The End

The Chic Shall Inherit the Earth is the final book in the An All About Us series by Shelley Adina. I was first introduced to these realistic and enjoyable characters in book three of the series, Be Strong & Curvaceous. Ms. Adina must be a kid at heart because each one embodies the emotion and attitude of a typical teenager. It happens to be their last year at Spencer Academy, and while academia may be ending there are still some problems that need solving.

Lissa Mansfield has connected with some great girls since starting Spencer. Gillian, Carly, and Shani have been through some things, but the best thing is their weekly prayer circle, where they have all connected with God on another level. But for Lissa the biggest test of her faith comes when an unexpected situation places her in a position she really did not think about. Lissa will need to reach out to Vanessa, the one person who never had anything pleasant to say to her. Will Vanessa be able to see Lissa in another light?

With high school coming to an end, the teenagers need to plan for their future. Not all of Lissa's friends have their minds made up when it comes to their choice of colleges. Carly and Gillian are feeling it the most, because they have more to consider than what the schools have to offer. What will they do?

I truly enjoyed Ms. Adina's writing, so much so I want to pick up the other books in the series that I have not yet had a chance to read. Even though this is a series each book can stand on its own because Adina does a great job of including pieces from the prior stories. I recommend The Chic Shall Inherit the Earth to teens and their parents.

Graduation: We'll Be Friends Forever

*Sigh* All good things must come to an end and we all have to grow up and move on right? That's what the girls at Spencer Academy have to face in this last book the All About Us series. Senior year has come and everyone is preparing to go their separate ways. The five friends will be soon split up and must get ready for a life without each other. The narrator for the final book is Lissa, which is fitting as she was the focus of the first book, therefore bringing the storyline full circle. I have never felt this series to be preachy. While the characters are Christians and do talk about their faith openly, they never portray the typical stereotype of a Christian. Instead the girls act like normal teenage girls, enjoying clothes, celebrities, boys and just hanging out with each other.

I think my favorite part of the story was seeing Vanessa's transformation. Without giving away any spoilers, I'll just say that it's totally amazing. I have not being able to stand her since the first book in the series, and while she still isn't my favorite character, I have a lot more respect for her now. Also I really admire Lissa for hanging in there and toughing it out with her. I don't think I would have been able to have the patience. I was also glad to see that this situation was treated realistically. Things aren't done happily or with a joyful heart. There's a lot of pain and reluctance here which I would totally expect from teen characters. It's another credit to Adina's fabulous style of writing. I was also secretly glad as to the romance bit at the end. It was a long time coming, but I'm happy to see all parties excited over it.

I'm so sad that this series is now over. I have grown to adore these girls and have loved reading their stories over the course of the series. This is have been one of my favorite YA series to read and definitely one I have been recommending to any YA reader I have come in contact with. As always, I applaud the series for it's multi-cultural cast and the approach to broadening the reader's cultural outlook. I have no idea what Shelley's next books are going to be about but if they are anything like this series, I know I will definitely be picking it up. If you are have been following this series, this is a fond farewell that is done extremely well. If you are new to this series, pick up the first book and I guarantee you will be hooked.

Well-written, and I really liked the Vanessa bit

"The Chic Shall Inherit the Earth" was a well-written Christian romance novel for young adults. This fast-paced novel had realistic characters facing realistic problems: what college they should choose, what role their significant others will play in this decision and their future, and so on. I especially liked how the author handled Lissa's reaching out to Vanessa and how Vanessa, Lissa's friends, and the other kids at the high school reacted.

At the beginning, I didn't really like Lissa. She was generally good-hearted, but rather oblivious to what was really going on with people and preoccupied with clothing and listening to the latest gossip about her nemesis. However, her focus slowly changed, and I ended up really caring about what happened to her.

This novel was definitely written for Christians. The characters attended a weekly prayer gathering and discussed things like how to tell God's will for their lives. However, it wasn't preachy--there was no all-wise character handing out advice, and no one was entirely sure what the answers were. They did find some answers, but the author didn't make a big point of it.

While, overall, I liked the Christian message woven into the story, I did have one concern. I understand that many people believe this, but Lissa and her friends felt that God was too busy to pay much attention to them and that they shouldn't "bother" God with anything but the most critical, life-changing problems. But the Bible teaches that God hears our prayers, cares deeply about us, knows what we're going through, and wants us to come to Him (and trust Him with) the smallest details of our lives.

There was no bad language. There was no sex. The story was written in past tense except when Lissa spoke directly to the reader, but this style read naturally. Overall, I'd recommend this book to teens as long as they understood the truth about the concern I brought up.

A Life Vest Thrown Into A Stormy Ocean

With society placing the stress it does on females being physically thin, I think the numbers this book quotes for the totals of US women with serious eating disorders is, if anything, on the low side. I along with virtually every woman I know has at one time or another had what amounts to an eating disorder and in a few cases, had them to a serious extent. With body image being as important as it is, particularly with teenage girls, I'm pessimistic that this book or anything else can do more than try to spur the one suffering from this insidious disease to WANT to do something about her affliction. I read this book because I was curious to see if things have gotten any better in the last decade as far as treatment of eating disorders goes, and also in the level of collective recognition among young women that a disorder is there in their own lives. From what I read here, I'd say the answer to both is no. On the positive side, this book did one of the better examples of addressing this life-threatening situation and if it can be gotten to the right hands, it could truthfully save some lives that might be in danger right at this very moment.

Excellent and complete case studies-format; packed with info

I read this book as my daughter was hospitalized for anorexia. The fear and guilt were HUGE as I began reading (they still are) but Zimmer's and Sacker's work as an M.D. specializing in Eating Disorders has provided much-needed insight into sufferers' motivations and pain. My daughter, age 14, marked all the pages that "spoke" to her...she marked MANY pages. Authors Zimmer and Sacker attempt, and for the most part succeed, in explaining all variations of EDs. Esp poignant for me were the comments from a mother, and her powerlessness to stop her daughter from destroying herself through starvation. I bought several copies to distribute to family members so that they can support my daughter in recovery. Very useful is a section for educators on how they can assist a student who has an ED.

About the Author
Earl Derr Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio in 1884. He graduated from Harvard University in 1907, and lived for many years in California. He wrote six novels featuring detective Charlie Chan, who became a staple of the movies. He died in Pasadena, CA in 1933.

What Happened to Eve Durand?

Don't let yourself be fooled into believing this is just a simple dinner party murder. There is infinitely more at stake. The victim? Sir Frederic Bruce, famous Scotland Yard Detective and on the trail of the most elusive woman you will ever meet. Is it possible to find the truth behind these lies, buried in the dust of fifteen year old crime that also must be solved? Count on Charlie Chan to find the answer!
The book's plot is not the one thing that drws you in, but Biggers writing as well, told with a mix of humor, drama and always with a familiarity that makes this an easy, quick and completely enjoyable read and leaves you craving more!

Underrated Mystery and Hero

I just read a copy of this book that I got from the Enoch Pratt branch of the Maryland State Library System. Prior to this I had watched the 1929 version of the story as part of the Charlie Chan DVD series. The film was an extremely bad attempt at portraying Earl Derr Biggers' book and character Charlie Chan. This book could easily be made into a mini-series along the lines of Miss Marple, Poirot, Foyle's War or any of the Mystery episodes long part of PBS. I could see Chow Yun Fat in the Charlie Chan role and the making of this book as a period piece along the lines of the great British Mystery series of the past 30 years. It would be an opportunity to make a more realistic rendering of this character which has suffered from Hollywoodization since the 1920's, Warner Oland's efforts notwithstanding. The story takes place primarily in San Francisco of the 1920's and a good screenplay showing the underrated genius of one of America's great detectives could be a very worthwhile task. This book provides the meat. Time to give Mr. Chan his due.

Old-fashioned Mystery and Romance

"The moment has charm." -- Charlie Chan

Charlie Chan is in romantic San Francisco in Behind That Curtain. Earl Derr Biggers wrote in a style which lent itself to romance as well as mystery. Perhaps only M.M. Kaye blended the two as perfectly as Biggers. Once embarked on this Chan adventure, one feels the trade winds of Hawaii calling our detective back to Honolulu for the birth of his 11th child. Yet the romance of a misty San Francisco still filled with the orient beckon him to stay and solve just one more crime. Behind That Curtain has so much atmosphere it washes over the reader like a sudden rain shower. Fortunately, we are in the most lovely of 1920's cities, with cable cars and quaint bungalows for shelter. Dark passages and murder do exist here, however, and we can consider ourselves lucky that the elegant Chan has stayed over to guide us away from danger.

Bill Rankin is a reporter with the idea of bringing together the visiting sleuth from Honolulu and Scotland Yard's Sir Frederic Bruce. Their stories of crimes solved will make a good feature. But it is Frederic's regrets in connection to an unsolved murder, and the seemingly unrelated disappearance of Eve Durand from India nearly 15 years prior that haunt the conversation. Barry Kirk and the pretty young D.A. he's immediately smitten with, June Morrow, plead for Charlie to stay when Sir Frederic is murdered. There are as many suspects to ponder over as there are mysterious clues. But which is that elusive 'essential clue' so beloved by Scotland Yard?

Charlie wants none of it, and only once onboard the S.S. Maui, of the famous Matson line, does an overheard conversation in an adjoining cabin have the Chinaman rushing down the gangplank to join Barry and June. They must all contend with Captain Flannery, however, whose methods are as heavy-handed as Charlie's are subtle. Charlie discovers evidence of two other missing young women, and suspects a possible connection to the unsolved Hilary Galt murder. How does a world famous adventurer fit into the picture? Are the slippers the essential clue, or something else? In the end, it is of course our favorite detective from the Islands who realizes the clue has been there all along.

The mystery is as much fun as racing down Nob Hill in a 1920's roadster in search of a clue. There is an innocence to the romance between Barry and June borne of another time. Chan is at the top of his game here, both funny and wise. The final scenes hold both humor, and inevitably, as was Biggers' custom, a dash of the romantic. This Charlie Chan is great fun and has one of the most charming endings of any Biggers wrote. A must read for those who like their mysteries old-fashioned, and a bit on the romantic side.

As parts of the Andes have been high enough to support glaciers since the late Miocene, 5 chapters review the nature and consequences of Quaternary glacier fluctuations. The following 4 chapters select major process-form systems that impacted the continent during the Quaternary, including geocryogenic activity, palaeolake development, palaeo-gravel formations and coastal changes. Three chapters provide the first major review of Quaternary vegetation changes in South America (primarily the Andes) deduced from palaeoecological data. The final chapter weaves most of the environmental threads together in an overall synthesis of the Quaternary of South America.

The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs and line diagrams. As it provides a compendium of data and analyses about Quaternary changes for a whole continent, this book should appeal to a wide range of environmental disciplines.

In this case, the truth is more compelling than the trappings of imagination with which it has been invested. The man who has become a legendary figure was, perhaps, of greater stature in simple reality than he will ever be in the oft-repeated, and expanded, tales which commemorate his deeds. Here, before the whole matter gets out of hand, is how it was...
His name was Homer Smith. -The Lilies of the Field
And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you- you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?' For it is the gentiles who strive for all these things. But strive first for the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 'So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today. -Matthew 6:28-34
It's maddening to see so many references to The Lilies of the Field, both book and movie, as "minor." Sure, it's a short book. Yes, the characters and situation are so idealized that it's nearly a fable. No, it does not accurately reflect the state of race relations in America in the early 1960s, nor at any other time anywhere, for that matter. But ask yourself this : how many books have you read in your life that actually made you feel more optimistic about the prospects of the species ? If it's really that easy to create sympathetic characters and write a story that uplifts the spirits, why haven't more authors written them ? Isn't it fair to conclude that the paucity of such stories, and the memorable nature of this one, indicate just how major an occurrence it is when one gets written ?
At any rate, hopefully everyone knows the tale, either from the great film or from a required reading in High School. As the opening lines above indicate, Homer Smith is a nearly mythological figure, a kind of John Henry, Paul Bunyan, or Shane. In an unlikely turn of events, this black Baptist former Army sergeant ends up helping some Catholic nuns, refugees from East Germany, to build a chapel in the New Mexico desert, despite a lack of help, tools, and materials.
Homer Smith brings an invaluable set of qualities to his task, chief among them : self confidence, self reliance, a puritan work ethic, and a healthy amount of pride. Mother Maria Marthe, the Teutonic leader of the tiny band of nuns, brings one great gift, faith :
Faith. It is a word for what is unreasonable. If a man believes in an unreasonable thing, that is faith.
Mother genuinely believes that God will provide, even that Homer has been sent by God, and that He will see to it that the chapel is built. The powerful combination of this mismatched pair's inner strengths serves as an inspiration to the entire community. Hispanic, Anglo, and Black; Catholic and Protestant; wealthy and poor; German, Mexican, and American; they come together to create a unique house of worship. And as the legend of Homer Smith grows in the desert, Mother Maria Marthe says of him :
'That is the chapel of Saint Benedict the Moor. ... That painting of the saint is the work of Sister Albertine. The model was a man named Schmidt who came to us under the direction of God. He built this chapel with his two hands under great difficulties. It is all from him.'
She pauses then and her voice drops. 'He was not of our faith, nor of our skin,' she says, 'but he was a man of greatness, of an utter devotion.'
Just as Homer's devotion to his task and Mother's faith give them a certain greatness, the aspirational beauty of this book gives it too a greatness that defies that parsimonious "minor" classification.

Anyone can be used by God

Im' so glad I finally was able to read this book . It is about Homer Smith, an ex-GI who is drifting from place to place until God decides to use him to build a church for some German-born nuns who have come to America with the dream of working with troubled boys from the inner city. It is a powerful book that tells of Homer's resistance to God's plan and his ultimate surrender and devotion to it. And it is also the story of Sister Marthe Maria and her faith in God's provision. When God touches one heart, and that heart responds, a whole community can change regardless of race or religious denomination. When I finished the book I understood the freedom that comes from knowing that God takes care of us like he takes care of the "Lillies of the Field."

It was great

Book Critique "There is a young legend developing on the west side of the mountains." From the first line of the book I was grabbed into it due to curiosity. `A legend?,'
I thought. `Sounds interesting.' As I read along I began to enjoy the book, The Lilies of
the Field, more and more. I had heard about the book from my step father, he had read it
when he was a young man as myself . I learned that the author, William Edmund Barrett
writes about books pertaining to religion. He has been writing since the sixties and has
written a total of twenty-six books, all of which pertaining to religion. I learned quickly
that the book was about a nice young African-American man that had stopped one day as
he was driving to help some nuns. The book described the relationship and friendship
that developed between the man and the nuns as the story progressed.
The main plot of the story is that of a young African-American man that has just
come out of Vietnam and is driving along a lonely stretch of road in Piedras one day
when he sees a group of nuns working on a fence. He sees if there is anything he can do
to help because he sees no men around. He works with the nuns the whole day and is
invited to have dinner with them. Although he wasn't planning on staying, he is asked to
by the superior nun, Mother Maria Marthe and he sleeps in the bed he has in his station
wagon. He and the nuns start to build a strong relationship and Homer, the African-
American, starts giving English lessons to the German nuns and sings to them at night
while playing his guitar. He also helps provide food for them with the little money he
has. He decides he needs a job so when he is not working for the nuns, he works at
Livingston Construction Co. Also, while he is with the nuns, he is asked to build them a
church. At first he doesn't want to do it and he goes with the nuns one Sunday to see the
church in Piedras. It is made of adobe bricks which he doesn't know how to lay, but he
accepts the task and the help of the Mexican inhabitants of the town, he builds the nuns
their church and eventually goes off on his own way. The nuns believed that he was sent
from God to help them build their church and although they cannot pay him, they thank
him profusely and he accepts the thanks gratefully. After his disappearance, the church
he made became very famous and all of the Spanish-Americans in the region claimed to
have known Homer Smith.
The story was told in a narrative form like a recollection of thoughts or actions.
It takes place in a small, poor town called Piedras during the seventies. I believe that the
central idea or purpose of this book is to demonstrate God's will and how he puts the
right people in the right place at the right time. The nuns needed and prayed for Homer
and he was delivered to them. The protagonist in this book was obviously Homer Smith.
He was twenty-four years of age and stood a towering six feet two inches tall. His skin
was a deep warm black and he had large, strong features with widely spaced eyes. He
was a nice and pleasant fellow and seemed very outgoing. He did have a short temper,
but he never went to extremes. The antagonist of the book was Mother Maria Marthe, a
German woman that spoke broken English and was very commanding. She was a short,
squat woman with a weather beaten face. She also had a harsh sounding voice and was
very straight forward. `Old Mother,' as Homer called her, was sort of bossy, but she
appreciated very much the work that Homer did for her. She seemed to be on his back
about everything, but that was just how she was.
The minor characters of the story included the nuns, Father Gomez and Mr.
Livingston. Sister Elizabeth was a young, sturdy, broad-faced woman with brown eyes.
Sister Gertrude was short, had a long nose and had a harsh voice. Sister Agnes, like
Sister Elizabeth was a sturdy woman and had a broad face. Sister Albertine had a good
voice and looked very nice. All of them shared the following qualities: German and did
not speak good English. Father Gomez was a short, thin little Spanish man that was the
Father of the Catholic church in Piedras, although he was quiet and looked half sad.
Orivile Livingston on the other hand was a short, firm-jawed, gray-haired politician that
owned a construction company called Livingston Construction Company. All of these
characters affected Homer one way or another through the story.

The papers in Part II proceed from the common observation that the dissimilarity in worker skills and employer demands often tempers the outcomes that would be expected in frictionless labor markets. And the last
section of the Handbook deals explicitly with the role of institutional structures (e.g. trade unions) that now form an important part of modern labor economics.

About the Author
My father was killed during World War II, shortly after I was born in 1943. My mother had difficulty raising me and at the same time holding a job, so she put me in an orphanage and later in a series of boarding homes. I grew up unsure of who I was, desperately in need of a father figure. Books and movies were my escape. Eventually I decided to be a writer and sought help from two men who became metaphorical fathers to me: Stirling Silliphant, the head writer for the classic TV series "Route 66" about two young men in a Corvette who travel America in search of themselves, and Philip Klass (whose pen name is William Tenn), a novelist who taught at the Pennsylvania State University where I went to graduate school from 1966 to 1970. The result of their influence is my 1972 novel, First Blood, which introduced Rambo. The search for a father is prominent in that book, as it is in later ones, most notably The Brotherhood of the Rose (1984), a thriller about orphans and spies. During this period, I was a professor of American literature at the University of Iowa. With two professions, I worked seven days a week until exhaustion forced me to make a painful choice and resign from the university in 1986. One year later, my fifteen-year-old son, Matthew, died from bone cancer, and thereafter my fiction tended to depict the search for a son, particularly in Fireflies (1988) and Desperate Measures (1994). To make a new start, my wife and I moved to the mountains and mystical light of Santa Fe, New Mexico, where my work changed yet again, exploring the passionate relationships between men and women, highlighting them against a background of action as in the newest, Burnt Sienna. A former professor of American literature at the University of Iowa, Morrell now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

David Morrell leavens his horror tale with an excellent story. Very evocative.

Reader Let Down

I love David Morrell and have read just about all his books. I couldn't put this one down. He develops the characters, the setting, and the history for a wonderful story. I devoured each page, anxious to get to the next one... When I reached the ending I was greatly disappointed. There were so many questions left unanswered. It was like David Morrell wrote 99% of the book, then put it aside and some stranger picked it up and scribbled a quick end so he could get it to the publisher. I felt cheated out of a proper ending to this otherwise great read. David Morrell should have spent time writing a worthy ending instead of writing the new introduction at the beginning. I was disappointed.

Good to make time fly...

I bought this book for the same reason you tend to buy a book at a train station or an airport: to pass time. I actually found myself unable to put it back down. Although the story line is pretty thin, the meat on the bone comes from the density of all characters, largely an effect of good human descriptions by the author. Also, Morrell is capable of diffusing a sense of fear in the reader's mind by cleverly opposing the beauty of pristine nature to this insanity that human beings are typically capable of displaying. Suspense and mystery have the reader "eat" one page after the other to get quicker to the conclusion of the story.

On the negative side, the writing itself is littered with missing rational elements and sometimes contradictions that act pretty much as gaps and holes in the overall framework. Like this: how come that a sizeable group of human beings reverts back to such a wild, animal-like condition whereas still capable of speaking (the guy found wandering on the road) and living in a semi-orderly social organization? I saw this as a real contradiction. Where did the virus -or whatever rage-bringing factor- come from? Why wasn't Slaughter infected when cut across his cheek? Also, the conclusion of the book comes way too fast. The final "battle" runs through a mere couple of pages.

But overall, this is a real, good, fast-paced horror book.
