Carrie Vaughn Does it Again

Kitty Norville is back in her sixth and most exciting adventure yet, a continuation of her Las Vegas tribulations in Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand. Her temporary defeat of the vampire priestess was just that, a non-permanent solution, and trailing her back to Denver is a fire-creature bent on destroying Kitty and her Pack. She is far from without her share of allies, however - the crew of a paranormal television series backs her up, as well as new-husband Ben and old vampire allies.

This is my favorite Kitty book to date, and I adored how the vampire political intrigue plotlines of the previous books continued through to Raises Hell. The "villain" is one of the best yet, inscrutable and nebulous in motives, as is as Kitty's maybe-ally, Roman, who offers his assistance to the Pack Alpha and Denver's master vampire, Rick.

Better than amazing writing from one of the best writers in the paranormal and urban fantasy genres, this book will blow you away. Perfect marks - don't miss it!

Kitty's Vegas Wedding, when what happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas!

Kitty and Vaughn are still going strong, in this reader's opinion. I will agree with other reviewers on reading this one after Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand to catch some of the background nuances and for a proper intro to a couple of interesting new characters Kitty met in Vegas. I do think this chapter of Kitty's life as a werewolf is stronger than ever, the mystery is challenging to solve, the dangers thrilling, and the appearance of new characters mixed with favorites adds variety to the story without taking away from anyone. One thing about the latest Kitty, which I am very grateful for is this: Vaughn continues to focus on the mysteries and problems Kitty encounters in her world, romance is present but not overwhelming. In fact, Kitty's relationship with Ben comes across as very realistic; they have the same issues any other newly wed couple might have and the author seems to be resisting the recent lemming-like charge of other paranormal writers towards more and more romanticized relationships in their urban fantasy series. I, for one, am extremely grateful and I can only say, MORE Kitty and the Show that Isn't afraid of the Dark please!!! And a sincere thank you to Vaughn for staying true to the characters, the gritty reality of Kitty's world I have come to know and love! I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Jim Butcher's Dresden Files & Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series.

Finally, a 5-star listen

It took six tries, but I knew that Carrie Vaughn had it in her. Finally, a 5-star listen! KITTY RAISES HELL was the culmination of nearly half a series worth of world-building, character development, and story progression. It took Norville longer than most Urban Fantasy heroines to prove her value, but I’m glad that I stuck it out, and look forward to seeing where the author and Marguerite Gavin go from here.

As I’ve mentioned in some of my previous reviews, there have been very few constants in these books other than a couple of indispensable secondaries, and that trend continued in this installment. Queue a group of TV paranormal investigators, and T.J.’s little brother, Peter. However, in this particular instance these unknowns worked to Vaughn’s advantage, and I’m beginning to suspect that there may be a method to her madness.

The plot was an extension of KITTY AND THE DEAD MAN’S HAND to a certain extent, so I think that it goes without saying that these novels should be read in sequence. The Band of Tiamat did surprise me with their latest form of attack when their supposed “demon” turned out to be a completely unforeseen woo-woo type. Rick’s stance on Kitty’s predicament and his offer of help also caused me to gain some newfound respect for his character.

Given the large number of walk-ons in this series, I am increasingly impressed with Marguerite Gavin’s ability to differentiate each and everyone one of them by minutely adjusting her voice, timbre and inflection. Her real coup de grâce however is with the MC; Kitty’s radio stints seem to be on the decline, but they remain one of the best elements, as does the spectrum of emotions that Gavin injects into the protagonist’s sticky situations.

KITTY RAISES HELL was the audio that tipped the scales in Carrie Vaughn’s favour.

Truman gives ‘em hell in a masterful book

It should come as no surprise that Harry Truman, the man who has been described as blunt, plain-spoken and straightforward during his years in politics, should write a book that shares those same attributes.

Where the Buck Stops provides an intriguing look at the United States and its leaders through the perspective of the 33rd president. In his incomparable manner, Truman delves into a variety of historical topics, offering his viewpoints on the presidency, government, and historical events. Most compelling, however, is Truman’s examination of who he considered the best and worst presidents in United States history. No topic or public figure is too controversial for Truman to tackle; he required that the book be published after he and his wife passed away.

The man who called himself an average American has left behind an extraordinary book.

The Buck Stops Here...For Sure!

I remember Harry Truman very well; a no-nonsense person who shot straight from the hip. HST wasn't afraid to make decisions; in fact he aimed his greatest criticism against do-nothing presidents who sat on their backsides & let the world go by. But I guess I especially liked his plain-spoken delivery...delivered in real 'American"...no one would have a problem getting his message. I do remember his election & his victory over Dewey...& that marvelous front-page picture. One of my relatives, a proper New Yorker, went down to the New Haven Railroad Station to listen to that 'hick Missou farmer' on his whistle-stop tour...& said that at it's conclusion she was yelling "Give them hell, Harry!", with the rest of the crowd. A good Americana read...especially in these troubled times.

Edifying. Written with simple straight forward language revealing a man of high values, integrity and compassion. Truman was an astute politician and understood the importance of a leaders ability to unite and persuade the people around him to achieve programs and legislature that benefit the country and the welfare of its citizens. If you want to be able to assess candidates for the office of president with clearer understanding and better judgement this book will be of great assistance. Mr Truman gives and excellent snapshot of the best and worst of this countries executive leaders from Washington to Mr Truman's term.

Cayce rocks, but this book is dated

Having completed my thesis on the function of sleep and dreaming, I have read extensively on the subject. While I tend to lean more toward physiological neuroscience perspectives on the functions of our dreams, I am very open-minded and believe that our dreams surely serve a psychological purpose as well. I picked up this book expecting something more than I got. I was presented with a poorly written and gender biased first chapter(for example, when talking of one of Cayce's clients "She turned to the woman's world of family and relationships..." Granted it was written several decades ago, but still...) Honestly, I'm avoiding finishing the book. I am sure Cayce himself was a very talented dream interpreter and helped many people but Harmon Bro does not do him justice here.

The book that changed my life.

There really is such thing and Amazon subscribers probably already know this. I had studied Fraud and Jung's dream interpretation and still found something missing in my own experience. This book was the link to the unconscious and the world of spirit. The author takes the real life experiences of a couple's dream experiences through 20 years +. Cayce's interpretation sees the levels of dreams with the clarity to understand their physical, intellectual and spiritual content. Read this book.

This book was a disappointment.

I have enjoyed other Edgar Cayce books, however, this one left much to be desired. The information on dream interpretation was sketchy, when the author discussed Cayce's OWN dreams and the fact that they were "submitted for interpretation", he didn't indicate who interpreted them! In addition, most of the example cases used in the book just seemed to be heavily stuck on the Stock Market. I didn't buy this book for assistance in the Stock Market, and honestly, the information given in the book wasn't helpful anyway!

It is a delight to read. Enjoy.

This is a book I have read many times. It is about Edgar Cayce and it tells you the story how he developed his ability to tell about previous events (and even future)in a self-hypnotic state. He didn't understand how this could come about but he thought that in one way or the other everything that had happened or even was only thought or said was remembered in the ether and could be stored in some Akaish records and be accessed by everybody who had developed that ability. This book tells about how he started to talk about the dead sea scrolls 15 years before they were found, and he could impossibly have known about them, because he had never been there. He told where they could be found, what was written in them, who wrote it and also a lot about the big role that was played by some women, unknown to previous history. This is a wonderful book. Read and contemplate. Take a deep breath and enjoy, it will be a delight for you. It is so sad that the book no longer is available, it is one of my favorite books. It just have to be reprinted.

Nice variety of topics, about how to live your life, life lessons, being a good person, silliness and comedic poems too!

A friend gave me this book as a gift when I was going through a tough time. I've always been a fan of poetry, so I was happy to receive it.

It was a nice read. I think it was age appropriate for anyone from middle school to college. I liked that they have a variety of themes such as nature, love, even funny ones. I definitely have some favorites, ok, maybe 20 favorites. Out of the funny ones my favorite is "one hose shay" about a wagon that survives for 100 years and then magically falls apart with a snap of the finger lol. There were other ones I liked too, about how to live your life, lessons from father to son, about the seasons chaining, about being a good person, silliness and just many different subjects.

Most of the poems were from authors within the last 150 years and were fairly short to read. One page or less. Actually, I reread the whole book once or twice just to get a little deeper into the poems. Saved some of them for my personal future reference, and shared some of them with people who I thought may benefit.

If you ask me about why I gave it only 3 starts and not 5, I can't really point out the reason to you. Maybe because I thought some of the poems were just so-so? Or they didn't quite have the emotional or intellectual impact I wanted? Although someone else reading this book might enjoy it a whole lot more, so hard to say. I think it's just personal preference.

Did I LOVE this book? NO. Did I LIKE this book? YES. Would I recommend it? YES.

This companion to Dr. Gott's No Flour, No Sugar Diet has more than 200 recipes. A recap of Gott's program explains why readers should eliminate flour and sugar from their diets, identifying the high-calorie, nutrient-deficient foods that are made from them as major factors in the escalating weights of adults and children in the U.S. To avoid obesity, heart disease, diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses, Gott shows readers how to replace empty calories with tempting alternatives for meals, snacks and desserts. Gott acknowledges that stress and limited time lead many to choose unhealthy fast foods, but the difficulty of finding no-flour, no-sugar prepared foods in many locations means followers must cook at home. Fortunately, these recipes (some contributed by readers of his book and nationally syndicated newspaper column) are quickly prepared. For example, a simple syrup made of dates and figs turns hot cereal into a special treat; crepes made with arrowroot powder are a delicious alternative to wraps; and meat, cheese and nuts, often reduced or eliminated on diets, are permitted. (A casserole based on an English meat pie contains ground pork; an adaptation of the Philly Cheese Steak calls for provolone; and Gott's sweet-and-sour nuts blends pecans, cashews and almonds.) I wasn't sure if I needed both books about the no sugar no flour diet. This book gives you recipes as well as info on the actual diet. You can skip the first book and just get this one and be just as informed.

No Flour and No Sugar

The no flour diet is good for people who are gluten
intolerant. The no sugar diet is good for pre-diabetics.
A beauty of the work is that the author provides a
plethora of meal choices together with the applicable
recipes. Doing without sugar and wheat may help with
controlling internal inflammation so that the metabolism
can operate optimally to burn fat. The author is short on
the medical specifics of this regimen, although I know
the wisdom of this book from personal/practical experience.

Food pointers are contained throughout. For instance, olive
oil may be sprayed onto food. Saccharine, splenda, stavia and
neotame are classic sugar substitutes. Green or white tea
is an optimal drink, as opposed to canned soda (diet or
otherwise ). No-fat yogurt is an optimal carb with a
very low glycemic index.

Snacks may be made from natural fruits and nut bars containing
chopped dates, figs, walnuts, cinnamon and other healthful
choices. Salads may be peppered with seeds, spinach, cran, raisin,
bacon, bits, kidney beans, grapefruit segments and cucumber.

The diet regimen is sound advice based upon my experience; however,
extensive medical references seem to be absent. Nonetheless,
the book will assist in eliminating foods that retard the
metabolic processes. For this reason alone, the book is worth
purchasing.

This cookbook provides good recipes for healthy eating. As my husband and I are trying to cut down on white flour and sugar in our diets, I've used this cookbook several times to try new recipes. One recipe--for a spicy cornbread using corn meal and oatmeal is quite good, and I'll make it again.

An Important Work By An Early Leader In Kinesiology

From George Goodheart's pioneering work in the 1970's has evolved Applied, Clinical and Behavioral Kinesiology. The author of this book was a leader in the field of Behavioral Kinesiology (which was also the original title, published in 1979).
This book is important because Dr. Diamond's work has subsequently evolved into other areas of research and has frequently been referenced in later significant works like "Power vs Force" by David Hawkins.
I would recommend this book as required reading to anyone interested in the field of kinesiology, its origins and applications. There have been recent books written that appear to be more comprehensive in the applications of kinesiology, but these are frequently over-reaching and innacurate in their attempts to be everything to everybody.
Perhaps the most valuable aspect of this book is the clear direction given on how to properly perform the technique of muscle testing.
