A decent collection of catwoman & penguin

This volume was designed to be released in conjunction with the 1992 "Batman Returns" film, and like that film makes the common mistake of focusing on the villains rather than on Batman. Every single story in the book features either Catwoman or The Penguin, and the first few seem to be included ONLY because of the inclusion of these characters. The early stories are fun to read in seeing how times have changed (Batman threatens Catwoman by saying "Quiet or Papa Spank!", Batman protects himself by wearing asbestos head-to-toe) but there is nothing particularly shining about the stories beyond being the first few appearances of these two. The seventies stories, when the Batman titles in general were making leaps toward modernity, are certainly not a fair portrayal of the comic at that time as the chosen stories are clearly meant to be homages of the golden age (one story from 1974 even calls itself "old-fashioned Batman action" -- so it knows its not cutting edge). Its not until the last couple of stories (from the 1980s) that we really begin to find stories that actually deserve to be in collection of "greatest" anything. (The best Catwoman story, after all, was already in the first volume).
Unlike the first collection, this one has the feel of a marketing ploy and a group of editors who tried their best to pick good stuff but whose hands were tied by having only being able to use two villains. The constant mentioning in both the forward and afterward of Batman's "inimitable Rogue's Gallery" makes it sound like what the editors really wanted to do was expand on a wider range of criminals, but were blocked because someone high up thought an anthology that tied in with the movies was a good idea.
In short, they are decent stories but mostly not spectacular. I bought this through the marketplace for a total of 6.32 after shipping, and I'd say that's its not bad for that price. But it doesn't live up to the full title -- They aren't the "greatest", its not really about "Batman." A more honest title would be "16 Passable Penguin & Catwoman Stories." But I guess being honest doesn't sell books.

Represent Stories from Different Eras

Interesting stories as Batman revolves from 1930's to 20th century. I particularly like the Batman of the 50's and 60's as more fun and child-like actions in bright colors. Today's Batman is depicted as a grim complex character which is expected as it adapts to the readers of this age. Great stories and this should be followed by Book # 2.

Very colorful and vibrant

Pages are not too glossy, but features a lot of the light-blue, Neal Adams, Batman costume. Stories aren't "Great" but the artwork is vibrant and great to look at. Lots of great images. Probably not as collectible as the Neal Adams volumes, but still nice.
