About the Author
Bill Baldwin is the author of the bestselling Helmsman series and Canby’s Legion. He is a graduate of The Mercersburg Academy and the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned a B.A. in Journalism and a Master of Letters degree. He served as a Lieutenant at the U.S. Air Force Missile Test Center, Foreign Technology Division, Cape Canaveral, Florida, supporting Project Mercury as Chief of the Reports Division. Later, Baldwin served as a contractor for the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center.

Fans of space opera and military sci-fi may enjoy this production, a hybrid narration/full-cast dramatization with sound effects in which Wilf Brim becomes the hero of the Imperial Fleet, winning the heart of a princess. Others will find the writing lackluster and adolescent. (The sex scenes seem especially sophomoric.) Steve Cumming is an enjoyable narrator (despite some mispronunciations), but the sound effects lose power when softened to allow him to be heard. A fantastic start to a great adventure by a terrific author. Have read several in paperback and now can read the whole series. Well worth it.

Loved this book!

Really enjoyed this book and am trying to get the rest of them in hardback. Baldwin does a superb job of writing of the order of Heinlein, Zahn and Laumer (my other favorites). His technology descriptions make you think these anti-gravity and hyperspace things really work! Please write more!

The adventure is ok and the character is mildly interesting kid from the wrong side of the tracks with great talent manages to meet and impress the princess etc. The writing annoyed me a bit at times as every other sentence seems to be about some character winking at another character and pages long explanations of liftoff preparation checklists. The main alien species is compared to a bear and speaks with Russian accents and uses Russian names... maybe supposed to have been genetically lifted by humans earlier? Anyway there are some barebones ideas and parts of the story are entertaining but overall not amongst the better science fiction books I've read. Distinctly average to me and I won't be buying the next book unless I really feel I'm out of escapist reading materiel.
