Classic Dream Dictionary

I love this classic dream dictionary by Lady Steam Robinson. Written over 30 years ago, it steadfastly remains the premier guide to dream interpretation that is easy to use and easy to understand. I find myself using it more than any other dream interpretation book. It is still the best. Sweet dreams!

Good Storm Brewing

This book was enjoyable. Ms. Muller writes interesting books. This one accurately portrayed some aspects of the Sacramento Delta which interested me quite a bit. This was a good read but not deep, perfect for this time of year. There were good characters and some interesting family dynamics.

The ghost of Appleby Island.

Eye of the Storm is the 7th title in the PI Sharon McCone series. which to date contains more than thirty entries. Sharon is confident in her professional skills, but a bit bummed by the trough into which her personal life seems mired. She hasn’t seen her sister Patsy in quite some time, and when she sends an SOS requesting her help, Sharon travels to Appleby’s Island in the Sacramento Delta. Patsy is working with friends to convert the decrepit mansion, complete with its own ghost, into a posh vacation resort, and a series of puzzling disturbances is threatening the viability of the plans. Sharon runs into the front edge of an massive and ominous storm on her drive, one that will play a big role her investigation.

This is a fairly straightforward, almost simplistic plot. The book’s opening gets seriously bogged down with a much too detailed back-story about Patsy and Sharon’s life long relationship. Once on the island, thing start to pick up. The ghost makes several appearances, but it’s still a while before the first of two murders occurs. The second is fairly predictable. Now the story morphs into a variation on the locked room scenario, as Sharon frantically works to uncover the killer’s identity. The suspense builds, but only mildly.

For me, the show was stolen by the time period in which it is set, at the end of the era just before the advent of the personal computer and cell phone. Sharon’s job, though she doesn’t, of course, know it, is much more complex in terms of information gathering and communication than it would be now, especially when the power goes out.

Marcia Muller has been honored with several prestigious awards. Her competent character, Sharon McCone, was a ground breaker at a time when nearly all fictional PIs were men. There are also several strong females in the story, and interestingly, a very weak man. Though somewhat dated, Eye is a fun look back at the way things were.

Sheldon Has Improved

Ok, this was the Master's very first novel. I might have given him a higher mark if I had not read Bloodlines,Master of the Game,The Sands of Time and the Memory novels first. Though this novel is not as exquisite as his others, it does show how MUCH Sheldon has improved! Since I am such a die-hard Sheldon fan, it breaks my heart to say this but if you are new to Sheldon, I would not recommend The Naked Face as your first pick (or any pick for that matter). Please try some of the later novels that are mentioned--they are thirst quenchers!

Wow, what a story!

I ran into this book in a used book store and it blew me away. I never heard of these murders or the fact that they were probably the most murders in a hospital ever. Perhaps 100 people were poisoned but only a handful were chosen by the authorities to bring to trial. Robert Wilcox does a terrific job setting
the scene and then taking the reader chillingly through murders that will make anyone reading the book think twice before checking into a hospital again no matter what the ailment. In the summer of 1975, someone began poisoning patients in the Ann Arbor Veterans Hospital, Ann Arbor Michgan. It was used as a
teaching hospital by the University of Michigan and was staffed mostly by young student doctors who didn't know that something terrible was happening. But finally, after numerous respiratory arrests per night, they decided to confront their supervisors. The supervisors kept telling them it was something in the air
conditioning and not to worry. Finally, the attackers struck in the ICU with the supervisors making rounds. The hospital was shut down and the FBI brought in. The method of attack was hideous enough. Patients were given shots through their IV. The poison was Pavulon, a muscle relaxer which would shut down all
muscle movement, including breathing, but not consciousness. The victim was paralyzed and couldn't lift a finger or shout out for help. If not found in a minute or two, they'd suffocate. This book tells the fascinating investigation leading to the arrest of two nurses in the hospital. The first hypnotism of a witness in FBI annals is involved. The nurses, both Filipinos, are convicted but then the conviction is overturned. No one can be sure whether they did it or not which means the killer or killers could still be doing it elsewhere.

Since my uncle was one of the men involved in this case and was instrumental in the conviction of these nurses, I found this book to be very factual and a lucid account of the horror our family found itself to be living. Mr. Wilcox is a skilled researcher and a compassionate historian.

For obvious reasons, I choose to use a pen name as these nurses were deported and their whereabouts are unknown at this time.

FAR Too Much Author Speculation

This book arrived in a wake of true-crime thrillers, and was moderate on narrative but weak on facts. Much of the story consisted of author speculations about how it would feel to be injected with curare through your IV drip and how the crimes might have been carried out. If you can find the book for nearly free at some second-hand place or a garage sale, go ahead and read it. Otherwise, don't bother.

This is the best book I have ever read! When I first got it all my friends said it would take a year to read or it was probably boring. But it isn't it's the best book there is and once you start reading it you have to keep on reading. The thing that gets really annoying is that they say that it is boring after reading the first page but it really is the best book you will read.

This is the best book that I have ever read.

I have only read Gone With the Wind and I am currently reading Scarlett. I love Gone With the Wind and so far Scarlett is almost just as good. I was forced to read this book by many friends and after I started the book i could not put it down. I recommend this book to everybody of all ages and both sexes.

I ordered this for my pastor. I read it many years ago; I'll be 50 next year and Dawson McAllister conducted a Teen Retreat/Camp thing that I attended as a teenager on this subject. It was very, VERY sobering but also very enlightening. I have never forgotten the book or the lessons from that week.

STILL "new thinking" even after 20 years!

Written in 1991 I just read this again for the first time in about 6 years and it is STILL awesome. Done in real world terms with real world examples, the author challenges EVERY "rule" still being taught in business school programs and being used in many c-level board meetings.

If you read one business book, make it this one!

If you read one business book this year, you won't go wrong with HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT WORKING SO
HARD by Robert J. Kriegel . . . it is packed with ideas that will help you stop working so hard--and start working better.
Kriegel, author of the equally excellent IF IT AIN'T BROKE . . . BREAK IT, contends that it is not a badge of honor to work 100 hours per week . . . rather, he points out that it's the innovators, visionaries and new-thinkers who love their work who rise to the top.
I particularly liked his 90 Percent Rule, which says that a relaxed atmosphere produces better results than a tense one . . . he then described his experiments with over 150 salespeople . . . those who made less calls had at least 20 percent better results, largely because they felt more relaxed and were able to listen better.
There were many memorable passages; among them:
* In my programs, I always ask, "How many of you get your best
ideas--barn burners, lightbulbs, the aha's--while at work?" No one ever raises their hand. "Which room in your house do you get your best ideas in?" I ask, The response is always the bathroom or bedroom. "Why is that?" "Because no on bothers me and I get time to think" is the usual response.
* Ray Evernham, with driver Jeff Gordon, used this flip-of-the-rules strategy in NASCAR racing to win the Winston Cup Championship several times. Evernham says, "If conventional wisdom say the corner is the best place to pass, we practice passing on the other end of the track, because nobody is expecting to get passed there."
* Whether it is a book or a proposal, many people have difficulty starting a writing project. That first step seems like an insurmountable hurdle. The first line seems impossible to get right.
One way to get yourself going is to begin at the end or the middle. I have started out writing my last three books with those chapters that I am most excited and clear about. I will often begin writing a chapter, not necessarily at what I think should be the beginning, but with a great story or example that I enjoy relating and that clearly illustrates the point I want to make. Once started, momentum builds and the rest
becomes much easier, whether you have to go forward of backward
of both.

Robert Kriegel and Louis Patler provide an interesting look at Conventional Wisdom and how it applies to business as usual. The focus of this book is to give a business manager "permission" to challenge the status quo in order to make paradigm changes. This book can provide insights into professions outside of the business community. Educators can benefit from the numerous examples of challenges to Sacred Cows that inhibit change that could enhance the educational opportunities for all students.
This book empowers the reader to be creative in seeking solutions to everyday problems. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a jump-start in looking outside the box make his/her workplace a more productive environment.

Appreciate the contents and arrangement of the book and the honest sharings of those that submitted their personal experience with alcoholism. So many get down to their "stinking thinking" and what held them in bondage as well as how they "got out".

This book changed my life

When I read The Courage to Change the first time (1987, the original edition) it changed my life because it explained alcoholism in a concrete way that was easy to understand. The stories from alcoholic (and some nonalcoholic) celebrities go a long way toward illustrating the damage this disease causes while showing that you don't have to be the proverbial falling-down drunk or daily drinker to be an alcoholic. The stories also, by the way, are entertaining and show the humanity of some of the household names who tell them. Wholey mixes up the rhythm of this book enough that you don't get bored. Something here for everyone--I've personally bought literally more than 12 copies to give away. I recommend it highly. Thanks, Dennis Wholey!

1 Star: (I hate it!!!): I would NOT recommend.
2 Stars: (I don’t like it): But, the product has some slight redeeming quality.
3 Stars: (It’s O.K.): Others may like it more than I do.
4 Stars: (I like it): Good product, but it may have some minor issues.
5 Stars: (I love it!!!): Perfect item and I will recommend it.

I have had this book for years. But, I am working on my reviews and thought I would put one our for this book. I have probably read this book, at least, three times. I have used references from this book many times more than this during graduate school. Phillips does a great job breaking down Lincoln's MWA (Managing while Walking Around) theory. Lincoln felt that the best way to "manage" people was in the midst of them. You cannot know what your staff is doing unless you can see what they are doing, speak with them at their level and be where they are. I use this in my own management. I would recommend this book and have done so many, many times. The book is also short enough to be an easy-read, while educational in it's theories.

Great book for people who aren't big readers

My husband bought this book for our son who just went in the Army and for himself. My husband does not generally like to read but loved this book! It's not too terribly long and is an easy read. He learned some stuff. Wishes the people who are running for president right now would read it! LOL.
