Elizabeth Peters is a prolific and successful writer of over 50 books. Peters' Curse is a Success

What could prompt gentlewoman Amelia (Peabody) Emerson to leave behind her young son and comfortable Victorian lifestyle to perform manual labor halfway around the world? - A love for Egyptology and a promising archeological site, of course. As the narrator and protagonist of Elizabeth Peters' The Curse of the Pharaohs, Peabody urges her husband, renowned archeologist Radcliffe Emerson, to accept Lady Baskerville's offer to head an excavation project outside Luxor. After leaving her son, affectionately nicknamed Ramses, with her in-laws, Peabody and Emerson are off to the land of the Pharaohs. .... .... Not being a fan of detective novels, I am surprised by my enjoyment of The Curse of the Pharaohs. I have never read a work by Elizabeth Peters before, but I am eager to acquire more of her novels. Peters' use of sandy Luxor and the mystery of the Ancient World breathes life into cliché whodunnits. Peters' characters are both suspicious and endearing. Particularly touching is the relationship between Peabody and Emerson. The reader envies their personal and professional partnership. The colorful descriptions and personal insights revealed by the narrator give each character a three-dimensional quality, no small feat in a narration. As a student of Egyptology, I can appreciate the knowledgeable references to Ancient Egypt throughout the novel. I think that both those experienced in and those new to Egyptian history will find the work fascinating. The mystery inherent in Egyptian tombs and pyramids serves as the perfect backdrop for a crime-solver. I fully enjoyed this novel and sincerely recommend it to all!

FUN FUN and more FUN!

The first book in the series seemed to be more of an introduction to the characters ~~ this book is more meatier and fun. This one has another mystery for Amelia to solve. This time, she and Emerson, her husband, traveled back to Egypt at the request of an old friend, Lady Baskerville. Her husband was found dead at a tomb of an old Pharaoh ~~ yet to be identified. Then his assistant was missing. The attacks keep coming and even the natives refused to work for her since they believed that the Tomb was cursed.

Once they arrived, Emerson and Amelia were busy fending off the attacks as well as solving the mystery of the tomb and the identity of the murderer. It's a faster-paced novel than her first one ~~ and more characters were introduced. Peters keep you guessing on who the identity of the murderer is till the end of the book.

This is another fun novel ~~ I highly recommend this one to anyone who loves to read mysteries. It's pure clean fun and speculation. It's also a perfect series to read over the summer as well (or anytime!).

Praise for Amelia Peabody! Indiana Jones, watch out!

Elizabeth Peters wrote this amazing novel with her usual genius and bubbling enthusiasm. My tremendous acclaiming to her as a master crime fictionist is unduly deserved. Extreme effort and care went into planning a superb, informed storyline. Amelia Peabody is a character never short of being as impetuous and headstrong as D'Artagnan before the storming of La Rochelle, but at the same time, she is full of hilarious acumen and perception, always shooting back with clever remarks and sharp retorts, and never once releasing hold of her immeasurably calm nature. Emerson, her charming, handsome husband, is the very picture of an impatient, devilishly arrogant Englishman, but behind doors, his tender sentimentality is an attribute I'm sure (ahem) Amelia greatly appreciates. The novel moved at a suspenseful pace, every turn and every bump leading up to a murderous climax. This book was masterful. I really enjoyed it. I advise it to anyone who loves to solve puzzles.

DO NOT MISS THIS!

Lauren Stillwell is living every woman's dream...she has a loving husband, a beautiful home and a great job. Lauren has it all until the day she surprises her husband for lunch and catches him with another woman. After Lauren casually asks her husband about his lunch, and he lies about it, she decides it's time for her to give him a taste of his own medicine.

Lauren planned on a "quickie," a night of sex with no strings. However, her night of passion turns deadly when she witnesses a brutal murder. Lauren must uncover the truth at all costs if she is to save her job, her marriage, and even her life.

I will not go into any more of the plot in order to keep the surprises intact, but trust me, when it's revealed what Lauren does for a living, who her one night stand is, and who the murderer is you will be floored and propelled to keep reading. Considering all this takes place in the first 60 pages, readers are treated to 300 more twist-filled pages that shock at every turn.

`The Quickie' is not only one of the best Patterson books, it's one of the best thrillers this year. There are so many plots twists and surprises even the most jaded readers will be thrilled

James Patterson has proven, once again, that he is THE master of an un-put-downable read. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE it's excellent.

A great Patterson book, the best in years!

Every James Patterson fan has a right to be skeptical when he releases a new book. Will it be any good or will it be too similar to many of the recent books he's released. I became hooked on Kiss the Girls and devoured every Patterson book I could find. Now, Patterson churns out 4-5 books a year. I keep reading because most are pretty good, only a few are horrible, and every once in awhile, Patterson captures some of the old magic. As for his most recent books, Cross was really good, Step on a Crack was horrendous, and the 6th Target could have been much better if it had told one big story instead of 3 small ones. I had no expectations when I picked up and begin reading "The Quickie." This book with the strange title had me hooked from the beginning and trying to make time to read this book as fast as I could.

Lauren is married to Paul. One day, she drives downtown hoping to surprise him at lunch. She spots him going into a hotel with a georgeous young blonde. This betrayal tears her apart and of course allows her to justify having her own fling with a coworker. That's as much of the plot as I'll give away. Let's just say that once Lauren has the quickie, an amazing amount of things go wrong. Lauren is faced with many decisions and dilemmas that force her to decide what really matters in her life.

The plot hooked me from the beginning and carried me through the novel. Still, as I read I kept hoping the characters would be worth caring for. For awhile, none of the characters are sympathetic. Is Lauren good or bad? What about her husband Paul? What about Scott Thayer, the man Lauren has the affair with? But don't worry, Patterson (and random co-author) know what they are doing. The book hurls twists and turns at you to where you are never sure about Lauren's plans to survive the disaster she created by having that one "quickie." There aren't any cheap plot gimmicks used either. This is a straight up thriller.

This is the best stand-alone Patterson book I've read in a long time. Honeymoon and Beach Road were bad, while Lifeguard was pretty good. I recommend this book to all Patterson fans who may have given up on the author. If you are considering reading Patterson for the first time, I recommend starting at the beginning of the Cross books or read this one. You won't be disappointed.

Entertaining, but somewhat flawed...

The only James Patterson book I have ever read is Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas. I have never read any of his thrillers, which is what he's known for. I picked up The Quickie, co-authored by Michael Ledwidge, on a whim while I was browsing the new paperbacks section at the bookstore. Even though I wouldn't call this novel brilliant or clever, it is definitely entertaining and will probably enable me to pick up other Patterson thrillers in the future. Lauren Stillwell's world shatters when she sees her husband sneaking off during lunchtime to meet with another woman. How could he do that to her after all they've been through together? But instead of confronting him and throwing a tantrum, she does something else -- she evens the score by sleeping with a colleague she's had a crush on for a long time. Little had she known the can of worms she has opened by doing such a thing. She catches her husband killing her lover, and now she has to do the sort of unethical things she thought she would never do -- trample with evidence, lie to people -- in order to cover her husband's tracks and save her job, not to mention avoid involving the media at all cost. But things get more complicated for Lauren when twists, turns and flooring discoveries and events unfold.

This novel lives by its name. It is definitely a quickie and I wasn't bored throughout the riveting read. The chapters are very short, something I noticed in Suzanne's Diary for Nicholas, which make reading this book a breeze. The characters are all well-defined. Many reviewers complained that the characters, especially the heroine, are all flawed and have unlikable qualities. I for one appreciate reading a book whose heroine isn't a perfect, moral, Law and Order type, but a flawed and at times selfish person who is looking after herself and her loved ones. (For no matter how much she claims she is also looking after Scott's family's best interest, her motives are more selfish than that.) The things she allows to happen and the things that occur for omitting her husband's crime are awful, but I felt for Lauren and her dilemma. The somewhat ironic twist at the end is great, but the resolution is glossed over and is tied up a little too neatly for my liking. I won't go into further detail because I don't want to post any spoilers, but I'm sure that those who have read this novel will agree with me on that account. All in all, The Quickie is entertaining from beginning to end. It's nothing special, but it serves its purpose as a good thriller. This is the perfect spring/summer "quickie."

Good for a Basic Introduction to the Law of Attraction and NLP

This book combines two main ideologies, but in a very basic way: The Law of Attraction and Neuro Linguistic Programming.

The Law of Attraction describes us as a magnet and our thoughts and feelings attract from the Universe the equivalent of those thoughts or feelings. For example, if you constantly are in a bad mood and consistently wonder why you don't make enough money, then by the Law of Attraction, you are attracting more of "not making enough money" and "feeling bad".

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a very intriguing topic. NLPs creator's Richard Bandler and John Grinder created NLP as a way of describing methods to create wanted behaviors in ourselves through the way we think "Neuro" and the use of our speech "Linguistic", thus "Programming" ourselves in the way we want.

Here are some thoughts to help you in your decision with buying this book:

1. This book is very much an INTRODUCTION book combining those two main principles: the "Law of Attraction" and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming).

2. If you have read any "Law of Attraction" books or NLP books, you will most likely have already read the information and probably in more detail.

3. If you are looking for in-depth, two books that come to mind that cover the two principles well: "Ask and It is Given" covers the Law of Attraction extremely well, and "Awaken the Giant Within" covers popular NLP well. FYI: If you can find the out of print books "The Structure of Magic" or its follow up, both written by Richard Bandler and John Grinder (the actual creators of NLP), then you will have learned from the original sources of NLP before the ideologies were modified by others.

4. If you have not read any of these types of books, you will most likely enjoy and find the information useful as a first step to more information.

5. A personal complaint is it is a short book with a lot of white space in which each page is not completely filled and appears to be repetitive.

Let me start off by saying that The Law of Attraction is one of those rare books that can instantly change your life. It's not hype, because I tried the exercises listed in this book and had observable results within the hour. More on my personal experience a bit later.

You may be wondering What is the Law of Attraction? Simply put, the Law of Atraction states: "I attract to my life whatever I give my energy, focus, and attention to, whether wanted or unwanted". Everything in the world is made up of energy which vibrates at a certain level. When someone has "bad vibes", they are sending off negative energy. Have you ever heard the phrases like attracts like, birds of a feather flock together, and misery loves company? These popular phrases are evidence of the Law of Attraction. There are other phrases and words that describe this universal law, including:

*Serendipity
*Synchronicity
*Fate
*Karma
*Luck
*Meant to be

According to author Michael Losier The Law of Attraction responds to whatever vibration you are offering, by giving you more of what you are vibrating. In our bodies, our "vibration" is translated as feelings. When we feel enthusiastic, loving, confident, or content, we are vibrating positively. When we feel sad, stressed, angry, or ashamed, we are vibrating negatively. This is why viewing negative events causes us to feel badly. Likewise, witnessing beauty or acts of kindess causes us to feel good.

It has been said that we "create our own reality". Regardless of whether or not we are doing it intentionally, we draw circumstances and people towards us that match our vibration (feelings). We are constantly thinking thoughts, and those thoughts produce feelings (vibration). The Law of Attraction teaches us how to deliberately attract more of what we want (as opposed to unconsciously attracting what we don't).

What Losier shows us is that how we feel about something--and what we focus upon--attracts situations and people with matching vibration. He then gives us tools to raise our vibration, and attract our ideal situation--which is exciting! The three-step formula for deliberate attraction is:

*Identify your desire
*Raise your vibration
*Allow it

The instructions are clear and simple, and can be performed quickly. Losier provides two case studies, and guides you through the three-step process with worksheets. There is even a webpage listed in the book where you can download additional worksheets.

I've read other Law of Attraction books, but something seemed to be missing. I found the process frustrating and disheartening, quite frankly, and gave up on the concept (despite knowing there was truth to it). Losier provides the missing piece through his Clarity Through Contrast worksheet, as well as the Desire Statement. Both of these exercises focus our attention on an ideal, so it's easy to get excited about attracting what you desire. I think this is why so many people have trouble with affirmations: you don't feel good about saying a situation is one way, when it is really another. So while positive thinking alone may help with redirecting thoughts, they don't "blow our fan", as Losier is wont to say, until those thoughts are accompanied by positive feelings.

~My Personal Experience~

After I read this book (it's a quick read), I printed out the Worksheets online, and completed them as instructed. I knew immediately what I wanted to attract even before I finished the book: my ideal experience writing my first novel. Up until a few days ago, I had experienced huge resistance to writing my novel. I'd get sick to my stomach and procrastinate because I dreaded sitting down and writing. (This process has been going on for well over a year, with my procrastination often lasting weeks or months). Yet, I had an outline, plot direction, interesting characters, and unblocked creativity. In fact, when I actually did write, it went quite well.

So what was wrong with me?! This "creative angst" has been "hanging over me", and I couldn't figure out why my willpower wasn't enough.

I did all the worksheets in the book, which didn't take very long. Within an hour, I sat down and wrote over 500 words of my novel with complete ease. The next day, I quickly read over my Desire Statement, and wrote another 500+ words...with complete ease. It's so easy now, that I'm wondering where the dread went! If I feel low level anxiety, I read my Desire Statement, have an influx of peace, and the writing process is as easy as can be. I'm totally amazed. My husband has also read the book, and has done a Desire Statement on finances. And, we've resurrected our "wish box" (now a blessings jar) that we used to use regularly.

As you can see, The Law of Attraction has started a new and exciting chapter in our lives! I'm still in awe that I can walk over to my dining table, and begin writing immediately with complete ease and clear focus.

In case you haven't guessed, I highly recommend this book--especially if you want to attract more of what you desire...and less of what you don't.

My highest recommendation: buy this book!

In an effort to make my point as clear as possible, I'm going to be as brief as possible:

Out of all the books, tapes, and resources that I've purchased on the topic of "creating your ideal life", Michael Losier's "Law of Attraction" is the absolute best "nuts-and-bolts" treatment I've ever read. Period.

My introduction to the book is actually an example of the law of attraction at work. I was on a plane flying to Cancun, Mexico and saw a gentleman across the aisle reading his book. I noted the title and the author's name and made a note to purchase it when I returned home.

Less than 48 hours later, I was actually SITTING AT DINNER with Mr. Losier and his assistant. They were actually in Cancun for the same business conference I was.

Of course, we can say this is a "coincidence" but that doesn't really explain anything. It's just another word we use to describe the law of attraction in our everyday language.

What Losier teaches in this book is NOT how to become someone who attracts results. You're already doing that. Instead, he teaches you -- in plain, English with no weird jargon -- how to become a DELIBERATE attractor and start consciously attracting more of the things you want out of life and less of the things that you don't want.

This book has my highest recommendation. If I couldn't get another copy, I wouldn't take $1,000 for mine.

CAYCE ALWAYS GAVE GOD THE GLORY . . .

This is another good Cayce book, and it's unfair to bash this very spiritual man without a through study of his words. If we read what Cayce specifically said regarding Jesus Christ, we see how every reading he gave in trance, as in all areas of his waking life, he never once denied Christ or his divinity or his love for us. Rather, Cayce often said that nothing we do in any lifetime is as important as loving God and our neighbor as ourselves. In one very powerful group of readings, he taught that by his suffering and death, Christ actually took upon himself all our worst karma and thus freed us from that endless Karmic-Wheel-of-Rebirth Hindu's long to be done with. If we accept this salvation of being released by Christ's sacrifice from the necessity of subsequent births, but choose nonetheless to reincarnate, we do so as servant-souls: that is, our lives become a gift we're not obliged to make. Mother Teresa is a good example of such an evolved soul who came back not for her own spiritual gain, but to lead humanity closer to God. When people questioned Cayce about the safest place to be living during the coming earthquakes/tidal waves, he would reply, "Why do you worry so about where your body will be? You should be more concerned about where you are in your relationship with HIM every day!"

Useful workbook-like exercises

I don't take the Bible literally, and I don't mindlessly swallow everything Cayce says either. But I liked the exercises, which more or less focus on a "resonance" method -- that is, do the pictures, time periods, etc. resonate with you.

Thomas Keneally began his writing career in 1964 and has publishedthirty-one novels since. They include "Schindler s List", which won the Booker Prize in 1982, "The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith", "Gossip from the Forest", and "Confederates", " "all of which were shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and the "New York Times"bestselling"The Daughters of Mars". He has also written several works of nonfiction, including his boyhood memoir, "Homebush Boy", " The Commonwealth of Thieves", " "and "Searching for Schindler." He is married with two daughters and lives in Sydney, Australia.

Keneally?

Even the best writers can't consistently create gems.
I'll give most books a chance. If an author can't hook me in 50 pages I'll give it up, but I think this is the first time I've ever I abandoned a book 7/8th of way through.
The book never gels. There's no trajectory. It bumps and hobbles; occasionally very descriptive; occasionally insightful. I kept waiting for momentum, but it never takes off. I was never enticed to care about the characters. Even close to the end I kept waiting for some coalescence of purpose but it didn't happen.

Can't comment on whether he does bring it together in the end because I never got there.

Memorable fiction or merely propoganda?

It is plain from the few reviews posted here that some extreme opinions are held regarding this book. The reviewer who faults Keneally for a one sided picture of the Eretrian war is quite correct that the book is not a balanced account of the long and complex conflict. But then the book is not reportage, it is fiction, and as such - a story told from the point of view of a journalist with no prior knowledege of the war - it is perfectly reasonable. He takes sides and sympathizes with his hosts. He demonizes their enemies. Is this accurate history? No. Is it a great story? Yes.
Keneally is a writter of consumate skill whose characters and settings have a sense of heightened reality. This book, whatever it's factual failings, is vivid, powerful and moving. I knew nothing about the Eretrian conflict myself when I read the novel, and was so moved by it that I was motivated to do a lot of follow up research on the subject. If Keneally meant for the book to be propoganda, then shame on him (though, if so, it is most uncommonly good propoganda). If he didn't, then the accuracy of the book is of issue only to those who have already taken sides and can't appreciate a fiction that takes an opposing point of view. And I really believe that anyone who is moved by this book will at least do, as I did, enough additional study to realize that Keneally's story is only part of the Eretrian story - one that deserves to be known.

Predictable adoration from a Guerilla Groupie

The book blames everyone save the Eritreans who in 1960 were ourselves split in 4 different camps, most vulnerable of which were the highland Christians late to emerge as "liberators" overwhelming the majority Muslims and other minorities.
Kenealy was predictable as a journalist of the age in his inability to report the facts without delving into the adorative fiction one side or the other chose to feed him.
For the uninitiated this passes as Gospel, who after all would doubt the author of "Schindler's List".

Kenealy neglects to mention even at the earlier stages, the EPLF's and later Eritrea's stormy relations with Sudan, Djibouti and its own Muslim population. The liberation struggles of the Akele Guzai, Bilen, Saho, Afar and the fight both for suffrage and self determination of Eritreas forgotten Muslim populace are ignored.

The "best book" from the "best man" of nutrition!

WOW! What a book. One and a half years ago I didn't know much about Dr. Mindell. I found that this book the "Vitamin Bible" is translated into 30 languages and sells in 54 different countries. It was written in 1979 and still sells 10,000 copies every single week. Once again, WOW! What is even more amazing is that Dr. Mindell has now introduced his own line of Vitamins and Minerals using his 30+ years of research. I was lost in the health food stores as to what vitamins to take and to the quality of those vitamins. Now, the man of nutrition, the one and only Dr. Earl Mindell, has taken the guess work out of it. This book alone is all the credibility that I needed, not to mention all of his other best sellers. His products are definitely worth taking a look at, as they come with a 60-day unconditional empty bottle guarantee. I know I'm supposed to give a review of his book, "The Vitamin Bible", but really his book and his supplements go hand in hand. His book(s) and products has made a tremendous impact on my health.

Sweet Sleep now

I am grateful for Dr. Mindell and his great Vitamin Bible. I would find myself sleeping less and less and becoming more and more fatigued. I t was Dr Mindell" suggestion in this book that showed me the light in the darkness (pun not intended). By following his sugggestions I am now a sweet sleeper. I am delightfully suprised to learn that Dr. Mindell is now personally formulating a vitamins supplements line exclusively for one company. I am excited to know that I can have access to them. Along with the vitamin bible My life will be superb. long live the Vitamin Bible

The trials and tribulations of both patients and medicos include suspenseful operations, natural deaths, murder and suicide ("All this time he was calling out for help and I didn't hear him."). Even Sheldon's typically careful research seems forced and out-of-place: tidbits about African tribal lore and medical terms and procedures only interrupt the bathos. Sheldon's latest begins with the trial of a San Francisco doctor, Paige Taylor, who in 1995 is accused of killing a patient to gain access to a large inheritance. The narrative then backs up to 1990 and chronicles the journeys of Taylor, Honey Taft, and Kat Hunter, the only three females in a group of new residents at Embarcadero County Hospital. The women, who quickly become roommates and friends, face long hours, a frenetic work pace, and unwanted advances from male colleagues. Kat becomes involved in unsavory underworld activities. Honey's questionable medical skills are overlooked by the male administrators, who value her other services. Paige tries to forget a lost love. This readable and entertaining story ends with a dramatic, if unbelievable, flourish. Recommended for public libraries, where the demand will surely be high.
