A TREAT FOR SOUTHERN HISTORY BUFFS!

Ripley doesn't just write about the South; she takes you there. Her descriptions of New Orleans, homes and even the shops are so vivid one can truly live in each moment along with Mary MacAlistair, the lively character the story evolves around. Her life takes so many twist and turns it's amazing to realize that it all happens in the space of a year. From the age of sixteen to seventeen she's experienced more then most would over the space of a lifetime. She jaunts through the adversity in her life with a very uplifting attitude until she briefly determines it's a dog-eat-dog world she resides in. However, events unfold and she again finds the 'chin up' frame of mind that has made her the delightful character that is Mary. I enjoyed this book as much or more as "Charleston" and "Leaving Charleston". I did feel that the ending unfurled a bit to quickly and lacked the build up that other important parts of the book offered. Overall, it was a most enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.

I remarried, had more children, and continued to record and release more music. I continued to live my life. And while I can never discount the time I spent with Big, I've never felt the need to live in the past.

But sometimes, I still find myself thinking about Big being rushed the hospital, and I break down in tears.

It's not just because we hung up on each other during what would be our last telephone conversation. And it's not because I am raising our son, a young man who has never known his father.

It's partly all of those things. But mainly it's because he wasn't ready to go. His debut album was called Ready to Die. But in the end, he wasn't. Big never got a chance to tell his story. It's been left to others to tell it for him. In making the decision to tell my own story, it means that I've become one of those who can give insight to who Big really was. But I can only speak on what he meant to me.

Yet I also want people to understand that although he was a large part of my life, my story doesn't actually begin or end with Big's death. My journey has been complicated on many levels. And since I am always linked to Big, there are a lot of misconceptions about who I really am.

I hope that in reading my words, there is inspiration to be found. Perhaps you can duplicate my success or achieve where I have failed. Maybe you can skip over the mistakes I've made. Use my life as an example-of what to do and in some cases, what not to do.

It's not easy putting your life out there for the masses. But I've decided I'll tell my own story. For Big. For my children. And for myself.

Faith Tells All!

I enjoyed reading Faith's bio. I think she really opened up her heart, and allowed the readers to get to know her for her. She has not really been recognized outside of her marriage to the late Notorious Big, but I think her book allows readers to see the individual. Faith is very talented. I was sad to see that she had suffered so much abuse and issues with multiple abortions, but the fact that she shared it in her book reveals that she is indeed human, and not exempt from making bad decisions.
I think Faith showed us another side of her late husband. Big did have a loving side to him, but he also struggled with being faithful to her.
Overall, the book is a must read. I am glad that I purchased it. I do believe that she was careful in her comments about Lil Kim, and some of the drama that was going on with the East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry.

I loved the author's voice: authentic, emotional, candid, and courageous. I feel she was true to her mission in telling the truth for her late husband, her children, and herself. An awesome autobiography!!

Surprisingly Great Memoir

Honestly when you think of Faith Evans you automatically think of Biggie Smallz but she's did a good job of telling the story of that marriage yet showing how her life was more than just being Big's wife. Faith was one of my fav artist in the late 90's #2 to Mary J so I enjoyed learning about her life, I had no idea she was so hardcore (weed habits, fights, abortions). The best thing about the book was the narrative style, the co-author did a great job of taking Faith's story and weaving it into a non-stop read. I haven't finished a book this fast (3 days) in a long time. The book has made me an even bigger Faith fan and I can't wait for another album from her.

Definitely a helpful guide through the grieving process

Candy Lightner's book was the most helpful guide through grief that I read after my own loss of a 14 year-old daughter in 1988. Here I am, 13 years later, still remembering passages from the book. A few months after my child's death, and feeling mired in a depression I had no idea how to lift, I bought or borrowed every book on grief I could get my hands on. This one stands out for its honesty and focuses on the fact that there are disparate ways of grieving, none of them wrong, and that those left to deal with the death of a loved one never "recover" as from an illness, but rather incorporate the experience into his or her life. The loss becomes, as one father described it (paraphrased) not a turbulent river, but a meandering stream that ebbs and flows through the remainder of one's life. I completely recommend this book, and in fact bought many copies which I have given away over the years. There are many interesting facts brought out in the book, for example that 80% of all marriages end in divorce after the death of a child. Although perhaps most helpful to those who have lost a child, the book has much to offer anyone learning to cope after the death of a spouse, relative, or dear friend.

After the death of my spouse

I started reading this book about 2 months after the death of my spouse at the age of 53 and after almost 6 years of marriage and a horrific death from a nerve disease. I never really knew what grief was until his death. Nothing seemed to help until I read Candy's book. I never realized how cathartic such as death could be. Candy provides such an insight into how I needed to not only pass through the sorrow and pain but into a totally changed life. She helped me understand how many more facets there were to what I was feeling. This is a wonderful compassionate work. I know Her daughter must be smiling down from heaven in pride on her mother today.

Making Sense of the Incomprehensible: the loss of a child

My beautiful, dearest son, David, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 2 1/2 . Chemotherapy & radiation left him retarded and epileptic. For nearly 33 years, we battled his epilepsy. One morning, in 2009, he was gone. He passed away from an overwhelming seizure that shut down all of his systems in an instant. He had beaten cancer, only to lose his life to the side/effects of the cure.
David's survival was never taken for granted, but his loss was shocking. We had done everything to keep him alive, but it wasn't enough.

Our whole family was devastated. We've tried to help each other (I have six other children), but, each person grieves in his/her own way. And, there is a point where children can no longer help a mom. I have spent the last two years meeting every mother I could who has lost a child. I was trying to figure out how to survive this unthinkable loss. I read probably forty books on grieving.. I saw every film I could showing the loss of a child. Time has helped.

But, recently I read "Giving Sorrow Word" and it had a profound effect on me. I felt like the author was speaking directly to me. Candance Lightner explained to me how and why I was feeling the way I was. She very clearly described all aspects of grief. I learned it was normal to feel insane. I learned the kind of people to avoid; to ask for what I need; to understand I would never, ever get over this loss, but that the rest of my life would be tolerable. Candance wrote from her heart and from what she learned from speaking with and researching what others say about grief. Of all the books I have read, this is the best book on grieving and "recovery" because it is clear, honest, and even hopeful.

The only other book I would recommend beside "Giving Sorrow Words," is "A Broken Heart Still Beats", because it has excerpts from great writers - Mark Twain, Edgar Alan Poe, etc - who've written about losing their own children. Reading what amounts to poetry by brilliant writers was illuminating and comforting. But, it was "Giving Sorrow Words" that gave me the greatest clarity. - Pepper Edmiston, California

In this book based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning series of articles for the Philadelphia Inquirer , journalist Weiner probes the way the Pentagon has used secret budgets to fund huge military programs. This has grown to the point that there are now more than 100 multimillion- and multibillion-dollar weapons systems, many of them nuclear weapons designed to fight and win World Wars III and IV, built without the awareness of the public or even the Congress. Weiner takes a close look at programs such as the Stealth bomber and provides fascinating detail from Congressional testimony. The thesis of the book--that secrecy in government military programs is antithetical to democracy--is well documented and hugely important. As the Cold War draws to a close and military budgets come under attack, the public and Congress may tend to forget the defense establishment's inclination toward secrecy and self-perpetuation. Weiner's book serves as a timely reminder that this would be unwise. Highly recommended.

Tim Weiner is the author of five books. "Legacy of Ashes", his history of the CIA, won the National Book Award. His journalism on secret government programs received the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting. As a correspondent for The New York Times, he covered war and terrorism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Sudan, and other nations. He directs the Carey Institute's nonfiction residency program in upstate New York and teaches as an Anschutz Distinguished Fellow in American Studies at Princeton.

Shameful facts of secret spending of the Pentagon.

This excellent book should be read by every USA taxpayer, civilian and military. Mr. Weiner, with an excellent bibliography, tells it like it is. Without barriers, he gives historical, verifiable--if you desire--facts on the irresposible mechanisms used by USA presidents to advance an empire through the throats of many countries--beginning with the USA itself, and justify murders, lies, frauds, thefts, violations of the USA Constitution, through the military and paramilitar civil agencies such as the CIA, based on the very doubtful and euphemistic principle that almost anything is a threat to USA national security. Excellent book. Written almost 20 years ago it is as updated as if it had been written yesterday.

Money talks! And does it have a story to tell!

Blank Check is a meticulously researched and chilling account of how the Cold War led the nation into a frenzy of spending based on fear and propaganda. The book spans 40 years of government development and National crises from the viewpoint of a checkbook. However, the fact that the book was published before the fall of the Soviet Union means that, to a modern reader, the stories told are a frightening look at times gone by rather than a relevant commentary on modern life. Also, with no central character to latch onto the book, while conscience stirring, is not necessarily compelling. That said, revelations in this book about the government's outright violation of the constitution in the name of National Security still have the ability to leave a reader appalled.

Relevant to Modern DoD Ethics Issues Including Private Contractors

Fantastic book and interesting how useful reading an "older" investigation of the defense department black budget and associated misappropriations/abuses can be in easily tying the very same ethical/strategic defense issues to the more recent "Spies for Hire" by Tim Shorrock (also a fantastic read).

The similarities regarding decades long ethical issues with regard to the lack of oversight within black budget is almost overwhelming while simultaneously intriguing and disheartening: no concrete evidence, whatsoever, that Congressional or other government oversight of black budget operations or DoD contracting, in general, has improved. In fact, following 9/11 the situation, if anything, financial and ethical accountability has actually degraded.

This timeless, still-compelling book provides that much-needed historical perspective yet also begs the question: over the next 10 or 20 years is there any reason to believe money will be spent, appropriately, to truly and measurable advance US National Security with concrete accountability for those instances where projects and leaders fail to act responsibly...at great expense to the American taxpayers actually undermining US defense and war fighter readiness?

Incredible - yet devastating

This is the incredible story of Gray Wolf, a man tortured by the devastation of his people, of his land, and of their way of life. Beginning as a young boy, the story chronicles the hardships he endured while he navigated a life fraught with danger as the whites moved into his territory and began the deliberate annihilation of all Indians. A man raised to believe in honor and integrity; and, above all, to protect his people. He is raised to hate the white man. Full of anger and hate, he sets out to destroy the enemy, and in doing so, he comes to a state where he doesn't recognize the man he becomes. When his own chief, Red Cloud, a man he admired above all others, finally makes a treaty with the Whites, Gray Wolf, full of anger, leaves his people and travels across the nation to Apache land. There he finds hope in a secret meadow, and eventually, happiness fills his soul. It is then that he leaves to find himself a wife. For companionship, comfort, love and children. He is filled with a hope that maybe he can truly live in freedom. But his hopes are dashed over and over again. The woman he takes as wife, a woman he loves with all his heart, will test his love repeatedly. And will devastate him time and again.

I will not lie. This story does not have a happy ending. How could it? Every time I think upon it, I cry. Yet this story should be heard and should be required reading by every member of congress and by every student. We cry out about the Holocaust - how is this different? Where is the justice for the Indian Nation?

This is a true story, written by the great-granddaughter of Gray Wolf, as told by himself and those that knew him, prior to his death at the age of 107. Thank you Del, for returning to your great-grandfather and recording his words.

The author is the granddaughter of a Lakota who related an account of white atrocities on Indians that he witnessed. It is hard to separate fictional from historical accounts, but there is little need to exaggerate what actually happened. Too many similar stories have occured before, one for the Blackfeet is particularly memorable.[[ASIN:0143106511 Fools Crow (Penguin Classics}}
The effect on the protagonist is to create a warrior full of hatred for whites and an unsatisfied thirst for revenge.
However, at one point he recognizes the wretched soul he has become and leaves the Northern Plains for the Southwest. Here he finds love with a white woman that may be redeeming, but she puts him through constant tests to see if he has become the man he dreamed of being.

Under the chapter on Table Manners, she notes "the inevitable slippage of spaghetti from the fork back onto the plate is Nature's way of controlling human piggishness" and suggests "a quick motion of the wrist, such as one uses to shake down a thermometer, will remove excess ketchup" from French fries. From common courtesy and proper attire to the etiquette of weddings, Martin knows right from wrong and sensible from rude. But this is no prissy, preachy tome. Miss Manners is very funny and has impressive insight into life.

Not Just for Table Manners

This is most certainly NOT Emily Post at work here.
Miss Manners is excrutiatingly correct and absolutely thorough in this best of all the entries in her series of books. But even if you don't care about Proper Behavior, this book is a great read. Miss Manners is a great writer; her work is pointed, sharp and funny. She has the gift of making me laugh out loud as I read about matters that I don't even care much about, and hardly a chapter went by without my learning something useful.
Someone wisely chose to include letters written to her column; it's in her byplay with her readers that she shines brightest. A great read for any fans of fine, tight column writing, no matter what the subject.

There is no one quite like Ms. Martin

If you don't mind reading someone highly opinionated (and why else would anyone write books?) you may be very amused and greatly helped by all of Judith Martin's books. (Much of her world is strictly black-and-white, but that pertains mostly to tuxedos and wedding invitations.) Rather than sap the originality out of life, I find her etiquette highlights it. She shows us ways, through etiquette, we can have some common ground rules for the mundane and the messy, and then get on with our lives.

This book was a complete waste of time and money. "Miss Manners" appeared to be more concerned with her own amusement than informing the bride. I was also turned off by the attitude of the author for the modern wedding. If there were minus stars I would have given it a -3. Don't waste your money on this one.

This is the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1965. The first edition had approximately one thousand pages in a single volume. This latest volume has almost three thousand pages in 3 volumes which is a fair measure of the pace at which the discipline of physical metallurgy has grown in the intervening 30 years.

Almost all the topics previously treated are still in evidence in this version which is approximately 50% bigger than the previous edition. All the chapters have been either totally rewritten by new authors or thoroughly revised and expanded, either by the third-edition authors alone or jointly with new co-authors. Three chapters on new topics have been added, dealing with dry corrosion, oxidation and protection of metal surfaces; the dislocation theory of the mechanical behavior of intermetallic compounds; and (most novel) a chapter on polymer science for metallurgists, which analyses the conceptual mismatch between metallurgists' and polymer scientists' way of looking at materials. Special care has been taken throughout all chapters to incorporate the latest experimental research results and theoretical insights. Several thousand citations to the research and review literature are included in this edition. There is a very detailed subject index, as well as a comprehensive author index.

The original version of this book has long been regarded as the standard text in physical metallurgy and this thoroughly rewritten and updated version will retain this status.

How does one review The Bible? The editors, R.W. Cahn and P. Haasen, have succeeded in producing the Physical Metallurgy equivalent. This is the third revision of the famous work and it represents a major extension to the previous edition with at least 50% more material crammed into two very substantial volumes. It is really impossible to do justice to the many fine contributions that are collected together here... . This work must surely have wide appeal. No serious academic or research worker in fields connected with physical metallurgy should be without these volumes... .

Advanced and comprehensive

Some of the other reviews given here are of Physical Metallurgy by Peter Haasen, which is a single volume, 375-page metallurgy textbook. Amazon is lumping the reviews of this single volume text together with a three volume, 3000-page, virtual encyclopedia edited by Robert W. Cahn and Peter Haasen. My review is of the three-volume set.

This is an advanced text, in three volumes, made up of 32 authoritative articles. It is the fourth edition of a series began in 1960's, which can fairly be considered as the bible of physical metallurgy. This book is very comprehensive, covering all aspects of physical metallurgy, i.e., crystal structure, microstructure, metallurgical thermodynamics, alloys, phase diagrams, phase transformations, diffusion, dislocation theory, solidification, sintering, mechanical properties, metal fatigue, fracture and other topics, including a metallurgists guide to polymers. (The polymer section, while not metallurgy, falls under the topic of materials selection, which is often covered in metallurgy texts.) The only areas that are not covered are those, such as electronic properties, which are generally classed as solid-state physics. This book (the fourth edition) presents a comprehensive view of physical metallurgy as of the mid 1990's, with articles written by experts in their subspecialties. They are advanced and are suitable for practicing metallurgists and graduate students. Each is in effect a 100-page advanced textbook. The book is a great reference source and each section could be used as an advanced course text. However, I think that this series of three volumes is too advanced and detailed for those who only want a brief overview of physical metallurgy.

I think that the very high price for these three volumes requires some comment. In effect, one is getting 32 short textbooks and on that basis the price is not exorbitant. Many of the chapter authors have written texts on the same subject as their chapter. Many of these books, while generally longer, are priced in the range of $100. If you want this series primarily for a single subject, say, metallurgical thermodynamics or metal fatigue you would probably be better off buying a text on that subject. Buying the whole series makes sense for a library or for the business use of several employees.

I have ordered two sets of three volume set book of 'Physical Metallurgy' Physical Metallurgy, Fourth Edition (Three Volume Set) last November. Last week Friday two books from one set (vol. 1 & 2) were delivered to my address, where are the rest of FOUR books? The service has been very slow and incomplete, please confirm the delivery from Amazon was proper.
