. Well, I read Adventures in the Screen Trade (including the full script of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid--a terrific read in itself, and alone worth the price of the book--a total of 600 pages) in two days. I just couldn't put the thing down, and I find that phrase to be a cliche of the most odious order. I was reading it at breakfast, on my commute in, at lunch, the commute out, all evening, and before bed. Goldman writes such a gripping story of his experiences in Tinseltown, that I was drawn in, always wondering what was going to happen next.
Only once did my interest flag, and that was halfway through a screen adaptation of a story presented in the book just beforehand. The story was ten pages, the adaptation forty, so I simply felt at that point that I was reading the story over, it was just longer. However, once I got over that and realized that the point of the exercise was to illustrate the differences in form, I read again with relish.
Goldman writes with a nicely conversational style--but not overtly so--that draws you in to his world. I think that this book would be especially of interest to anyone who wants to write for Hollywood (although you may not wish to continue with that dream after reading this), or any writers in general (as he goes over form and structure that is relevant to all writing), or to a fan of the behind-the-scenes workings of Hollywood.

A revealing insider�s view with panache

The allusion to the "skin trade" in the title isintentional of course. Goldman is playing the old saw about thescreenwriter as very well-paid whore. Be that as it may, this is an excellent book. If you're even thinking of becoming a screenwriter you ought to read it. You may change your mind, and then again you may not. You'll learn some screenwriting tricks and get a vivid glimpse inside the industry, circa 1982.
Goldman has a style that is as earnest as all heck, emphatic, breezy, engaging, flippant, a little high schoolish-but that plays. He thinks very highly of himself, but he is also a modest man. (Reasonable combination.) He trashes some people here, lionizes some others, but bottom line, he's not afraid to reveal himself, foibles and all. His two main rules of Hollywood are: NOBODY KNOWS ANYTHING and SCREENPLAYS ARE STRUCTURE (his caps). He means that nobody knows ahead of time what is going to be a successful movie, and it's a mistake to think that screenplays are mainly dialogue (I used to think that) because what really counts is the structure.
Part One is about "Hollywood Realities" and it's the best part of the book: who controls whom and what, the pecking order, etc. Part Two he calls "Adventures" and it's about what it was like making some of the movies he was involved in; and remember Goldman wrote some top drawer films: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), All the President's Men (1976), to name a couple. This part is also very good. Part Three he calls "Da Vinci" from the title of a short story he wrote as a young man that he turns into a screen play for the edification of his readers. The story is a dog and the screenplay not very readable, but it's good textbook stuff. A highlight is George Roy Hill's acidic comments on the script. I give Goldman credit for including that and I also give him credit for telling it like it is from his POV. He's one very professional, very hard-working writer with a fine understanding of movie psychology, somebody well worth listening to. END

THE STORY OF THE DISCOVERY OF "AUSTRALOPITHECUS AFARENSIS"

Donald Carl Johanson (born 1943) is an American paleoanthropologist; he has also written Lucy's Child: The Discovery of a Human Ancestor, From Lucy to Language, Ancestors: In Search of Human Origins, and Lucy's Legacy: The Quest for Human Origins. [NOTE: page numbers refer to the 409-page hardcover edition.]

He wrote in the Prologue to this 1981 of his team's discovery of the "Lucy" fossil: "There was no bone duplication. But a single individual of what? On preliminary examination it was very hard to say, for nothing quite like it had ever been discovered. The camp was rocking with excitement. That first night we never went to bed at all. We talked and talked. We drank beer after beer. There was a tape recorder in the camp, and a tape of the Beatles song 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' went belting out into the night sky, and was played at full volume over and over again out of sheer exuberance. At some point during that unforgettable evening... the new fossil picked up the name of Lucy, and has been so known ever since..." (Pg. 18)

Of the arguments of Sir Solly Zuckerman [Beyond the Ivory Tower, he notes, "With Zuckerman kicking up more and more biometric dust, Le Gros Clark thought it appropriate to challenge him to produce a full set of chimpanzee teeth that bore any resemblance to australopithecine teeth. Zuckerman could not. He ignored the challenge and continued to fire off statistical salvos until professional statisticians began pointing out that his figures had not been calculated properly." (Pg. 76)

He notes, "[C. Owen] Lovejoy does not have a good explanation for the condition of Lucy's hand ro arm. Compared with a human arm, hers is rather long, so he again asks the question: what did she use the long arm for?... Lucy's sexual strategy had turned her into a biped. Did she climb at all? If so, how much?... how does one explain her hand? It should have long, apelike fingers, but it does not. They are rather short. Furthermore, although it has the fully opposable thumb of humans, the muscles of the base of the thumb appear to have been small. This means that ... power gripping which involved the thumb and the entire hand was poor. This is exactly opposite to what scientists hitherto have thought... Lovejoy admits that it may take years to unravel that problem." (Pg. 348-349)

The best kept secret ladies.

I have found this book, several times, as I have one in storage and bought a new one on line traveling. At first, I spent an hour practicing the correct exercises, but have been able to reduce the time required to about 20 minutes. It is as remarkable as it says and it makes sense as we do not realize how little we work our facial muscles until we start exercising them as we do our body. I highly recommend this book as it is simple, with little peripheral nonsense. Some of the books spend a great deal of time talking about face masks of mashed avocado, etc. I am just interested in the exercises. So, if that is important to you, I suggest you buy this book. It was more expensive to pay the shipping than the book itself.

Worst book I've read in ages
By just a fan
I have read and enjoyed numerous books by Ms Brown but this one was horrible. I wish that I would have known she was going to waste my time writing about a woman lusting after a Texas cowboy. I am not in any way offended by descriptive sex acts and/or descriptions about sexual desire but not when that is ALL the book is about.

Richard M. Nixon : Excellent political memoir

"Even Richard Nixon has got soul", wrote Neil Young in his song 'Campaigner'. This book chronicles Richard Nixon's rise and fall with candid honesty and demonstarates a warmth and human falibilty that does indeed afirm Young's lyric.
I was surprised at Mr. Nixon's book in that I was unsympathetic at the time with his handling of Vietnam and felt he was out of touch with the vast anti-war movement in the USA. I feel now that he was harshly judged and that he should be saluted for his untiring efforts to maintain freedom and democracy in Asia.
The best parts of the book are when he describes meetings with other world leaders and provide a fascinating insight into the process of diplomacy at the highest level of goverment.
The Watergate sections are complicated and one is left with the impression that he got into a hole and could'nt stop digging.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the machinations of high politics and anyone who wishes an insight into a turbulent period in American history.

Get paper version, not Kindle

My rating is for the Kindle version only. I have used this book for years in paper and would give it five stars. It's excellent. But I found the Kindle version difficult to use. I searched the word "handsome" and expected to be taken to the main entry where I could and read the synonyms. No luck. Instead, it found the word in other entries and did not permit me to turn pages to find the main entry. Buy it in paper. The paper version is superior to Roget's in that one need only look up the word alphabetically. With Roget it's a two-step process.

Needs different formatting.

This book is great,better than a thesaurus. My only complaint is that it is hard to navigate in kindle form. Looking up a word doesn't work like a dictionary. Word search only brings up the word as it appears everywhere within the book. The problem is really the kindle formatting not the book itself.

Useless on Kindle. Great resource in print, but there's no practical way to find the word you're looking for on the Kindle. Very disappointing.
