Breathtaking artwork!

Absolutely brilliant! The quality of these books are unmatched! They feel like velvet, the artwork is beautiful! They are so incredibly perfect, I'm afraid to pick them up to read. The picture makes it appear yellow, but it is actually a brilliant orange in color. My youngest cooed, "Oh, it's like Halloween! I love it!" Beautiful artwork for a wonderful book. Cannot recommend enough!

Absolutely wonderful-nothing like the remake!

Shirley Jackson is truly the master of horror. She weaves a dark tale of loneliness, depression, sadness, obsession and fear. Most readers, who have seen the remake, seem to be impressed with special effects and cheesy plots. This story is chilling not because of the supernatural themes, but because of the dark recesses of human nature. People don't seem to realize that the ending (without giving too much away) depicts Eleanor's response towards her feelings of isolation and depression. Who knows if she did what she did because of a ghost or because she was truly mad? was she trying to stay in the only place that understood her or was the house trying to keep her? Please, don't base this literary masterpiece on a REALLY bad movie. read the book and decide WHO was in control-Eleanor or Hill House?

This one of my favorite authors that was taken to soon. This story leaves one chilled and wondering if that sound you just heard was the air coming on or something most sinister. Love it and will be purchasing the rest of her books. Funny thing is The Lottery is not my favorite. If you have children you will love Rasing Demons and Life Among the Savages. It was written in the fifties and still holds true today. Enjoy

I've loved this book......

....for many years. I read it when I was in high school and the concepts stayed with me (I'm now 54!). This copy was for a friend with whom I am working to start a community based on some of the philosophy shared in the book.

The story may seem far fetched - a utopian society based on unconditional love. But this may not be so far from what can be possible, eventually. There has been a shift in human thinking and consciousness, which is evident in the increasing number of people rising up and protesting the current conditions under which they live. Many people are realizing that the way we've been brought up to think about life and our place in the world, is not the only way to view things. We know that we cannot go on living as we have been. We know that nearly everyone has been living a life of enslavement. We are now shaking off the shackles of that existence and waking up to the reality of how we've been living.

But the question is how do we achieve our goals? The paradigm of using violence to effect change no longer works. It really never did. It only creates more of the same with different sociopaths in charge. You cannot force people to change and adopt new ways of thinking or living. Not in the long run. We need a different path this time. People like Gandhi and Martin Luther King gave us a hint, a clue and an example to follow.

I don't think we will develop into the type of society described in the book. It is a rather rigid system which I don't see people following, but the basis, the major shift from an system of exploitation to one of total support through community, is entirely possible. This is what my friends and I are working on. An existence where people are free to pursue their passions and be supported by the community in which they live. Money will go back to being a tool for the exchange of energy and to help growth, not a tool for enslavement.

We seek to create a community of individuals who live at a higher level of vibration, that of Love or above (528 on the Hawkins scale). The spiritual aspects of the book may also be possible. We can, already, recall past lives. Many people have various psychic abilities. In fact all people are capable of tapping into those abilities, but we've been trained to ignore them and to think ESP is a freakish accident or just imaginary.

We live in exciting times, that's for certain. It's going to be rocky and challenging, but I believe that what awaits us on the other side is going to be amazing and wonderful.

I don't know where the "Fashion" comes from. Nothing fashionable about it....

This book should be a must read for everyone who is looking for a reason for being. Parallels to this life can be found in this book. I ordered the book again to do a second reading. I know I will find out more about myself when I do.

Book is great.. diet is great

Book is great .. diet is great .. however, book was not really in "very good" condition, it was very aged and yellow. But I really do love the diet .. it's foods I love to eat .. lots of fruits and veggies and although it's very low calorie the weekends are larger so I feel like I have some splurge days. 1st week .. down 3 lbs; on to week 2 now.

I started out on the original Hilton Head Metabolism Diet when a friend had suggested the Over-35. I was following the original diet and doing quite well with it. When I looked at the Over-35 diet I wasn't sure if it would be a good fit for me because it seemed a little harder to follow. But I have lost a total of 36 pounds and still have 15 to go. This diet is not for everyone but it has been the best and most successful for me. If you stick with it and stay focused you will succeed with this diet!!!!

Outstanding Diet

Eighteen years ago I took the "Hilton Head Metabolism Diet" and lost 38 lbs. in six weeks. I made the mistake of not completing the diet by sticking to the maintenance plan, and not exercising on a regular basis; thus I gained a great deal of that weight back. During the course of my regular medical check up, it was noted that my cholesterol level had risen to 207. I decided to go back on the diet and this time I would complete it. I bought the "Hilton Head over 35 Diet" this time, and 10 weeks later I went from 200 lbs. to 164, but best of all I had lowered my cholesterol level from 207 to 119. The worse part is I had to buy a bunch of new clothes, but The diet is a winner in my opinion. This time, I promised myself to COMPLETE IT! By the way, my wife also went on the same diet and has lost 32 lbs. and is only 8 lbs. from her goal.

Love, War, History--Another Demille Thriller

Nelson Demille consistently surprises me with his research, knowledge and laser paced action in his books. He just has a way of drawing me in to his characters with their transitional dialouge. I want to know them, care about them, and of course despise horrific villains. And as for action adventures, well, let's just say he moves a plot around like a Chinese acrobat with an inner ear problem!
In "By The Rivers of Babylon", we meet an extensive group of characters who begin a journey of peace for the Middleast. Two Concordes take off from Lod airport. A mysterious Lear jet invades their flying space. Not known to the pilots and passengers is the fact that a rebel Palestinian guerilla, Rish , has had bombs planted in the tails of each bird as they were being built a year before. Leading to an exciting kidnapping and forced landing.
What I enjoyed the most in this compelling book were the strategies of war. How different eras as well as nations handled nightime invasions for example. And how one must do anything to survive--anything. This seemed to be a pre-cursor to "The Lions Game" by DeMille. Similar themes, however, I was intrigued with the setting of Babylon. The history involved, the colorful descriptions of the Euphrates river, how Mesopatamia had been a glorious city and it's ironic downfall.
Highly recommended reading for the adventure lover.

A Powerhouse. Emotionally trying and finely crafted

Nelson Demille is a master. By the Rivers of Babylon is the most amazing thriller I have ever read. Once you are gripped by the plight of the passengers to the UN Conference you will never let them go. Their lives and deaths are visualized in full. Demille has given America a treat that should be enjoyed by all. It is Tom Clancy with the elitist confusing technology. It is James Patterson if he ever took a writing class. It is a gem.

Fast paced, action filled and hopefully not timeless

DeMille became one of my favorite authors with just one book, The Gold Goast, and oddly enough, that book is quite a bit different from the main genre of the rest of his work which tends to be more military/police/spy type thrillers. After reading several of his recent books, I finally got a chance to go back many years and read this one.

I'll get my one main complaint out of the way, it's the fact that the book has a plethora of characters and I wasn't ever really sure who I was rooting for specifically. As it turns out, the protagonist if you will, is probably the group as a whole, they banded together and survived as a group (even though some of the characters were lost). I guess I can accept that, although I prefer the strong male leads that dominate all the subsequent works by DeMille that I've read.

Even though written nearly three decades ago, not much has changed in world politics and this novel could probably take place in reality tomorrow with only a few minor changes. I often wonder if world security forces go through fiction, after all, Tom Clancy wrote about a pilot flying a jet plane into the White House and later when it was tried for real, everyone acted like "nobody could have ever imagined that". In any case, this book and DeMille's The Lions Game, both have airplanes being terrorized in different and unique ways, I hope someone is taking notice.

As for the why I give this book a strong recommendation, and why I'm sticking with five stars in spite of my complaint, it's a page turner, fast paced and well written, it has military science, love, war, hate and a whole lot more.

this is a great book for any woman

this is a great book for any woman, young or old, single or wretchedly or happily married, living alone or domesticated as a housecat, what ever. it is a guide to how to live, it is empowering. i read it, i'm in my mid twenties living alone and loving it (before and after reading!), i made my mother read it, i would thrust it into the hands of any friend including some gentlemen who i think could use a push in the right direction. the tone is hilarious, and the advice is timeless and i love her preoccupation with bathrobes and the opinions of the sheep. the anecdotes about so and so who lives x way are perfect this book is perfect.

I yelped with joy when I saw that this book has been reprinted...

...I've hunted down used copies for a half-dozen people, and now gift-giving will be a lot easier.

This book is more than just a primer for living alone happily; it's a primer for living happily and independently, no matter your age or marital status. While there's considerable "period" charm to be found in her stories and advice, this book is by no means a quaint period piece. It's packed full of (often very funny) practical wisdom that's just as vibrant for a woman living today as in the 1930s.

Be warned, though: one thing Miss Hillis cannot abide is self-pity, so this book offers several invigorating slaps to those who see loneliness as "an affliction sent by Providence like a hare-lip, instead of self-inflicted torture, like a hair shirt". Her advice on living a rich and full single life is so inspiring that it's a bit of a pity to find out that she eventually forsook "the pleasures of a single bed."

Highly, highly recommended.

firm, blunt, and very very funny

I join the other reviewers in celebrating the reprinting of this book. Following is (pretty much) a review I wrote on Amazon a few years ago for a used copy of this wonderful booK:

I found a copy of this book at an estate sale twenty years ago. At first I thought it would just be fun to have on my book shelf, but when I opened it up, the wisdom poured out of it.

Written for single women moving to New York in the 30s, the author does not hesitate to instruct, cajole and browbeat her reader. You MUST own four bed jackets. You MUST NOT have too much antique furniture.

And the overriding theme of the book: when you are single, you MUST look out for yourself, because no one else will, and you might as well look out for yourself really well.

Several of my friends read this book after I did. Based on its advice, one friend threw away all her worn out lingerie and started fresh. Another completely redecorated her house. Another started a financial savings plan. I began preparing much nicer meals for myself.

I don't think any of us has bought a bed jacket. But maybe you will, after reading this delightfully illustrated and charming book.

Patterson at his best - don't miss this one

Synopsis

In this, the thirteenth installment for super-cop Alex Cross, he finds himself once again returning to the streets to catch a diabolical duo of killers. Pursuing a genius serial killer who thrives on killing his victims in front of the largest crowds he can muster, Cross has his hands full. Known as the "Audience Killer," he delights in murdering famous people in broad daylight and on live television. He posts streaming video on the Internet, all the while taunting and threatening to make Cross his ultimate victim.

As if this is not enough to keep Cross and his partner Bree Stone busy, former colleague and friend Kyle Craig performs a dramatic prison break and is bent on exacting his revenge on Cross for putting him in maximum security prison for four long years.

Craig and the Audience Killer are destined to team up and make life short and miserable for the retired detective.The action is fast-paced and the suspense is palpable in this high-tech crime thriller.

My Two Cents Worth

After a couple of unremarkable efforts, Patterson is back. Double Cross is probably the best effort in the series of Cross novels.

The plot is complicated and boasts some ingenious twists and turns, but very well developed and engaging. Patterson sets a scorching pace and keeps the reader completely engrossed in the story line. The prose is cohesive and concise and he paints a compelling story.

Cross is still bigger-than-life, but unlike some of the previous books, the action doesn't suffer from lapses in reality. I found it refreshing to be completely consumed in a story for a change.

Double Cross delivered, big-time.

Double Cross is Double Boring..And I Am Being Polite

I love the Cross series but I don't know if James Patterson is pumping his novels out too fast or what but this Cross edition left me a little blah.

I purchased the Audiobook and while Peter J. Fernandez is great as usual, Michael Stuhlbarg left me a little blah. Personally I think Denis O' Hare should be stitch to Peter J. Fernandez due to their great vocal chemistry. The book doesn't possess the normal heart-beating-blood-racing excitement I usually experience while listening to Patterson's audio books. And while the narration plays a big part in selling the story Michael Stuhlbarg's vocals killed the sale...

Cross is once again being stalked by Kyle Craig and a shadow of Kyle who is killing publically. The Shadow of Kyle reasons behind his killings plus his methods of killing are about as exciting as watching my dog scratch her ear.

If you are a Cross/Patterson fan, steer clear of this edition. If you are wondering why I didn't write more about the storyline, it is because there really is no storyline... The Big Bad Wolf is a much better buy and your heart, mind and blood will race. In Your Honor...I dont think so...

Love anything by Patterson, he got me reading at age 72. That tells me a lot about a writer. I never knew what is was like to get lot in a book. Thankyou so much James Patterson.
